A pair of 3rd RD picks in next year's draft may enable them to move up for a big name prospect. Whether it's for a QB, OL, DL or what have you remains to be seen. But you could see them potentially use those two picks to get back up into the late 1st RD or early 2nd RD. Fine by me as long as they land their guy.

Fowler wasn't coming back after this season. Too crowded already. They invested in Bryan as well. Like him or not (I don't like him currently) he's in their plans for the long haul.
Agree that this was about the best they could do at this point. Many questioned the pick of Fowler over Leonard Williams when it was made. Williams hasn't been great, but much better than Fowler. This move also tells me that the brass realizes that the playoffs are not going to happen this year, so it's better to get the draft picks to possibly move up in round 1.
Wow is he going to start there? What a fantastic spot for him!

I'm shocked they made this deal. By week 11 I see us tied for first in the division with Houston. Seems like the FO doesn't share that same optimism.

It's not just 2 picks free and clear.  You have to weigh it against the compensatory pick we would have gotten versus his value to us the rest of the season.  Compensatory picks start being awarded at the end of the 3rd round so we did ensure ourselves of at least getting that best case scenario late 3rd compensatory pick plus the 2020 5th versus the uncertainty of waiting to see how things shake out.

I wouldn't say this is a huge win for us considering he could've helped us this year and we would have gotten something for him anyway had he walked in free agency.  If it would have wound up being a late 3rd as a compensatory pick, we would have essentially secured a 2020 5th for letting him go early and giving a strong signal that we're conceding the division this year half way thru the season.  I'd say that is more of a questionable move than a huge win.
could this be getting rid of the problems in the locker room. Wasnt he the one who whispered to Yann "this is the preferential treatment i was talking about" on teh sidlines a troublemaker like that getting in ppls ears tearing the team apart is a good enough reason to get rid of him.
Rams in the “win now” mode

Wish we were able to stay in that mode

I'm not sure I draw that conclusion from the trade.  He wasn't adding that much to the defense.  And the team secures a higher pick than what they would have after the season.

He provided very important depth at one of the most important positions in football. If the Jags were to a make a run we sure would need him. The pick isn't that much higher, Rams might win it all. 32nd pick in the 3rd vs what the 33rd for compensation?

Guess we will be seeing a lot more Taven. Time to see what he's got.

Again, how does David Caldwell still have a job? Good God!
I think the trade was great... 3rd round still has great value... yeah fowler was a 3rd overall but certainly didnt play like he was... he didnt start and only played in some 3rd and longs... the defense isnt the issue, health and the offense is

Question....

If Fowler signs somewhere else for a big deal.... do the Rams get comp for it?

I disagree. Fowler was a role player for us, and with Yannick on the line, he wasn't going to start. If the Rams think he's more than a spot rusher, more power to them, but several years in Jacksonville make me fairly certain he's not. I don't see this as a white flag on the season, just getting good value for a guy we were going to let walk for nothing.

I think this opens up the door for Lerentee McCray to show us what he can do. He's flashed in the past as an occasional rusher, but with Fowler gone I think the team is going to give him more looks. Bryan might get some more time too, but he and Smoot are being developed as big ends, not "pin your ears back and go" pass rushers.

I agree that he'll get some of Fowler's snaps. He's definitely flashed a number of times in that role.
Nice move for us.  I've been pissy about the Front Office but he does make nice draft pick trades.  This is better than compensatory picks for sure and locks it in now.  The way we have been playing, I don't think we would have beaten what the trade gets us. EDIT: As in Fowler's play wouldn't beat this yield.

I think we may have a victory in the Bye week.

If his contract exceeds an amount against what they bring in for free agents yes they could get at best a 3rd and at worst a 6th or 7th, or none at all.

Comp picks aren't guaranteed. But in theory, yeah they could get one.
He wasn’t gonna bring in a 3rd round compensatory pick.

Ehhhh careful, one injury away from everyone freaking out at DE. He was much needed depth for a playoff team. I still think we will be tied in first by week 11. Jags handle Colts/Steelers and Texans lose to Broncos/Redskins. IMO though he was needed depth, but I understand the trade.

Let's not forget that he's the only pass rusher with success against Brady.

Anyways IF the Rams get comp'd when Fowler signs huge $$$ in offseason, talk about a steal lol.

Wow...

What a fantastic trade for the Rams then. Fowler is going to get paaaaaaaaid in the offseason. They'll recoup the 3rd in 2020. Wow.
Why are some convinced we would get a 3rd round compensatory for him? Isn't that based on contract, playing time, awards, etc... ? He doesnt play a huge % of snaps. And will be interesting to see what his new contract looks like but I think you've got to be like top 5% in order to merit the 3rd round comp.
I think everything has been said as far as I'm concerned. He was leaving at the end of the year so getting the picks for him was a good thing. I kinda wish they would have sent him to a team that is going to have a higher draft number. This 3rd is basically a high 4 if the rams win it all, which is looking like a strong possibility. I would have loved to see them get a player, QB, WR or OL instead of the picks because we need all the help we can get right now. Interested to see who they fill his roster spot with. "Franchise" - This is all I can find and doesn't help much: Cut players do not count in the number of players lost, because the original team had the option to keep that player. These additional picks are intended to provide compensation only for players who have a contract expire at the end of the year, and a team does not re-sign them. I know Fowler wasn't cut but in essence the Jags had the option to keep him so I believe it kinda works here. So no...the Jags won't get the Comp pick for him if he doesn't resign with the Rams.
