Why can some not take pre-draft talk for what it is. Smoke and mirrors. Could be true, maybe not.

It would be a pretty big reach from everything that a normal person can know from his gameplay. However, I have also heard numerous reports about how he is just stunning in his interviews and classroom sessions. If his mental aptitude for the game really is as off the charts as they say then I could see how he would have the league enamored over him.

"So then I told Peter King that we "really like" Jimmy Garoppolo"

Quote:King is hearing that four QB-needy teams (Houston, Jacksonville, Cleveland, Oakland) are "strongly considering" passing on the position with their first picks and waiting for round two. Perhaps that's why there's so much buzz around guys like Garoppolo and Pittsburgh's Tom Savage right now. Garoppolo, from the same college as Tony Romo, has a lightning-quick release but gets noticeably rattled in the pocket and has some arm strength questions at 6'2/219.

And how many times now have you insisted that Carr gets scared in the pocket while Garoppolo stands strong and isn't rattled by pressure?

It's happened, guys. He's posted a quote from someone who actually knows what they're talking about that completely refutes everything he's said about Garoppolo.
The difference between Gabbert and Garoppolo is there - at least in the production...

Look at Gabbert's last season in college (in the same offense that Chase Daniel put up video game numbers) and then look at Garoppolo's....

Plus, we wouldn't be selecting Garoppolo at 10 after a trade up that cost us an additional 2nd rounder....we be merely using our 2nd rounder. And probably also draft another QB later in the draft as insurance, too.

"Merely using our second rounder."

Gene, is that you?

Also, way to backpedal. So now the issue isn't that he caves under pressure. It's that he put up great numbers despite caving under pressure. Know who else fits your very own description of "caves under pressure but put up great numbers"? Derek freaking Carr, that's who, but Carr did it against much better competition, and despite your opinion of him, he didn't cave under pressure nearly as often as you'd have us believe. Just because David couldn't handle pressure doesn't mean that Derek isn't capable of doing so.

Game, set, match.

A qb with bad pocket presence is a qb I don't want regardless of round.

I don't think I ever said quote "Garoppolo isn't rattled by pressure". He does look more like an NFL QB via mechanics/ delivery/ mannerisms/ command, than David Carr's brother, tho. He just seems to look the part of an NFL QB on the field.

No, Gene would take him with the 1st rounder.....because, you know, he always seemed to fall in love with one player, and never have a contingency plan, ala Alualu....
Why do teams like Tom Salvage the guy did not look good at Pitt

I don't think comparing Garoppolo to Gabbert as far as pocket presence goes is fair. Gabbert looks like he is afraid of being hit. Garoppolo's problem, at least from what I have seen from his film, is he doesn't always do a good job of sensing the pressure, but it doesn't "rattle" him.

I will say this Jimmy G definitely looks like the he could be the welcome face of a franchise. He has that starting QB look to him.

I've seen him do the patented Gabbert crouch and bail out of the pocket. No thanks, not again.

Jimmy definitely has the face of a franchise look to him...but he does crumble also. He is way more like Blaine than Carr is.

Once again, you're grading Carr based on his brother's name. Let's take a look at a small number of brother NFL QBs, shall we?

Peyton Manning - All-time great, Eli Manning - Decidedly less-so, but still solid throughout his career

Matt Hasselbeck - Solid QB for a long time, Tim Hasselbeck - Married that chick from Survivor and that's about it

Josh McCown - Serviceable for much of his career, Luke McCown - Benched in favor of Gabbert

Carson Palmer - Very good QB for the majority of his career, Jordan Palmer - Can't hold a roster spot as anything more than a deep reserve

Aaron Rodgers - Might one day be remembered as better than Favre, Jordan Rodgers - Might one day be remembered as better than Jordan Palmer

I think my point is made. One brother being crap does not guarantee that the other will be any more so than one being great guarantees that the other will be. Now get over yourself on the "David Carr's brother" garbage being the root of your dislike for Derek Carr, please. It's a basis for grading that's no more rooted in reality than the perception than Andy Dalton couldn't play QB because he's got red hair.

While the top QBs in this draft seems to having their stock sliding. The 2nd tier QB's draft stock is certainly rising. Guys like Garoppolo and Pittsburgh's Tom Savage probably will go as early as the end of 1st round and early 2nd round of NFL draft.

Taking a dive (i.e. similar to Manning) is different than actually playing scarred. When he knows he is going to get hit, I have seen him take a fall here and there. But I have also seen him take blind side hits and deliver the ball, or just take the hit and keep on going about his business.

To say the hits affect him like they did Gabbert is unfair, is all I am saying.

none of the brothers on that list were really expected to do much though, ...and they didn't. (other than Eli)

David OTOH, was - he was a top overall pick, and he crumbled. His brother will too. That trait runs in their family, can't hack the "big time".

I rather have Mettenberger, but pick 39 isn't too high of a reach.  Worst case they another Henne...

I saw Gabbert "take hits," too.  Garoppolo crumples just like he does, AND he sees phantoms.  I wouldn't take Jimmy before round 4.

Carr, however, I'd take in round 2 because he has an elite trait (deep ball placement).  However, I picture 'Zona taking him to groom behind Palmer.

Good question. Guy got sacked more times than any D-1 QB in the entire nation(41 times last year alone)
