Quote:So he got promoted to puppet.. That's all he's gonna be if Gus is gonna have his hand in on the defense next season..

What makes you think Gus didn't already have his hand on the defense?

I'm hoping and assuming that he didn't.

If he wasn't coaching and game planning on the defense, what was he doing?

Hell I don't know. Mentally pricing razors to shave his back?
Listening to Wash, it's clear he is going to be moving this defense in a more aggressive direction.

He agreed that extensions are irrelevant if they don't do what is necessary to improve this team in 2016, they'll all be gone.

He's saying they're going to play more disciplined, assignment sound football where players and coaches are held accountable.  "I don't float in the gray" when someone does something wrong.

According to Wash, discipline isn't just about penalties.  He obviously doesn't want to see more penalties, but he also doesn't want to see the bad angles, playing out of position, and not understanding of assignments that they saw last year.

It's about the precision, attention to detail, and execution.  The system he'll run is very precise, and players will be expected to understand their assignments, and they will be held accountable for understanding this.  Sounds like things were a little soft with regard to guys taking bad angles, finishing tackles, etc..  Wash is saying that's going to change.

According to Wash, they're going to be evaluating very heavily what happened all season long on third down, and why they struggled to affect the QB.  "We've gotta fix the issues with third down."

There are things they want to do with Fowler next year to put him into different positions to be successful.  They want him "stressing" the offensive line/QB.

My only concern with this is whether having Dante learning multiple positions (and responsibilities) might be counter-intuitive. We saw this coaching staff try to put too much on Denard his rookie season and he sunk and they ended up having to cut out a lot of the OW stuff and focus him on RB role.

I would say that is a legit concern.

I think that if they simplify his responsibilities as they increase the positions (i.e. make his role that of a pass rusher first and foremost, whether from LEO or OTTO), he should be okay.
Like all that i hear from wash, lets see if it translates. Hopefully we get him some good personnel to work with

That seems to be the case as Wash said he may line up at the OTTO spot, but don't call him an OTTO.
If players are taking bad angles and missing assignments etc. then why hire a coach from that defense? Did he not play a role in that?
Quote:No one is "counting on" anything.  I was making a point about talent on the field vs. coaching.

If the talent isn't there, it isn't there. Whatever the cause  may be - be it injury, bad drafting or free agent vacationers treading water.

And missing you're two best prospects for pressuring a quarterback for a combined 28 games is NOT par for the course. That's Tiger Woods hitting epic duck hooks off the tee all day and missing the cut.

The Ravens were missing Suggs all year. That alone is a loss of the sacks of Marks and Fowler's rookie expectation combined. The Ravens finished 24th in defense, not 31st.

And I'm not convinced that the problem was entirely Clemons and Branch. Neither was that bad in the past. You said before that their job was to isolate and beat the OT one on one. If they are not very good at that then why keep doing it over and over and over and ... ? Try something different. If something different doesn't work immediately, keep trying. Don't go back to what has been a proven failure.

I hope Wash becomes the next great defensive coordinator. I hope the Jags and Bradley turn it around and make the playoffs next year. My expectation is that defense will collapse again, it will be blamed on injuries again, and the Jags will have a whole new staff in 2017.

Wash was responsible for a defensive line that was shredded by injuries, and he was the defensive run game coordinator.

The injuries, and the lack of production from guys like Clemons who were barely better than a warm body in a uniform, made a pass rush downright impossible to develop with any consistency.  I think most here understand this.  But, how many teams shredded this defense in the run game?  The run defense was actually one of the strong suits for this team this year.  Wash was responsible for that.  Players taking bad angles and missing assignments really focuses more on the secondary.  How was that his role?

But, didn't he really do this at UF?  I think I would probably be more concerned if he was an incoming rookie and they were asking this of him.  The fact that he's been in the meeting rooms and on the field or practices and games learning helps give him somewhat of an advantage when he finally gets back on the field this year.  He'll still have a learning curve, but I don't think it'll be nearly as steep as it would have been last year, and if he can stay healthy, the hope is that he'll have an immediate impact on the pass rush.  Wash was practically gushing about the effort he's put into his rehab process, and how he's gotten bigger and stronger.  The knee should be a non-issue once he gets back on the field, and hopefully all that work will pay off.

a lot of players missed assignments, including players in Washs command.

Regardless of how good a coach Wash is or will be, the defense will be better after the draft and FA. So we may never really know how good a coach Wash is since his players will be better than what Babich had.

Well, at least you've still got your built in excuse to whine about the coaching then.  Thank goodness.

He did, and it also one of the things pointed out as reasons why his weight fluctuated (no set position) or why he doesn't have a lot of pass rush moves (he was moved around)
On replacing Wash, how about the DL coach from Missouri? They seem to have an over productive pass rusher every year.
