Quote:And all those guys are on the bench or inactive besides Telvin Smith.
5 of those 7 have started in the past.  It's circumstantial.  Those players are young and have potential.

Let me ask you this?  We got Telvin in the 5th, along with others.  Say you had a 1/3 (Caldwell has had 3 drafts) chance of getting another Telvin caliber player this year, would you trade that probability for an old guy who will be gone soon?
Quote:So you wouldnt trade Chris Smith for Eric Weddle?
I wouldn't trade Weddle for a pick.

Your chances of getting a Telvin type player in the 5th round is far greater then 1/3.

Math is math.

You said they would take anyone on that list for Weddle.

Chris Smith is pretty much par for the course of what level of player you get in the 5th round.

I just listed 7 players, 6 of whom clearly show more promise than Chris Smith, all were drafted 5th round or later, and you come back with this?  Comical.

You just tried to convince people that you have 1/3 chance of drafting a Telvin Smith level player in the 5th round...

What would you rather have? A couple year stop gap, or the potential to draft the next over-looked young player in the later rounds of the draft? None of these people mentioned as trade possibilities would put the Jags on the map, so what's the point of spending resources to do it?

It's the reality of what Caldwell has done.  Not sure what else to tell you other than what the facts are.

This is exactly right, i have no clue why it's not clear to others.  To each their own.  Glad Caldwell shares our mentality.

So you really really must value 5th round picks with this comment.  Haha.
Quote:Trade for Barkevious Mingo. He's young and fast. 4.5 in the forty.  He will live up to his potentinal as the 6th overall pick under Gus.  I guarantee it.

Why spend a 3rd round pick on Mingo when the guy only has 7 sacks the going on three season when Branch has 10 sacks over the same timeframe? That makes no sense. Mingo's garbage.

Because he guaranteed it?

I like draft picks as much as the next guy, but what has a better chance of success:

Question mark drafted late in the draft

or

Proven NFL veteran

I'd give my left arm to win the division for once

Exactly, people are up in arms because the Jags might "potentially" part with a late round draft pick, get a grip people.

Guess who else is on the bench...

Quote:So you wouldnt trade Chris Smith for Eric Weddle?
I'd have the paperwork faxed in to the league office before the Chargers had time to realize how stupid that trade is for them.

Beyond that, I'm not even sure that the guy fits in Bradley's defense. He's too small to play LEO, arguably too small to even be an Otto, and we have a pretty good weakside linebacker already.

I don't know that I'd call Willie Young "proven". Weddle I'd be on board with in certain circumstances.

It was meant in general to the  "OMG you can't trade a pick" crowd.

And I would argue that most people would be quite satisfied if you drafted Willie Young in the 5th round.

Ah, got it.

And I would to, but that would have been a 24-year-old Willie Young with great potential. This is a 30-year-old Willie Young on the downslope of his career.
oh no we could trade a late round pick that usually amounts to nothing for an impact player
