Despite our continued ineptitude on 4th in short inside the red zone, despite stupid penalties, despite dropped passes, despite bad sacks we did it!!! We broke the streak!!! Here are my thoughts...
1. Thank you Matt Wright!!! Both All three of your FGs were things of beauty and very necessary. That first one looked like a bad miss to the right, but it curved back in and snuck inside the right upright for the FG, and the last one was perfect! Great job Matt Wright!!!!!
2. Hats off to the defense on that 4th and 1 stop. The defense had been frustrating me all game long, seemingly unable to stop them at all throughout the game. The pass rush would seem to get good pressure on Tua only to never get there. The series immediately after the blown 4th and 1 inside the 10 was an unmitigated disaster. But when it counted the most, Josh Allen and company stepped up and stopped him short of the first down! I didn't think I would find myself typing this anytime soon, but great job coming through in the clutch defense!
3. If there were a 3rd hero of the game, it is the Dolphins' DB that touched the receiver down on that 4th down slant. But for him lacking the awareness and touching him down, the Jaguars can't call time out, and the game goes into overtime. Actually, Bevell and Schottenheimer should get credit for that play call. They've been getting hammered all year for poor play calling, and deservedly so. But considering we had timeouts remaining, that quick slant to get us into FG range...throwing it close to the defender, was brilliant!
4. Three straight games, we've had catastrophic failures in 4th and 1 inside the opponents' 10 yard line. Whether it's the poor play calling or the timing on the play is always bad, we absolutely have to get better at that. In two of those instances, we could have taken the points. Although I supported going for it in the bulk of those instances, we will have to start attempting the FG if we can't execute any better. Had we kicked a FG, the game would not have gotten down to the last second FG. This is especially important when we actually forced a turnover to get into that position. We have to find a way to come away with points.
5. I have never seen a RB get more long runs called back by penalty than James Robinson. The camera was horribly out of focus, so I could not see the alleged face mask penalty on Farrell. But damn, Robinson is snakebitten when it comes to long runs. On that run that got the Jaguars down to the 1, I was expecting a flag on that lay, and my heart sank when they said it was a fumble. Fortunately he recovered the ball. That said, even though he had a rough going of it early on, I thought it was another fine performance by JRob.
6. The drops were getting on my nerves. While Arnold had another good game for us, that first series drop that would have given us first and goal inside the 10 was a killer. Not every throw is going to be perfect. Our guys need to come up with more of these catches.
7. Rookie Watch:
A. Trevor Lawrence-had a pretty good game, though his stats were not gaudy. He threw a TD and no INTs. In most games this year, there were stretches where it seemed like he couldn't buy a completion and the offense would completely bog down. Today, however, there was a stretch in the early 3rd quarter where it seemed he was getting hot. There were a couple of plays I thought he might have been better served staying in the pocket as opposed to trying to scramble outside of a blitz, but there were a few other plays where his athleticism paid off handsomely getting outside of free rushers. He did have the fumble that killed a drive, but it would have been helpful if Taylor bothered to throw a block for him.
B. Travis Etienne-DNP. On iR and out for the year
C. Tyson Campbell-DNP
D. Walker Little-DNP
E. Andre Cisco-I did not notice him in the game at all.
F. Jay Tufele-saw him in uniform, but did not notice him making any plays.
G. Jordan Smith-Did not notice him. Was he active?
H. Luke Farrell-IIR he had a catch, and he also had that face mask penalty that wiped out the long JRob run.
8. I think Jawaan Taylor had a bad game. He was decent throughout the first half, but gave up sacks/pressures in the second half. The schedule isn't going to get any easier after the bye. He will have to bounce back from this performance.
9. Great toughess coming back from injuries demonstrated by both Marvin Jones and LaViska Shenault, both of whom were limping in the game. If they weren't able to return, I don't know what the hell the offense would have done without them.
10. While I'm at it, Jamaal Agnew produced another big play. If we were a better team in a bigger or more respected market, he'd be a star by now.
11. Bottom line: It was ugly at times, but this was a great way to end the streak and go into the bye. I'm proud of the guys for their continued fight. All three phases of the game showed up and contributed to the win, and man does it feel good!
