Matt Millen was bad, but he drafted Jeff Backus, Roy Williams, Calvin Johnson, Gosder Cherilus etc.. Gene Smith not only missed on most of his picks, but he failed to draft anyone that made a significant impact, Smith is by far the worst, and it's not close.

Quote:People should be losing faith in Gus and Dave at this point. The talent level isn't looking improved (Beadles is a complete bust so far) so that's on the GM and the team isn't prepared on Sundays, that's on Gus and he is starting to look like an inept leader.
Basically after 18 months they've had their chance? Ok, for a minute I was starting to think that we're impatient.
I'm going to give him another draft at least. Sometimes progress has to reach a certain point before it makes an obvious difference on the field. We're not much older than some college teams.

Is anyone arguing against that position? The debate is around what is wrong I think, not if something is wrong.

Quote:Play the dense card. Some people think that with all the problems on this team, there is one simple fix. I don't personally think it's that simple myself but I don't think you need to start *completely* over so early in the rebuild process.

I can't believe how many witch hunts go on on this board.
After a season plus 2 games.... given the roster in the situation it was in, you're questions faith in Gus?
Honestly he hasn't had enough time to earn some faith, much less lose it.
I answered "yes" because I certainly haven't lost faith I never technically had. Taking the wait and see approach and using the guidline of "3 year rebuild" I temper expectations for him and Dave.
I would like to see some improvement but I think I will eventually and it isn't going to happen over a couple weeks where we are suddenly winning regularly. 8-8 was my lofty goal for this team and I still have faith that can be reached.
The Dline is miles away from where it was 2 seasons ago. The WR corp is young but has obvious talent we haven't seen in years. Blake is waiting in the wings....
Patience is required. 18 games is not enough of a sample size, given what we had to work with, to deem Gus a Bust. Or anyone in the F.O.

My faith in him isn't lost but you're right, we shouldn't be seeing blowouts like last Sunday. They were barely acceptable last year, not acceptable this year at all IMO.

We won 4 games and 2 of them were against the atrocious texans in 2013. The majority of the year consisted of getting out butt handed too us every week. Since Dave/Gus have taken over this team has been beaten by 250 points in 18 games. That is down right pathetic.
"be patient" "all in" etc Sounds like the whole Gene Smith regime 2.0
I am hoping to see improvement and hope that we aren't looking at the mean gene situation again. So far this team has not played like a professional team at a consistent level.

Yup... double digit blow-outs have happened with way too much frequency with this club; no argument there. I just contend that our past (and to a very unfortunate degree) present situation is still closely linked to the terrible state that the franchise was left in by Gene Smith. The gravity of it is just now sinking in for some of us. Dave Caldwell gives every impression of being on the right track to rebuild the roster into contenders. But.... (do these parenthesis make my but look too big?) given the hole we were left in, the rebuild is and will take at least 3 years. We were told that we shouldn't expect double digit drubbings this season... well, ya know, maybe it would be smarter not to make predictions like that until you know you've got the players to back them up. Until our o-line gets it collective head out of it's collective (bad word removed) drubbings will continue. We've lost our pro-bowl TE who was a key blocker for at least 8 weeks, so things aren't getting easier... defenses know about our troubles and are going to be coming with their ears pinned back. If Gus is going to stick with Henne (as it now appears he is) then somehow Henne needs to start using quick screens and dumps and burn those defenses when they commit 8 or more to the line. I'm not even concerned with 'big downfield plays now... I just want to see sustained drives so our defense doesn't vapor lock and fall over dead exhausted by half-time! Those sustained drives must end with TD's more often than FG's. I really don't want to see Scoby unless it's to kick an extra point...but I'd settle for three points rather than 3-n-out any day...
enough ranting, sorry....

The massive hole this franchise has been in for the last decade is a lot to overcome in 2 seasons. Rosters were flushed, some pieces were found but there's a long way to go.. It is what it is and nobody could have turned this team into a winner over night..
Yes, they are losers right now, but they wont be losers for too much longer, in the big picture of things.
