It's quite obvious that he wasn't regarded as a top 10 LT.
I think his true value was that of a "decent LT" capable of helping a team in need. Nobody saw Monroe as a franchise LT or a building block for the future.
If they did, A) we would have gotten more for him, and B) we would have kept him or at least tried to keep him.
I think most people here will be surprised once he hits Free Agency. He will find a job, sure, but he won't get some astronomical number as a "top 10 LT that is young" would get.
I think we may be overrating our guys quite a bit. Monroe was a pretty good LT, and had some stretches where he was VERY good for a while, but was inconsistent.
This year he regressed, and he seems to be doing just "OK" for Baltimore.
The value of a player is determined by a number of things, including the contract that he has. A guy that's basically a 12-game rental will not be "worth" as much as the same player with 2 years left on his contract.

There was no restructuring done. The Jags just took the bulk of the cap hit to make the trade possible. The Ravens were up against the cap.
Caldwell knew what he was doing when he traded Monroe. His plan was to put Joeckel at his premium LT posotion and see if Pasztor could be our answer at the RT position by evaluating him throughout the remainder of the season. The stats proves that the OL has played much better since the trade...

LTs better than Monroe:
Whitworth, Duane Brown, Joe Thomas, Ryan Clady, Trent Williams, Joe Staley, Okung, Matt Kalil, Bushrod are all easily better than Monroe. Then theres about another 10 players that are similar to Eugene Monroe.
Not saying he's a bad player, far from it. He's a very solid LT and a good starter to have. Plus he's relatively young. But this whole "easily top 10 LT" is actually far from true. Monroe when playing his best football, approaches the top 10 and squeeks in. Then there's a few other players who, like Monroe, have a chance to be top 10 when playing well.
Overall, Monroe has been inconsistent. It's not like the guy has been a pro bowler or even an alternate in his 4 years in the NFL.
After this year when Monroe would have walked we get nothing. This way we get two draft choices...2 for 0 sounds like a good trade.

Oh, so we're going to tag a LT and pay him a ton of money even though he's never even been an alternate to the pro bowl, but the Browns won't Franchise their young Pro-Bowl Center?

Is OT really a premium position though? Or is it an outdated ideal like "Defense wins championships". We have two starting Gene Smith UDFA tackles that are arguably doing better than the top 10 draft pick tackles that they replaced.

Yes. Problem with an O-Line is you can't trust it. You can't expect to have a healthy O-Line in the NFL. You need 5 healthy starters to have a good line, and one healthy pass rusher to blow it up. Good QBs have to perform with bad lines.

He's top-10 for the purpose of helping your argument for more draft picks, but you didn't believe that before the trade.
The 4th and 5th is a decent trade.
Shhhhhh.. Don't tell anybody our former "elite" LT isn't playing so well.
