I remember after last years draft Dukes being on the NFLN saying how the Jags are building a team "the right way".  It's clear Dukes is just a talking head who reads a teleprompter.

Noooo Jamie Dukes how could you...

Thanks, Etdavis, for your response. I agree that the Texans and Bills had a lot of talent, more than the 2012 Jaguars roster. Neither team had a QB, however, no one mentioned 12 wins for the Jaguars. What was mentioned was that the 2012 Jaguars were a QB away from being 'competitive' and that a solid Tackle was let go.

I do think that Dukes was unnecessarily harsh in his criticism. He could have addressed the question much better, but overall here are his points:

1. The Jaguars top 3 areas of need are O-line, RB, and Edge rusher. He mentioned that the Jaguars let Eugene Monroe go and then talked about adding Parnell, who was a back-up in Dallas. In his opinion, this move hasn't addressed the team's biggest issue. With the Jaguars having so much cap space, I think most expected more moves to address the O-line. Is this unfair criticism? I mean it's not like there was some premium RT available this year. Bulaga was the cream of the crop but it became apparent to everyone that he didn't want to leave Green Bay as soon as free agency got underway. So who else was there to sign?

2. Last year, the RB situation was addressed with Gerhart and Robinson. He mentioned that at no time did Gerhert show that he was a 1000-yard rusher, however, he was brought in to address this issue. Robinson was a college QB. Again, is this unfair criticism? Could the Jaguars have made better decisions here? Is RB still an issue or have these issues been properly addressed with those moves? Dave tried to address this area with the pursuit of Demarco Murray. Dave set a limit on how much he was going to spend on a 27 year old player who's coming off 450+ touches last year. Does anyone fault him for not overpaying? Without a doubt the RB position will be revisited during the draft.

3. Edge Rusher: Dukes mentioned that this will be addressed through the draft. He went on to say that with the cap space available, the Jaguars could have looked into a difference maker at the CB position or even adding Greg Hardy to help address this issue. Again, who should we have pursuited at CB that was available? Revis? He had every intention of resigning with NYJ again. Maxwell maybe? But is he worth nearly that whale of a contract signed? Dave did pursue McCourty and was close to snagging him until the Patriots uncharacteristically stepped up their offer. Does he get credit for that? It's not like he didn't address the position at all. He did sign House, who many believe is an up and coming player who should fit well in this scheme.

I appreciate the discussion. This may be my last post regarding Jamie Dukes' comments. I am not particularly fond of Dukes and don't feel that it's necessary to defend his remarks. I hope that it's okay that I may not have any follow-up after this response.

With that said, thank you, Knarnn, for your comments. Let me see if I can address them.

1. I mean it's not like there was some premium RT available this year. Bulaga was the cream of the crop but it became apparent to everyone that he didn't want to leave Green Bay as soon as free agency got underway. So who else was there to sign?  I think that since Caldwell was looking for a RT in FA this year, Dukes' comments of letting Monroe leave has some merit. It was a potential opportunity to have bookend tackles but now the Jaguars are left looking for a RT. The O-line remains an issue, which was his main point.

2. Dave tried to address this area with the pursuit of Demarco Murray. Dave set a limit on how much he was going to spIend on a 27 year old player who's coming off 450+ touches last year. Does anyone fault him for not overpaying? Without a doubt the RB position will be revisited during the draft.  If Dave is still looking to address the RB position, then it's fair to say that the addition of Gerhart and possibly Robinson was not the answer. Dukes' comments regarding the run game is fair, in my opinion. It's evident that the run game is still an area that needs substantial improvement.

3. The #3 area for improvement was Edge rusher. Dukes mentioned that it would be addressed through the draft, which I think we can all agree with. Then he mentioned that since the Jaguars had so much cap space they could have addressed other areas of need for improvement, such as CB. He mentioned Revis and others, but the point was that the Jaguars have plenty of cap space and did not effectively use their cap to address needs with impact players. Rather, a majority of the signings were players who were back-ups on their respective teams and are now expected to produce on a team already devoid of some talent.

"They did sign.... Some guys"

Right off the bat, this video just screams bias. We signed Julius freaking Thomas, one of the best young free agents to hit the market this year (easily top 3). This a young probowl TE, this is not some guy.

I honestly couldn't finish the video.
I honestly had no idea Dukes was even still on NFLN. I thought they would have lanced that tumor long ago, not like anyone cares for his worthless opinion, as evidenced by the complete lack of interest by everyone in that God awful show "put up your dukes". He never has anything credible to say about any topic, and I swear they're only keeping him around as either the village idiot or just to play devil's advocate to the well thought out, metered opinions.
Quote:Wow. Maybe football isn't your thing.

You complain about letting Knighton go yet ignore Roy Miller did just fine filling in that spot.

Cox sucked. Gratz, McCray, Colvin, Ball, and Blackmon were all better.

You would've taken MJD last year over Gerhart?? All 96 yards?

Just stop.
Umm u twisting my words I didnt complain about letting pot roast go just said it wasnt as necessary.

You compared 5 corners to Cox i guess it would take that much to prove your point.

And i said Mojo a few years ago over Gerhart.

Maybe proving good points aint your thing . Lol and stop getting mad its my opinion !! Yall act like everybody suppose to agree with everything the gm does like you. Sorry bro..
Quote:Sounds like Jamie Dukes likes what Gene Smith was building in Jacksonville
Mr. Dukes is a idiot.

If he thinks he can cause a problem he is all for it. He will take the other side of every argument. You could walk up to him and say "Its a beautiful day"

and he would say no it is not.

Only reason he is even on this year is because of Sapp.

Now you're twisting my words... I didn't say it takes 5 corners to replace Cox, I'm saying in that short span we have already had 5 better.

Then you talk about MJD from a few years ago... Uh we signed Gerhart last season so I am definitely not following you.

I wouldn't get mad at your opinion if it was actually decent and made sense. Carry on boi!!!1
guys guys... lets face it. we all need to score some and feel a little better about ourselves. we are fanhood family and need not squabble. HEY! Just think how much we'll be huggin, high-fiving and "i luv u bro!... i luv u2 man!" -ING once this thing gets turned around Wink
Colleen Wolfe is kinda hot. That's all.
I'll see ur Colleen Wolfe and raise u a Molly Qerim. Thats my wifey right there. MOLLY!
Jamie Dukes is the Skip Bayless of NFLN. And a long time hater of Jacksonville. Why waste time on what he thinks?

Precisely. Besides, Jamie is on the outside looking in. I have wondered about a few players that Caldwell has let go since taking over, but there's no doubt the overall roster is vastly improved. It's time for the standings to reflect as much.

I like the push for youth

I'm not going to defend everyone of Caldwells moves, but that is some awwful analysis and shows how little he follows whats going on in the league (considering its his job)

He makes a point about Gerhardt and maybe Jeremy Parnell.. but he fails to realize that they compete with 32 other teams for free agents and it's not like there are elite players everywhere to nab up. After 3 years with Caldwell we see what he does. He likes to sign FA's that have potential upside or project into starters. He doesn't sign 30 year old names that will burn out. He tried hard to get some big guys this season and I think that's commendable, he stuck to his breaking point on Murray and Suh (the Suh Contract is so insane) and they ended up with some interesting projection players. I really like House and Parnell, I don't think these signings stop the Jags from drafting Corners or Tackles at all and if they dont work out, what was the real risk there?

The QB away comment was far away from reality... That team was in such bad shape, It was hard to see Smith and Mathis go, but there was no need to re-sign them. There were holes everywhere. I would have liked to have seen Monroe stay, but he's nothing special really.

It goes back to Gene Smith and a little bit of Shack Harris... Smith was a bad GM, he gave up on a draft class and picked a punter in the 3rd round. He might have been a decent scout but his draft decisions were what put this team into the hole it got in, not near a player away.

Win or get out. I've been way more patient with Caldwell than Gus because I truly believe he sucks as a head coach. But now it's time for Caldwell's pieces to start producing. Joeckel, Gratz, Cyprien all look like either bust or backups in the league. Throw in some major misses in free agency like Gerhart, Beadles, and Hood and this team is still as weak as its weakest link. And the cherry on top for Caldwell's decisions is Gus Bradley. The man who is poor in time management, in game decisions, and questionable assistant coaching hires. With all that crap still on the team it's time to produce because excuse time is over.

Beadles is not a "major miss" at all.
Neither was Hood but carry on
