Not to also mention that Florida has no state income tax.

No state tax is big time money. Bonus gets hit at capital gain rate as it is. NY is a big tax state (lived there for long time).  They would have to be 30% over our offer to compensate. Unless you get ad or outside revenue opportunities, FL and TX are a huge boon.

904nette and Michel?

We can hope!

With all the moves they have made in free agency, a running back like Michel in the 2nd would be a possibility. Not sure if they'd keep Yeldon in that case depending on his salary cap situation.

With the signing of Norwell, add another guard in the middle of the draft, put Marcedes on the left side of the line, Niles Paul to the right........

Run the wishbone with Fournette and Michel.

So question: I read somewhere (can't find it for the life of me now) that he's getting a 15 mil signing bonus and a 2 mil salary for this year. Does only the 2 mil count towards the cap? Or does the signing bonus as well?

The signing bonus is spread over all the years, so $15M over 5 years is $3M per year. With his $2M base salary this year and the $3M Signing Bonus hit, he will count for $5M against the cap this year.

Norwell on podium at Jags presser:

"I feel this team is going to pick up right where they left off and go win a superbowl. That's why I came here."

Wow, so no wonder we were able to hit so many other players lol This is how you structure a big deal lol

Prediction: Norwell will not be giving a Jason Kelce speech at the super bowl parade. One soft spoken guy.

I am shocked that they are only paying 5M this year. Same set up as the Hayden deal, back loaded. I don't know if I like these backloaded deals...

You can definitely tell the oldest FO member in the league is in charge now with the change in contract philosophies. They aren't taking care of the future now nearly like they did when the youngins were running the front office.

What? We have NO ONE to re-sign next offseason, next year is the perfect year to absorb all the big cap hits

I don't see any major shift in contract philosophy.  I still see lots of "outs" written into the third and fourth years of most of these deals.

Besides - the cap situation is different from year to year as is the team's "win now window."  Those things directly affect the FA approach.

The out has a lot more dead money in it. Calais only 3 mil, Telvin 2.4 mil, Linder 0, Church 0, Gipson 2.4...Norwell 9 mil.

Thats a big reach. The reason its more back loaded is because we are actively competing right now.

Calais was 30 when he signed the deal.
Telvin much smaller deal  and wasn't on the market.
Linder wasn't on the market
Church much smaller deal
Gibson much smaller deal.

Dead money for smaller deals is always going to be less. Extensions are always much more team friendly.

Quote:1. Signing bonus: $15 million.
2. 2018 base salary (fully guaranteed): $2 million.
3. 2019 base salary (fully guaranteed): $13 million.
4. 2020 base salary: $11.5 million.
5. 2021 base salary: $12 million.
6. 2022 base salary: $13 million.

It’s a five-year, $51.5 million deal, but the structure makes it a two-year, fully-guaranteed $30 million deal, with a team option for each of the last three.
The cap numbers are $5 million, $16 million, $14.5 million, $15 million, and $16 million.

So it's kind of a two-year deal. Genius.

And people are worried about the cap space ? Not me with this great FO.

Is it really a 2 year deal if we cut him and leave 9 mil in dead cap in year 3? I don't think so. Heck it would even hurt in year 4 and leave 6 mil in dead cap. I think it's one we have to ride out.

Yeah. They've structured many deal with "outs" and this isn't really one of them. They are counting on this guy to be a stud run blocker for Fournette for the duration.

One player's deal doesn't indicate a shift in philosophy - gotta look at all of them for that.
You're pretty much always going to see backloaded deals unless your team is loaded with cap space which we're not.

The idea is two-fold. For starters, it acts as an incentive for the player to keep earning his higher cap hit. Also, the final year(s) is often paper money meaning the player likely never sees it as he would most likely either find himself waived or extended first.
