Quote:We know one thing.
Henne isn't the answer. Never has been, never will be.
And Aside from Bortles, what else do we have to look forward to? Nothing. I cannot blame fans for wanting to see Bortles. It is week 2 and it feels like a lost season.
I think they knew that the Oline was going to be like this and that's why they are letting Henne be the sacrificial goat until they gel. That guy got his butt handed to him yesterday, got up every time, and went back to the huddle for the next play. They don't want Bortles to get Carr Bombed in the early going.
A few things that really annoy me with Gus. There have been clock management issues in multiple games that kids playing Madden know how to solve better than our coaches. Calling timeout on 4th down with 3 seconds left before the half was especially egregious this Sunday. They should have called timeout right after the sack when there was about 22 seconds on the clock. Then the offense wouldn't dare try a hail mary because we'd have a few seconds to try to score ourselves from near midfield. If we had 15 seconds with a timeout, we might get in field goal range with one pass or at worst try a hail mary of our own. With the timeout they'd have to punt which means you eliminate a risk of giving up points before the half. Just basic gamesmanship seems to be missing from this staff.
That said, clock management can be learned and it was impressive how much young players improved throughout last year. If the young players can continue to improve at that rate, we'll be fine. So, I'm on the fence.
My problem isn't with Gus its with his coaches which I guess falls back on Gus. THe Oline coach needs to go he obviously can't judge talent as we seem to have none on the line. At this point we should be cutting all the borderline guys on the line in favor of a revolving door til we find one who works, yea a revolving door sucks but could it be worse than what we have? Offensive play calling is horrid, the offense sets the defense up to fail by keeping them ont he field all the time.
I want to know what exactly we get for all the money we have saved this year under the cap? We spent it on nothing on the line or the Dbacks and it shows.
I understand we want to go young but the youngs we have on the line suck, your telling me there isnt a better guy on a practice squad who can play center of left guard or a guy not even playing right now? Hell just sign the biggest fattest dudes you can and plop them on the line at least it would take the defense a little longer to get thru them.
At times yesterday it looked a video game or guys would stand to block as the defender was already thru them and then look around and see who they should block.

Carr was on an expansion team. If our line is that bad, then that is on Caldwell.

Our line is worse than that, and yes that is on Caldwell
Quote:Carr was on an expansion team. If our line is that bad, then that is on Caldwell.
This practically is an expansion team. Do you remember how bad the Oline was years 1 and 2 here? These guys have less experience than those did.
I thought there would be improvement. I guess the defense handing the ball to the offense for scores in one half of a game is better than last years start. Maybe the Redskins will get going and be a better team than projected and that domination won't be so bad by the end of the year.
Somehow I'm thinking it is going to be more of the same this year. And as the year progresses, all the talk of the 2015 pay off is going to be all hype and no real promise.
Quote:That's the problem. There isn't anyone that we can tank for this year in the 2015 draft. It's not loaded and we already have our QB. Bortles needs experience. And as others have said that you have missed, Bortles will probably make our O Line look a lot better since he won't take half the sacks that Henne has.
What's the problem? I don't think we're "tank"ing for anyone. Gene Smith set this franchise back several years...meaning 4-5. Our 2013 roster was considered one of the worst of all time. Our O-Line has given up 13 sacks in two games. What isn't so well known, is that during those games our rookie WRs (our starting 3) ran wrong routes over 10+ times against Washington. So, we have an awful O-Line and inexperienced WR core. Why should Bortles start know? Does anyone expect Henne to win us a Super Bowl? I don't. Bortles has made significant strides since we drafted him...let him stay healthy and make more. We'll imporve our O-Line through the draft and free agency and our recievers will be better with another year in the system. Jag fans...we can't forget how our team was last year. Let the process roll. Endure the aches and pains and just wait. Waiting is boring but you can't turn things around in a day with the O-Line we have. I have faith in Bradley and Caldwell. I really do. And with that faith I trust waiting a few years before results.
Be patient.
Save the O-Line.
Then let Bortles Shine.
Nobody can win a Super Bowl with our O-Line.

Nobody can win a Super Bowl with our O-Line.
Nobody can win a SB with this line.... And our quarterback can only learn so much by not playing. So we're gonna let our young receivers develop a rapport with henne.... Then play bortles. That makes sense. Why not let Bortles and the receivers develop a rapport now and not waste time.
Ive got news for ya, if bortles doesnt get a good deal of experience this year, we aren't going anywhere next year. Regardless of when they start, that first year is often rough.

lol, win a Super Bowl, I'm just hoping they can win a game.

Because the WRs can't develop a rapport with the rookie QB when they're busy running the wrong routes. If CSIII and Sanders were in there, you might have a point. But combining a young OL, an even younger WR corps, and a rookie QB is just asking for trouble, and really really ugly and ineffective offense.

Combining anything with Henne is the same result.
Edit:
Adding a positive. The coaching staff has him playing so stiff that he hasn't thrown a pick six yet. So there is a a small positive.
Quote:Gus Bradley is doing the best he can. The only thing I disagree with is Chad Henne starting. Other than that, Jedd Fisch is terrible and the Offense is too. He is one of the few bright spots on this team.
I don't agree with your assessment of Jedd Fisch. Until the O-line starts blocking to an acceptable degree and Blake is the quarterback I can't see how you can make an evaluation of Fisch. His hands are tied behind his back, can't run, and can't pass mostly because of the players not the plays.
The fact is, for the last six quarters, this team has stunk. Stunk. This is the moment of truth for Gus (and Dave, really). If we are in year two, and we still stink, I mean stink like a dead animal, then to what end was the so-called "culture change" the team supposedly went through last year?
I like Dave Caldwell, and I really like Gus, and I hope they succeed, but with what has happened so far in year two, I just hope they are not in over their heads.
We can talk about what a great leader Gus is, and how much the players like playing for him, but at some point, the rubber meets the road and we either have some results or we don't.
The ship is sinking and the captain needs to do something. It's time for Gus and the rest of the coaching staff to show us whether they are up to the task.

This ship is in dry dock getting refitted with an occassional shake down cruise to identify other problems. We haven't even broken the champagne bottle on the SS Jaguars yet.
Bradley's not that issue. Its the OC and the scheme of players. I do think we need to change OC before we chop Bradley's head off.
Maybe we need to switch both QB and HC... get it... "switch" :woot:

Still trying I see. Keep trying and someday you'll get there.
Neither I nor (in my opinion) anyone else can fairly judge the head coach after only two seasons given the black hole that this team was left in by former GM Gene Smith. We need to temper our expectations! Yup, maybe we were overly hyped by the talking heads about the direction of the team. Consequently, when the team lost (and lost badly) in it's first two games this season, the cries of woe and dismay rattled the roof. This fan base has had to put up with too many years of horrible game day performance and have choked on the long list of excuses they've been fed. Frankly, it doesn't help when, after the team has gotten it's doors blown off in two consecutive games, the head coach comes out smiling and spouting Tony Robbin'esk platitudes.
Still... it is only two games out of a sixteen game schedule. The truly bad part of this is that one of those drubbings the Jags took was a game in which they were expected to be competitive. To say that this was a 'sobering' experience would be an understatement. 41-10... and the Redskins did that without their starting quarterback and a key wide receiver. How could the Jags, after two drafts still be getting blown out like this? We know from the first half of the Eagles game that the defense is capable of stuffing a good teams offense. What is happening that is crushing the defenses ability to stop other teams? The answer is our offense.... or more to the point, the lack thereof.
Gus was the defensive coordinator of the seahawks. We know they had a very good defense, and we know that Gus has essentially instituted that same defensive plan here. He has gone so far as to bring former seahawk defenders here to help run it. We know it can work, but it's not working here. The difference is that in Seattle, along with a very good defense, they had a very effective offense.
It has been said that defense wins games, and maybe that's true. However, the defense can't stay on the field the majority of the time in a game or they will be too tired to effectively perform. For the defense to have a chance to 'catch their breath', the offense must be able to sustain drives. The ability to convert 3rd downs is key to this and the Jaguars are among the leagues worst performing team in this category.
Right now, there is nobody on the field for our offense who gives the impression of having the ability to turn things around. We have a poor offensive line due to over-paid/sub-par veteran talent, and inexperienced rookies. The o-line is the key to any offense being able to sustain drives. You need the ability... or at least the threat... of a run game to sustain drives. You can't run if your o-line can't run block effectively.
Sometimes, a really good quarterback can minimize the effect of a poor line by being mobile, making smart and fast decisions, and having exceptionally good passing ability. We hope that this is a quality that we will see once Blake Bortles takes the field. Chad Henne is a game manager/backup quarterback and is doing the best he can; but his best isn't good enough given the shortcomings of our o-line. Result; 3 and out. Repeat over, and over. The defense is on the field too long too quickly and gets 'gassed'. The Jags get blown out yet again.
What we have on our offensive line isn't Gus Bradley fault. He is the head coach, not the general manager. He has to play with what he's dealt. Our GM can only draft what is available at the time or acquire in f/a. He has had only two drafts in which to, essentially, draft a whole new team. Not everything needed is available in every draft. Pro bowl linemen do not grow on trees.
So where then does that leave the fans of the Jaguars? In spite of the poor showing of the first two games, there is hope; believe it or not, the franchise actually is moving in the right direction to become contenders once again. But we are not realistically in the window this season for that to happen. We are still going to be on the receiving end of the occasional 'drubbing' due to our offensive line shortcomings. The line will get better as the season progresses and wins will result; but until then, the only thing the fans can do is endure.... and wait. There is no reason to want to throw Gus out after only two seasons. Give him three seasons; if at the end of the 2015 season the Jags are not 8-8 or better, then there is reason to implore Khan to do something. Until then, enjoy what you can, and endure what you must.
By the way, it should go without saying that this is all just my opinion. I'm no sports authority...

Gene Smith is arguably and likely the worst General Manager in the history of professional sports.
