Quote:Gary Kubiak elected to remain with the Ravens instead of interviewing with other teams. The Bears were reportedly very interested in speaking to Kubiak.

Most teams were not interested in him anyway.

But two teams apparently were interested:  the Bears and Jets:

It looks like Rex Ryan is going to Buffalo. I don't understand it because he needs a proven quarterback, not E.J. Manuel and a new guy. Atlanta would have been a better fit IMO.

Quote:NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday morning that the Buffalo Bills are expected to make Ryan their new coach, per sources involved in the situation. The Bills have offered, and Ryan is planning to accept.

Rex Ryan apparently felt that the Falcons were on the verge of rejecting him again.   That first happened in 2008 when the Falcons decided to hire Mike Smith:

The Falcons have some explaining to do. Why would they not want a guy who can upgrade their bad defense?

Looks like his next career after coaching will be a TV job.

Rex Ryan is a great Defensive Coach.   However,  there are more than one ways of upgrading a bad Defense.

The Falcons appear to have serious interest in Todd Bowles.   They also interviewed Teryl Austin.

The method of hiring a coach that has mainly been on the Offensive Side of the ball,   with the plan of hiring a high caliber Defensive Coordinator,   is also something the Falcons have seriously considered.

Key word: most. Do you think anyone was seriously interested in Del Rio before the Jags came calling in 2003?

You presume Atlanta wanted Ryan. Given how much more attractive that job is, it's safe to say that Ryan was told he wasn't the guy.

Y'know, Rex Ryan is not the only defensive-minded head coach on the market. Maybe they don't like his track record with offenses, maybe they didn't think his personality would fit, maybe they didn't want a retread, maybe they've decided completely against hiring another defensive-minded head coach. Or maybe Atlanta did want Ryan, but the Bills were willing to write a bigger check. There are so many variables in play that there'll be no way to say exactly where negotiations broke down until someone leaks the reason.

All that said, it's a very long stretch of logic, perhaps to the point where your logic breaks, to say that the Falcons passing on Ryan means they don't want to fix their defense.
I know other defensive coaches are available. I just wonder what it is about Rex Ryan that made them not want to do a second interview because the others don't have "head coach" on their resumes.

Maybe the way he pooped in his hat in New York over the last few years?

Two possible concerns:

1.  Rex Ryan's track record on the Offensive Side of the ball as a Head Coach is far from stellar.

2.  He might not fit in well with the organizational structure of the Falcons.
Finally the tracker article on NFL.com is updated to list all interviews and hirings. It was out of date for a while.

John Fox speculation heating up:

Quote:John Fox speculation heating up:

Apparently one rumor is John Elway wants to promote offensive coordinator Adam Gase to head coach. Of course John Fox does not want to talk about that speculation.

Quote:Perhaps Broncos VP John Elway sees Gase as a better long-term coach for Denver, and sees retaining him as a way to convince Manning to play one more year.

If the Bears are seriously considering hiring Adam Gase as their next HC,   John Elway will have to speed up the process.   The next 72 hours are critical in terms of a number of the NFL HC situations that currently have uncertainty and for the teams that might lose a Coordinator to a team that hires a HC.

One top of everything else,  Jason Garrett's situation needs to be clarified soon.

He's not going anywhere any time soon if it's left up to Denver to make that decision.  He is all but likely to lose  both his coordinators this year, so there's the challenge of rebuilding a staff.  All indications are that Peyton will be back next year, so the offense shouldn't change dramatically, but if Jughead decides to retire?  I wouldn't want to be in Fox's shoes.
Apparently Marinelli could be heading to Tampa.

Jason Garrett isn’t the only coaching free agent in Dallas.  Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli has completed his contract, too.  And he soon could be leaving.

So the Cowboys are not giving Garrett a contract extension when they finally won a playoff game?

An additional factor is the Broncos have a number of UFA's that should have demand on the open market.    The two Thomas' ,   Pot Roast,   Brandon Marshall,  and Orlando Franklin come to mind.    Regardless of whether John Fox and/  or Peyton Manning are back in 2015,   it looks like the Broncos window for winning a Super Bowl in the near future looks like it's near shut.

If the Falcons or 49ers for instance were interested in Fox as HC,  I think he would want to leave Denver.   The Falcons job might especially be appealing to Fox as it would give him another opportunity in the NFC South.    Not to mention,  Matt Ryan is in his prime,   with a game changer at WR.

FBT, serious question: do you think Fox would resign, retire or otherwise be forced out if both coordinators and Manning left? Or has he earned the right to lead the inevitable rebuild?

Jason Garrett is going to be a very wealthy man, because he'll get a huge offer from some other team and make Jerry Jones match it.

Lovie Smith wanted to hire Rod Marinelli in 2014 but Jerry Jones prevented this from happening.   Being that Smith and Marinelli have worked together for a long time and are close friends,   I think there's a good chance he ends up with the Bucs now that Marinelli's contract is expiring.
