Quote:Thats his job! What position will he line up?

RDE/LEO will be his primary role, but they will move him around to create favorable match-ups and possibly confuse ill-prepared defenses.

Thanks.
Von Miller is being moved all around today vs the Pats. He's winning from every position. I think this is what we should want and hope from Fowler.
They want Fowler to be a Jaime Collins at least that should be what they hope for. I don't trust he'll be good.

You mean we won't be in the same look 90% of the time? What is this madness?

this lol, who thought the guy was gonna be in the same spot every play lol

Fowler is different from Miller. He is bigger and doesn't bend the edge as well. Once again, look at guys like Sheard, Bennett, Mack, Houston, etc. That is who you should picture when thinking about Fowler ideally.

I didn't know he played offense too.

You don't have to bend the edge if your rushing over guards and centers on various occasions.

I wasn't really comparing their playing styles but simply pointing out that even studs can he moved around to get them in the best situations to succeed.
Reiterating Wash's comments on Fowler being moved around with a slightly different emphasis, Dave Caldwell from the senior bowl practice field:

Quote:

Caldwell on Tuesday expanded on an idea new defensive coordinator Todd Wash mentioned this past Friday – that Leo defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. could move around on the defensive line next season rather than always lining up on the end of the line of scrimmage.

“He can be an every-down, defensive-end Leo for us,” Caldwell said. “If he turns out to be a very good player for us they [opponents] can negate him [if he always lines up on the end]. We want to give him the best chance to succeed. That may mean moving him around. He has a pretty versatile skill set.’’

Shocking!
Nah, he has no explosion though

He sux

Quote:I'm unsure how to think of this statement. It could have two very divergent meanings. First it could mean that Fowler is very versatile and moving him around can be used to force the offense to focus their blocking attention to areas the defensive coaching staff wants the offense to be focused. The other quite possible meaning is that Fowler is what a lot of posters here feared, not a transcendental talent as a pass rusher and the Jaguars just drafted another Andre Branch and they'll need to try to scheme up a pass rush from him in order to justify his lofty draft position.

The first possibility is excellent, but I kind of can't see it being the case, and could actually work quite against him, trying to make him learn more than just putting his hand on the ground and working on his moves to get around the tackle. The second possibility is the more likely, Wash just doesn't believe in his abilities as a impact player and already is thinking ahead to how he's going to try to make chicken salad out of what he's been handed on the roster.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but just had to. <a class="bbc_url" href='http://www.news4jax.com/sports/nfl/jaguars/dante-fowler-getting-to-work-in-the-lab'>LOL</a>.

“We started studying how to put him in some different positions to be successful and really stress the offensive line and the offensive quarterback or whoever you want to say,” said Wash. “We have to make sure that we put him in position to be successful, not just standing up out there or putting his hand down. At the same time, we have to stay within our package and put him in a position. He’s an explosive player. I think it hurt when we lost him a year ago. You saw some of the issues that we had because Dante wasn’t here. He’s busting his hind end, working out, body is already starting to change. You can see the determination he has to come back from this injury. I can’t wait to put my hands on him."

I like the idea of moving him around to create favorable matchups and confusing blocking schemes.

Let's just hope he is player enough to maximize that effect and command the extra attention.

That twitter Vid has me excited to see what he adds in terms of strength and power to his game.  I'm a UF fan and my only concern was pass rush moves with Dante.  If he can get around the edge better and not get stood up by OTs i think he'll be better than expected nxt year, though some want a 15 sack type season.

I think the ideal scenario would be if Dave could bring in another pure edge rusher and have that guy be the time LEO. Then Fowler would be relegated to Branch's role over the past few years. On obvious passing plays, put Fowler at the other DE spot across from the LEO and have him move inside or stunt while in the lightning package.

I can picture on third downs having Odrik, Marks, and our FA LEO with their hand in the dirt and Fowler in a 2 point stance over the A gap.

Definitely excited to see how they use Dante.

I just hope he managed to somehow learn that spin move from Clemons.

Plus he got whooped so bad he tore his ACL.

Bust.

Definitely.  The way he loves the game though, I'm going to assume he's been in everyones head trying to learn something.

I'm secretly hoping for Jack, A FA edge rusher, and the S from WV this offseason.  Still, It's too early to pick a clear #1 player to want in the draft since FA hasn't started though.
