The simple fact of the matter is the Caldwell plan is a 5+ year plan that should ultimately result in building this team like the Packers do ... through the draft.
With the salary cap increasing the way it is, Free Agency isn't what it used to be.
The Gene era consisted of a team of role players and no playmakers. Caldwell is about getting playmakers.
Daryl Smith was coming off of a serious injury so his recovery is somewhat unique. Additionally, I really don't think Daryl Smith's (post-injury) production here would have been that great without Ngata, Suggs, and Dumerville? Once again, D. Smith is a great role player and that's exactly what he did best with the Ravens.
