Quote:Or, you know, Caldwell still thinks Gus is the guy he hired. And understands (as a talent evaluator) what he gave him to work with on defense.

But, nah, I'm sure he's secretly tanking another season for a draft pick, seldomright. That def makes the most sense.

Yes, you must be right, it can't be that Gus actually is so bad that he went 5-11 against one of the easiest schedules the team ever played with a QB that threw for 35 TDs. Gus is actually a great coach, and Dave has known that right from the start, that's why Gus took over such a bad team without hesitation even though he was in demand. Am I doing it right?
Quote:Sorry for expecting a defensive guru to be better....
It's not like we have had any sort of pass rush or shut down DBs with previous HCs...Not even JDR (defensive coach) could manage to get a decent pass rush or a strong secondary after his first couple of years...JDR stepped into a well built but aging defense built by Tom Coughlin and it steadily declined...

My point is, we have had this same problem you "expected" Gus to fix for a long time prior to his arrival when 2 other HCs had the same problem. That in itself, tells me it's more of a talent problem than a coaching problem. 3 HCs (4 if you count Mel tucker as interim)experience the same exact problem(s) with the defense means the talent has not been acquired to fix the defense.

Better.
Quote:Man, you guys are so depressing. This message board is becoming the home for the chronically depressed. And angry. Reading this stuff just drains off a person's good feeling and optimism.

I'm optimistic. I really think we're going to be a lot better next year.

You noticed that too? It's hard to come here and talk with other jags fans because 90% of them would rather the team be bad than be proven wrong.

Yah this board is pretty terrible these days. Before twitter it was miles better. Now it's just a matter banging your head against the wall. My hope is that it will get better once the team becomes a consistent contender. I doubt it tho. This board is outmoded. New jag fans are talking about the jags on Instagram and Twitter. This is a vestige of the early days of the internet. Bunch of old farts is mostly what it amounts to. Shame too, this is still the closest thing you can get to actual discussion on the jags outside of doing it irl.

Why does he always say "ey"?

I can only imagine ey

It's not an excuse if it's true. Maybe Wash will be a very good coach. Maybe not. I feel like good coaches get the most out of their talent. They do the most with the least. Having stars on defense that play well doesn't make you a good coach.

Pathetic Andre "run directly into the tackle and flail my arms because I don't have any pass rush moves" Branch had 4 sacks this season. I'd call that getting the most out of your "talent".

I never understood the fascination with Branch. Even when he was drafted and I'd watch the film on him, he wasn't at all what I considered a sack master. I wish Gene Smith would have stayed put the year he got Gabbert and just picked up Ryan Kerrigan (or else make the trade, but pick JJ Watt). Then the following year instead of reaching for Branch, Gene could have picked up any number of players. Guys picked just after Branch include Janoris Jenkins, Cordy Glenn, Alshon Jeffrey and Bobby Wagner.

He had 6 in 2013, and 3 in 9 games in 2014 which projects to nearly 6 for a full year. This year he had 4 with a lot more playing time each game. Pass rushers usually improve their sack numbers with experience, but Branch got worse.
Not exactly what I'd call player development in his case.

I've dropped most of the Jag "fans" I've followed.

Jags twitter is kinda awful.  Lots of young skulls full of mush ranting about hot dog vs sandwich type topics, uninformed political takes, and Cecil obsession.

Not all are bad by any means, just the ones I lost patience for filling my timeline with more nonsense than useful stuff.
Quote:Here's my prediction:

We get Marks, Fowler, and Sample back from the injured list.  We make a major upgrade to free safety and pass rush.  We draft more speed at linebacker.

And by this time next year, the threads will all be about how stressed we are about losing Todd Wash to another team.  And some people will say we need to fire Gus and make Todd Wash the head coach so we don't lose him.

I guarantee it.

Dude....

Alfie's twitter is awful.

And what's worse is that the CBS sports app includes him in Jaguars tweets.

As of now I've yet to figure out a way to block him, without creating a twitter account to block him...

^  Wash has some interesting things to say.

-Talks about being on the field, not upstairs. Wants to motivate the defense when necessary.

(insert moronic ice cream joke here)

 - Scotty Hazleton and Mike Rutenberg will be feeding him info/feedback  from the box on run-defense and pass-defense respectively.

- started breaking down Jags D cut-ups today as a staff - discussing how to improve. Wants everyone on the same page w/ better communication. Staff and players.

-  Describes in some detail what his role as "run defense coordinator" last year entailed.

-  "7 of the top 10 teams overall are also the best in the league at affecting the QB on third down.......   we need that."

- "sacks are important - but we need to be able to disrupt the quarterback."

- "We don't know if Dante is a twelve sack guy. We think he can be a very disruptive player. We're gonna put him in position to affect the QB."

- "Whatever the players skill set is,  we need to put them in a position to do that. If they can't do something well, then as coaches we can't put them in those positions."

- "...more detailed. More discipline."
