Caldwell seems to pick players to fill premium needs instead of better players who are still needs on this team

I have mocked out these players the past two years and its showing more than ever now

Joeckel < Ansah

Gratz/Cyprien < Mathieu

Bortles < Mack

Lee < Jordan Matthews

The later rounds are solid like telvin smith who was one of my favorite players last year

The first rounds are questionable but can still turn it around

Jury still out.  I want to see him have an offseason to build some leg strength without screws in his ankle.

My general take without heavy analysis -  He's looked great on a small handful of snaps, good on several, solid on most, and bad on several IMO.

Would like to see him switch to great on several/good on most/bad on very few.  I don't expect much improvement this year as I suspect he needs strength training and that won't happen till the offseason.

I hope that's all it is.

DE was more of a need than LT when Joeckel was drafted, so had little to do with need.

Mathieu was a huge gamble, not worth the risk IMO.

Way too early on the Mack/Bortles comparisons, same with Lee/Matthews
Quote:Fisher was never an option for the Jaguars though, although Caldwell did say he'd have picked Joekel over Fisher is given that opportunity.
of course he did,do you think he would of Saif the opposite after taking Joeckel?

Or maybe because it's what he really thought?

And by the way, Ansah isn't playing like a top 5 player either. You could probably say they're about equal.

According to who? LOL.

Ansah was a project with great measurables. Despite how "raw" he is, he posted 8 sacks last year and is already at 5.5 this year while making numerous big plays for that Detroit defense. Yeah, I'd say he's lived up to a top 5 draft billing.

it's possible, I liked Joeckel better. If he did like Fisher better he would never come out and say it though after taking Joeckel

I disagree with you regarding the play of Ziggy Ansah.   He's been a major reason why the Lions rank at or near the top in most Defensive categories.

Granted,  Ansah gets more favorable matchups than most DE's because of attention that Ndamukong Suh gets and to somewhat less of an extent what Nick Fairley received before the knee injury vs.  the Falcons in London sidelined him.    But he's winning a high # of 1 on 1 matchups.

Ziggy Ansah was NFC Defensive Player of Week for his dominant performance at Minnesota last month.       Ansah has improved noticeably as a pass rusher this season,  has forced several fumbles,  and is a high level run Defender.   All of this despite Ansah missing the entire off-season and first two pre-season games because he was recovering from off-season surgery.    Taking nothing away from Luke Joeckel's potential as an expected key to the Jaguars rebuilding efforts,   I'm thrilled with what Ansah is providing the Lions.

It helps to have a ton of talent playing beside you...

That's true.  Yet,  Ziggy Ansah is helping make others more effective on the Lions Defense as well.   Including a Secondary that many thought would be a weak link this season.
Has he shown enough to where we can pass on Ogbuehi?
In lieu of a stud pass rusher? Yes.

Seriously?  Lol, Ogbehi has had a down year but I think its because he is better at RT.  Just like I think Jake Matthews should be RT.

If we go OT early hopefully it will be Brandon Scherff out of Iowa.  Most have him as the best run blocker in the draft

Would we be passing on him in the 1nd round?
We won't pick a lineman in the first round this season. Won't happen.

Would love La'el Collins in a trade down.  Can play anywhere, but center on the line.

The jury says that right now, he's not good. At all.
