Gene didn't care about his picks at all.  I love how he sold Cox on us: "No, guys, I didn't trade our second rounder next year to draft a third round player, we just got TWO second rounders THIS year!" #genius

Just to further show how evaluations aren't an exact science. 

 

Peter King -  Garoppolo, from the same college as Tony Romo, has a lightning-quick release but gets noticeably rattled in the pocket and has some arm strength questions at 6'2/219.

 

CBS sports - Level-headed and always under control with a strong leadership presence. Confident thrower and short memory. However, needs to get his feet under control on a consistent basis and regularly step into his throws. Must continue and develop his pocket awareness and internal clock to feel pressure. Holds the ball too long at times and will take unnecessary hits.

 

NFL.com -  Tough-minded and poised in the pocket -- can withstand a hit and pop back up. Highly competitive. Smart, respected, vocal team leader. Very durable, experienced, four-year starter,  but does not always feel pressure in the pocket.

Of the guys I've watched video on he *looks* the most impressive, more so than some of the higher ranked guys. The huge caveat is the quality of competition which is why he's not likely to go until the 3rd round. I'm sure Caldwell will have done his research and if Garrapolo is still there in the 3rd, I wouldn't complain.

Firstly, NFL.com might have the worst "scouts" on the interwebz.

 

Secondly, I feel like they're just trying to say the exact same thing--sub-par pocket presence.

Just a guess that the Jaguars "liked" him enough to ask for him to be added to the Senior Bowl roster in January.

15-20 plays from the 568 passes he attempted doesn't really mean "he sees phantoms and crumbles"

 

That is literally less than 5% of his passing attempts, which I am sure you even see the future HOF QBs in the NFL make those mistakes 5% of the time as well.

Yes. I am saying sub-par pocket presence. But what we are arguing about is how he lets it affect him.....it doesn't, and Gabbert let it get to him and it affected his play (even when Gabbert was in college)

I am good with taking a guy like that. He, Mettenberger, Murray, or Carr. Draft one, bring him along slowly, and let him rip in a season or two if he's ready. This team has never drafted and developed a QB outside of Garrard. They need to start doing it regularly.

All this really says is what we all already knew.  Peter King is stating the obvious here.  The Jags probably won't burn a first round pick on a quarterback.  Shocker.  They've liked Garoppolo and a few other guys who should be there in the 2nd round.  Again, is this breaking news?

Agreed. Don't know much about the guy, but it would nice if he sat for a year or two and learned the speed of the NFL. For all we know, he could adjust as quickly as Flacco.

That's basically what happened the entire USC game, yet you still use just that one game example as a reason to label him Carrbage...

Personally, I hope we pass on Garoppolo  I don't think he's going to be what a lot of people seem to think he will be.  It's reminding me more and more of Matt Scott.  Last year everyone (yes, I'm using hyperbole) wanted him in the 3rd or 4th round.  I think Jimmy Garoppolo will be better than Scott, but I don't think he'll ever be an NFL starter.

No, no, you're totally right about going JUST by that clip Dog, and that wasn't my intention. Sorry if it seemed that way.

 

 The sack-stat was more important IMO. He was the most sacked QB in division 1 football. By a lot. Second was that Arizona St kid Kelly I think.

Guy got roughed up in the ACC, which is not necessarily known as a defensive-conference if you know what i mean. Wonder what will happen when NFL blitzes are coming down on him.

 

You're right tho Mad-Dog, Clip was just for visual-aid, 41-sacks in the ACC are far more interesting to me than any 1-clip.

I've seen the same highlight reels everyone else has for Garoppolo.  What I see is a guy who needs to work on his footwork.  He can make the throws that would be required in this offense.  He's got decent mobility.  I didn't see a guy who crumbled under pressure.  But, I did see someone who got happy feet at times.  As a developmental guy, I'd have no problem with him as the pick.  The team clearly likes him since Peter King has announced it. 

People seem to be under the impression that the QB we draft will start day 1. We are looking for a DEVELOPMENTAL prospect to groom at QB. Whoever we draft will have ample time to iron out any flaws and weaknesses he may have.
