The simple fact of the matter is the Caldwell plan is a 5+ year plan that should ultimately result in building this team like the Packers do ... through the draft. 

 

With the salary cap increasing the way it is, Free Agency isn't what it used to be.

 

The Gene era consisted of a team of role players and no playmakers.   Caldwell is about getting playmakers.

 

Daryl Smith was coming off of a serious injury so his recovery is somewhat unique.  Additionally, I really don't think Daryl Smith's (post-injury) production here would have been that great without Ngata, Suggs, and Dumerville?  Once again, D. Smith is a great role player and that's exactly what he did best with the Ravens.

Not sure if I expressed it on this board or not but I've never really been a big fan of Derek Cox (and the fact that we traded our 2nd round pick to move up and pick a FBS player that was voted to the "2nd team All Colonial Athletic Conference") .

He tanked 2 years for long term gain. Which is smart.

You act like they're were FAs available that would of turned this roster into a winning team over the last two years.


If Caldwell doesn't ATLEAST break even this year, he will be on the hot seat, if not shown the door. Tanking doesn't exist in football, especially long term tanking. People get fired way too fast to take such a risk.


He blew up the roster, and waited for his opportunity to grab the players he wanted, without becoming desperate.

Why is everyone who critiques the team either stupid, clueless, prejudiced? The team deserves it. From the record, botched FA signings to drafting guys like Matt Jones and a 3 rd round kicker. but mainly the win/ loss column.

It's to be expected.

Some are patient enough for a 5 year rebuild plan, some are not. .

Our third year in rebuild. Quite possibly third in the standings.

So it's..next year...again.

Yeah that team looks like they are just a QB away...

One of the worst rosters I have ever seen

As I recall, Jamie Dukes has never had anything even remotely positive to say out the Jaguars...why is this really such a shock to people? More importantly, why does anyone really care?

We know that.... Dukes clearly doesn't. The general public definitely doesn't.

I mean we had like 20 sacks in 2012.  Obviously we were set at pass rusher.

Maurice Jones-Drew was certainly not on his last legs.  He didn't retire until 2 years later.

Meester wasn't on his last legs either.  I'm glad he's still in the league.

Derek Cox was a great CB, which is why the Patriots picked him up after losing Revis, and he's not a Free Agent currently.

Because who knows how long his suspension will be!  We've already got one player suspended without knowing when he's going to come back.  So instead of going through the draft to get a pass rusher, we should have signed a guy who could miss half the season.  And we'd have to overpay him (Duke's words, not mine!), and he's only on a one year contract with Dallas as it is.

Denard Robinson is a player that's stepped into the role decently.  Do we need another RB?  Sure.  Not a fan of Gerhart's by any means.  But Caldwell likes to take gambles.  Some of his signings will be boom/bust.  Guys like Ziggy Hood and Gerhart might not work out, while guys like Sen'Derrick Marks will.

Think about it Daryl Smith, Eugene Monroe, Pot Roast,Derek Cox even Mojo all players that could have been kept and we still haven't replaced those positions.


I like the Julius Thomas signing but we kept Marcedes Lewis and cutting him would have free'd up like 5 mill that makes no sense.Lewis is trash now! Like they say Parnell was a backup, but now he suppose to come here and play great. Hmmmm Some of yall thought Gerhart would do the same last year too. We had Red Bryant who was decent, not sure why they bought Odrick in plus they resign Alualu days prior that makes no sense.Seeing how Alualu havent really been good since he been here."bust" And especially when Marks played good and we still have Roy Miller. Since we Let Smith go we been searching every since for another good LB,I think Telvin Smith is the best LB on the team personally. Not sure how Skuta gonna look because he too was a backup! And so was House and Pierce so on..

Only proven player Jaguars bought in was Julius Thomas to be honest!


And the one backup that they needed to let go!! Is yo boy Henne ! Smh!

 

 

 

As to the part in bold:

 

1.  Daryl Smith...replaced by Telvin Smith, who has already been named AFC Defensive player of the week once.

 

2.  Pot Roast...replaced by SenDerrick Marks, who was named Pro Bowl alternate last year.

 

3.  Derek Cox...not that replacing him was like replacing Lester Hayes or Darrelle Revis...but take your choice between Colvin and McCray.

 

4.  MJD...was good to great when he was here, but was clearly finished when he was let go.  IIRC, had <100 yards total last year, then retired.  This year is a very deep RB class.

 

The one guy you can definitively state we haven't adequately replaced from the group above was Monroe, and Monroe wasn't that good his first couple of years here.

All of this is true. Hopefully with the way Caldwell is using FA it is making the process go faster but this is what I see him aiming for. Ted Thompson just sits back and drafts who ever falls to him. He has built the team in a way that he can draft for immediate impact (Mathews, Clinton-Dix) of reap the benefits a few years later (Cobb, Rogers). He patches holes in cheap free agency (Donald,) and only spends on truly elite talent when it becomes available (Woodson, Peppers). He even finds the the later picks and un-drafted guys (Shields, Lacy, Burnett).

 

This is the process to get to it. Caldwell approach is a little augmented to other who have reached this point but this is the process. Hopefully Caldwell is the one who can get this team there. 

This guy is crazy, he has no idea. All we needed was a QB to compete? NO WAY! Gene Smith ruined the roster and Caldwell came in and cleaned it all up. Results don't show in rebuilding in 1 or 2 years. Takes 3 plus years and I very much except this team to be .500 or more this season. We will end up behind the Colts 2nd. IF Bortles and Joekel and the rest do get better like they have planned so far this offseason, I wouldn't be surprised if they make a playoff push. All we really need is a quality pass rusher, FS, and RB. If we can address the DE which we will, the RB which is up in the air with the latest Pierce waiver signing, and FS which there really isn't one in the draft but maybe we will find a gem like Caldwell has with Telvin. This guy doesn't keep up with the Jaguars to know anything about them. 

I stick by my team, but it's funny how anytime the media talks negatively about The Jags, "they're clueless". Until we start winning, they're gonna remain rightly entitled to those negative takes

They have every right to have a negative take but at least present an informed argument. Do you think the 2012 team was only a QB away from competing? Jamie Dukes does.

Well.. sorta. I mean think about it. Had Gabbert come in and been the guy they envisioned when they drafted him, i've no doubt we would have been a playoff team. Maybe even if Garrard stayed healthy and didn't throw in pain. I agree with him to some degree

Maybe you should go back and take a look at that roster. As I mentioned earlier in this thread the majority of those guys are either out of the league or currently unemployed.

I did. I went back and looked and I was mistaken. Looks like I was thinking 2010 when we were close at 8-8 and had 3 probowlers. Yeah, 2012 things were already in shambles and we were far from a qb away. Touche'
