McNair wants a guy with Head Coaching experience and NFL experience.  The article I read listed Jack Del Rio (Please hire him, Bob!) Love Smith, Jon Gruden, Ken Wisenhunt, and interim head coach Wade Phillips (ha!) as guys that fit that criteria.  Shannahan would be an interesting hire.

When it lists Shanahan, do you think it means Mike or his son, Kyle?

If the following report proves true, both will be available.  If Mike is fired, it's safe to assume Kyle won't be back with the Redskins in 2014:

Based on what McNair listed as qualifications he'd like in a coach I would say Mike.  Though of the two I'd take Kyle over Mike at this point in time.  I think Mike's best days as a coach have come and gone.  No Elway = struggles for Shanahan.

I saw this too.  I don't see either Shanahan surviving much longer in Washington.  Today's drubbing by the Chiefs may be the end of the Shanny era in Washington.
Why would they hire Shanahan after just firing a guy from his coaching tree? It makes no sense at all. Just as Lovie Smith makes no sense given his radically different defensive schemes to what the Texans have built on the roster if the owner likes the defense as is.

So the short list would be either Wade Phillips, or a downfield passing offensive guy. Gruden and Wisenhunt are good fits. What is Schottenheimer doing these days?

Posting this here. Wade is lobbying hard for the Texans job. Looks as if the Texans have no interest in Shanahan or Gruden, with top candidates being Wade Phillips, Ken Whisenhunt, and Lovie Smith.

In my oppinion, Lovie would be a mistake, as they would have to completely overhaul the defense, something Bob McNair says he thinks is unnecessary. Whisenhunt is their guy I think.
Quote:Yup I was summarizing with my McNair comment but TMD you have it laid out in full.  I got a chuckle that after the game Kubiak wanted to stay with Shaub and then was fired with the owner saying they are staying with Case.  Yikes!! Sure like our owner more and more.

I like our owner better... he isn't shipping home games off to London.
Quote:So, the owner mandated the team should tank, meeting with the players and coaches to let them know his intentions?

I know the answer to this question, but do you realize just how idiotic you sound?

Complete B.C.

What's with all of this "Texans are tanking" talk?  They aren't tanking, they're trying to win games, but they just suck this year.  Teams who tank get blown out in losses... Houston despite losing 11 straight games have been in every game outside of STL, SF, and BAL..  For 7 straight weeks they've only lost by one score or less.  They aren't "tanking", they simply just find ways to lose this season and anybody who thinks Matt Schaub gives the Texans a better chance to win needs to have their head examined.. reason why Kubiak got fired.  Matt Schaub is done and he'll never be a NFL starter again. The guy hands out INTs like home owners do candy on Halloween. Bob McNair calling for Keenum to start is the right thing to do, because even he knows this and needs to know what he has at the QB position heading into the draft.  That isn't "tanking", it's simply the right thing to do.  Why they heck would you waste your time throwing Schaub out there? Especially when you already know what he's going to give you.

Kubiak needed to be fired.. he should've been fired weeks before and the fact that McNair fired him doesn't mean he lacks class, (like a poster in this thread implied) McNair showed way more patience than most owners would've ever given Kubiak.  Kubiak should've been fired in 2010..

I wonder who Phillips would pick to run the offense. If he gets hired, it stands to reason that he'll retain a lot of the Defensive staff, but probably overhaul the Offensive part. Who did he have running his Offense in Denver all those years ago?

If they hired Lovie Smith, they wouldn't have to "completely overhaul" the defense as they're only two years removed from playing in a 4-3.  J.J. Watt can play every position along the D line and Cushing already is the signal caller on defense, so playing MLBer will be no problem.

I also highly doubt they hire Whisenhunt. They want Bill O'Brien and David Shaw more.

"They" might, but that methinks that above quote is more about what YOU want than anything they do.
Conjecture is cool.
I hope the Texans hire Jack Del Rio. Thats what they deserve.

No, McNair showed his lack of class by bringing the Jaguars into it.

He should have just fired him, said it was for performance, and left it at that. His mentioning that it was because the team got swept by the Jaguars should have been left on the cutting room floor.

I'm looking forward to the Jaguars wiping their butt with your team for years to come.

better hope they mess up the coaching hire then.

They haven't gotten anything related to coaching right so far.

Well, fair point....but that doesn't mean they couldn't get lucky.

I'm sensing a Wade Phillips promotion and another 4-5 years of mediocrity.

I just hope they get the QB selection wrong one way or another since the right QB can make a bad coach look good. (like Peyton did for Caldwell)

Wade Phillips will never happen......and even if it did - (which would flat out stun me) he'd get a 3 year Mularkey type contract that could be eaten so fast that he'd be gone at the first crack in the armour.

I think you underestimate the arrogance of the texans. They think they're almost there. They'll want to keep a good thing going, and Phillips has been a good thing for their defense.

I also suspect they'll give him the same sort of leeway they gave kubiak to keep being mediocre for years.

I see a lot of 7 to 9 win years for them in the immediate future.

Picking a Mularkey type might actually be better for them in a way since they'd be able to tell more quickly that they need to blow it up. I could see them wasting JJ Watt's prime years on mediocrity as it is.
