I have heard him mentioned as a potential top 5-10 pick but not the first pick. Why not?

Is it the height? I know he is probably closer to 5'10 but he isn't much shorter than Russell Wilson or Drew Brees. Both of them slipped due to height concerns and it proved to be foolish.

Is it a concern that he runs too much or can't play in a "pro style offense"? Does he have to? It seems like the NFL is adapting to the spread and spread option the way high school has since it took over college football. It was only natural that it would carry over into the NFL. So why not here?

And lastly, is his personality too much? Is that even possible? In this market, he would be a rock star. Alot of people that the national media ignores Jacksonville and when they do talk about us it is negative. Get some stars on this team and they will pay attention. Johnny Manziel is star #1 in this draft.

Imagine the roar of the crowd at Everbank the first time this guy goes on the field.

My biggest issue with him is also my favorite thing about him. His playing style. We haven't ever really see anyone play the way he has, so we can't project how it'll fare. If it carries over, then he'll do very well. If it doesn't he'll be out of the league soon.

From a physical perspective he is short and slim.

From a mental standpoint he has character concerns (substance abuse, ego, motivation) and he seems careless during games.

I still like him if we get him in round 2 or 3, but he is a huge risk for a rebuilding team picking top 10.

I get the feeling that with the right coaching, Manziel will be a star (he is the most dominant qb I have seen since Killa Cam at Auburn, I thought Cam was much better though)

but with the wrong coaching/system he will be out of the league in 2-3 years as a huge bust

I'm not sure he can play from the pocket, too often he passes up open guys to scramble around. And if he does develop it'll probably take a few years. That plus his lack of height and character concerns. I'd rather just take TB and call it a day.

Obviously his height is an issue.  Should we take every short Quarterback because -- hey he might be the next Drew Brees or Russell Wilson?

The NFL isn't really adapting to a spread option.  The NFL is another level compared to College.  NFL Defenses are far more complex than College Defenses.  High School to College is less of a drop off than College to NFL.

His maturity is a concern.  Imagine the roar at Everbank the first time Tim Tebow goes on the field.  We can get him without a draft pick too!

Manziel is boom or bust.  Taking him with the first pick would be suicide for an NFL GM.

Manziel #1 OVERALL!

CUZ #jagsdontdraftscared!!!

I will be watching this kid against LSU tomorrow. He's in my top five already. Those of you that think this guy will drop into the 2nd or 3rd round are absolutely crazy. By draft time, most mock drafts will have him in the top 10. I believe this guy will be a star with the right coacHing. Teams that pass over him will rue the day that they did.

I think he'll go early, but I think the team that picks him will rue the day they did.
He's a frail little kid that can't read the field and can't play in the pocket.

And your argument for him is terrible. It's the same argument the Tebow fan boys were using when he came out. The long term solution to selling tickets is winning, not some college "rock star" prospect. We all saw how it worked out for Tebow, Vince Young, and how it's working out for RGIII.
OP, it is a combination of all of the above that makes him far too risky to pick over a Teddy or Mariota. Any of those worries all by themself and it might be different...but undersized, reckless, AND significant off the field issues add up.

Actually, I can live with the first and last, but I just can't see him changing his playstyle and with his playstyle he is going to be an IR machine against bigger, stronger, faster NFL defenders. He's already come scary close to major knee and shoulder injuries this year as it is. I just think he's going to be an even more injury prone Vick because of his size and inability to avoid big hits.

Then, if he changes that reckless playstyle will be still be the player that he is right now...probably not.

I haven't even gotten to the decision making, forcing throws, leaving perfect pockets habitually, etc because he has grown enough from last year to this year to think he might be able to get to a point where that is a distant second worry to the injury ones.

Haha yep same with me. I want him to be good so bad, definitley my favorite prospect this year. But I just dont think he will end up working out. I really hope im wrong as long as he doesnt go to the Texans/Titans.

I highly doubt he goes in the 1st round because of height/injury/off field concerns. GMs really take those things into account. If we take Clowney in the 1st I wouldnt be upset taking him in the 2nd though.

Of course there's a Drew Brees namedrop within the first two lines. Of course.

He's really short. Shorter than Brees or Wilson. And he doesn't have their accuracy.

I think he's a great college QB but I don't know if he can hold up against NFL defenses.

There is no boom in can't miss.

whats with the vendetta against the kid, those are idiotic comments. its like he had sex with your gf or something

johnny has better completion percentage than both in college.  the problem with johnny is not his accuracy but that he trusts his receivers and arm strength too much sometimes which leads to bad decisions and interceptions.
Small. Awful mechanics including abysmal footwork and no ball security when running. Awful decision maker. Most of his big plays are a result of superior O-Line play.

if we were picking in the later in the top 10, then I would strongly consider him, but he's not a top 5 prospect IMO.

Stop trolling dumb [BLEEP] [BLEEP].

Uh, Manziel also plays in an Air Raid while those two were in pro-style offenses under center. Brees played over a decade ago and Wilson completed 73% of his passes at Wisconsin.
