The draft is a crapshoot. Nothing is guaranteed. The best player in the entire class may not be the player taken first, second, or third overall.
Heck, just look at last year's draft to see that this is true. I can't find a name in the first 15-20 that I would consider the best player in the draft.
I know it's only been a year and maybe somebody will develop into the best player that yr but so far, meh.
The draft indeed can be a crapshoot. I can't count how many teams picked in the top 5 after spending many hours scouting, interviewing and watching the combine only to end up with a dud of a top 5 pick. It happens nearly every single year.
The good news is we'll most likely still be in position to choose between Teddy, Carr, Manziel and Bortles regardless of where we pick.
And if we decide to go a different direction with our first rounder we still should be in prime position to snag a QB in the second tier in either McCarron, Fales, or Garoppolo.
That's true but in recent years the top draft picks from a productivity standpoint seem to have been panning out more and more consistently from a production standpoint expectation standpoint versus later in the first round.
And by top picks I mean like top five
Texans havent clinched number 1. if they win next week and the redskins lose the rams will have the 1st pick.
People wanting to pick Bortles need to remember this...

hayes and allen out, gratz out after a couple of plays cyp and evans banged up, no roy miller on the line
no shorts, blackmon, mjd banged up,
with all those injuries and the number of young players on the field I was happy we could keep it close
added if we end up with a top 4 pick and have a crack at one of bridgewater bortles barr or clowney well i'm very happy
gabbert and bortles also played in different systems in college.

( I don't think Bortles is a top 5 pick personally, but they are very, very different players. Bad comparison. Bortles has
way more potential, IMO. )
There is a great, young coaching staff in place. They are getting every last ounce out of every player.
As long as Caldwell doesn't completely botch the picks, what's to worry about?
I couldn't care less who they draft, as long as they produce.

You realise Gabbert was a top 10 pick, talked about first pick, based solely on his potential right??
Not a bad comparison, a pretty dead on comparison IMO. He's the type of qb people just fall in love with for no apparent reason other than he's looks like and has the arm of an NFL qb.

big arm, nope if there is anything i can criticise bortles for it's a lack of arm strength.
i think you are thinking of carr who is the big arm guy
bortles is the opposite of gabbert if you watch him, pocket presence is one of his strengths, he takes hits well and is more mobile the gabbert
however he doesn't have the power to stretch the field and occassionally overtrusts his arms and tries to fit it in to a too tight spot
@nyc: i would agree with you on the top 5 thing and would love to trade down and pick him up, but with a feeding frenzy that should be behind us in cleveland minnesota and tampa i don't think he will be there if we traded down
i reckon alot of qbs will go at an inflated pick with teams reluctant to miss out... though i am quite happy for us to go de instead i very much doubt he will make it out of the top 10

the only thing I would add is that Gabbert came from a spread offense.Like Keenum of Houston.Seems spread QB's mostly fail
The actual draft position is less of a concern as to the importance of drafting a playmaker regardless of their position. We seriously need a defensive playmaker and I wouldn't mind selecting him in round one. The QB position is plentiful and unless we select him in round one, he'll sit for several games...

His arm strength is very much his strength as a player.. The ability to make all the throws, putting them on the right shoulder with the right zip etc.
He panics in the pocket, and no he is not more athletic than Gabbert, Gabbert is just as athletic, but you take that panicking in the pocket at the college level and then go the NFL and the slightest pressure and they screw up..
This guy is a product of the hype machine..I have no doubt he will go in the first round but he is not nfl talent.

Like I say he's built up of hype because he looks like and has the arm strength of what people perceive an NFL talent should have, I never said they was the same player I said they we're both built up in the same way and both will bust in the same way.

This says it. All you tanker losers wanting high draft picks fail to see the whole picture. Your world revolves around a single, untested college player who you <i>hope </i>improves the team while seeming to ignore the proven factors of the current organization.

I agree whoever we draft I'll have full support for.
And I have no doubt our front office has much more nfl knowledge than I do!!
I just personally think Carr and bortles would be a mistake, and I honestly don't see us drafting either of then.
