What makes you think Gus didn't already have his hand on the defense?

Quote:I'm hoping and assuming that he didn't.
Quote:If he wasn't coaching and game planning on the defense, what was he doing?
Quote:There are things they want to do with Fowler next year to put him into different positions to be successful. They want him "stressing" the offensive line/QB.
Quote:My only concern with this is whether having Dante learning multiple positions (and responsibilities) might be counter-intuitive. We saw this coaching staff try to put too much on Denard his rookie season and he sunk and they ended up having to cut out a lot of the OW stuff and focus him on RB role.I would say that is a legit concern.
Quote:I would say that is a legit concern.
I think that if they simplify his responsibilities as they increase the positions (i.e. make his role that of a pass rusher first and foremost, whether from LEO or OTTO), he should be okay.
Quote:No one is "counting on" anything. I was making a point about talent on the field vs. coaching.
If the talent isn't there, it isn't there. Whatever the cause may be - be it injury, bad drafting or free agent vacationers treading water.
And missing you're two best prospects for pressuring a quarterback for a combined 28 games is NOT par for the course. That's Tiger Woods hitting epic duck hooks off the tee all day and missing the cut.
Quote:If players are taking bad angles and missing assignments etc. then why hire a coach from that defense? Did he not play a role in that?

I think I would probably be more concerned if he was an incoming rookie and they were asking this of him. The fact that he's been in the meeting rooms and on the field or practices and games learning helps give him somewhat of an advantage when he finally gets back on the field this year. He'll still have a learning curve, but I don't think it'll be nearly as steep as it would have been last year, and if he can stay healthy, the hope is that he'll have an immediate impact on the pass rush. Wash was practically gushing about the effort he's put into his rehab process, and how he's gotten bigger and stronger. The knee should be a non-issue once he gets back on the field, and hopefully all that work will pay off.
Quote:Wash was responsible for a defensive line that was shredded by injuries, and he was the defensive run game coordinator.a lot of players missed assignments, including players in Washs command.
The injuries, and the lack of production from guys like Clemons who were barely better than a warm body in a uniform, made a pass rush downright impossible to develop with any consistency. I think most here understand this. But, how many teams shredded this defense in the run game? The run defense was actually one of the strong suits for this team this year. Wash was responsible for that. Players taking bad angles and missing assignments really focuses more on the secondary. How was that his role?

Regardless of how good a coach Wash is or will be, the defense will be better after the draft and FA. So we may never really know how good a coach Wash is since his players will be better than what Babich had.
