Even more curious was Caldwell's statement that Williams visited with a lot of teams with picks in the 4th round.

I re-examined walterfootball.com's prospects visits tracker, and not one mention of Quincy Williams visiting any team, including the Jaguars.

Of course, it's entirely possible that walterfootball doesn't know every visit or the activities of every team.

At about the 3 min mark, Williams said he had about 9 to 11 visits.

He definitely visited the Steelers, that came up while I was googling his name to find out who the heck he is...

I'll be rooting for the kid, but wow there was some talent still on the board there...
I know how you all feel about this pick.  I'm still mad about the Tom Brady selection.  How could a general manager waste a 6th round pick on a nobody?  Seriously, I'm willing to wait and see about this selection.
Head scratcher.
If they draft Butler or Harmon at WR today I'll forgive them for this pick.

The first bad pick. It signals they don’t believe anyone else in the draft can compete for a non special teams role so they’re just looking for camp fodder. I hate that strategy. Hakeem Butler, the Alabama safety, heck even some decent running backs were on the board. Williams would probably have been available in round 5 or later.
If they had taken Butler or Thompson instead of Q, you’re looking at an A+ draft.
Caldwell just went Caldwell.

Seriously though, maybe they know Telvin is done, or something has happened to him to where he can't play anymore and had to reach.

Jacksonville Jaguars: Quincy Williams, LB, Murray State MAYOCK MALFUNCTION, FARMER FAIL, GRIGSON GAFFE, CERRATO SUCKAGE, BAALKE BLOOPER, CHIP TRAGEDY, KING CALAMITY, SASHI SUFFERIN SUCCOTASH Grade
Umm... who!? Quincy Williams was not rated in my top-500 players. I don't feel bad for not knowing him, as the NFL Network analysts were befuddled as well. This is such an awful pick that I'm beginning to think that the Jaguars wrote down the wrong name on their card.
After listening to Dave's explanation, definitely sounds like they thought they needed a LB and he was the best remaining. I dont really believe in a draft philosophy (need vs best available) as long as you use common sense but this feels like the perfect storm of reaching for a need. Tell yourself you need a certain position. A position that doesnt have a lot of talent in this draft. We gave up our next pick in the 4th round to an earlier trade. Spooked ourselves into believing all these other teams were lying in wait to draft him in the 4th and we couldnt risk him not being there in the 5th. Hopefully the kids ends up being better than a lot of the scouts said and proves Dave right.

One thing Dave said in the presser afterwards is how they really wanted to grab a TE and LB in the 3rd or maybe even two TEs. I wonder if they were hoping a guy like Sternberger, Warring, or Knox would fall to our second 3rd round pick. And when Knox got picked right before us, they started scrambling trying to trade back into the 4th. But with only a couple picks in between to do so, they didnt have time to find a trading partner and were then left to draft this guy ahead of where they would have liked. Ironically if he went 10 picks later in the 4th round, the perception would be a lot different. We could write it off as taking a flyer on a guy they really like whereas a 3rd round choice has the expectation of a player who should contribute pretty quickly and develop into full time starter at some point. This guy is being sold more as a special teamer and role player.

I was about to post that!
Wow, well let's see what kind of player he turns out to be. I still feel there was more value on the board but if he's actually any good, kudos to the scouts and the staff.

And if the Falcons almost trading up part for him is true our staff proved to know the board well this draft weekend (regardless of what we would have done with the picks or the players we chose they got it right on when players they coveted were about to be taken).

This is good, John Schneider knows talent in the mid to late rounds so this makes me feel better about the pick
Good stuff in here with the information. So maybe it wasnt so crazy to take him towards the bottom of RD3. Good chance he didn't make it out of RD4 and we don't have a RD4 pick today. Fair enough.

still think they made the mistake of falling in love with a prospect but if he truly was that high up on the board and you knew he was gone in round 4 then i guess its not as bad

Sure, but they made a decision with the info they had.  Let the guy take an NFL snap at least before crucifying the FO.  The truth is no one has access to all the teams boards which means you can't possibly know whether or not several teams at the top of the 4th might've been interested in him.

What's amazing is no one knew anything about him and now we have to listen to uninformed want a be GM's tell us why the pick was so bad and how we wasted it on a player they know nothing about. I for one will go with the front office and the scouts that evaluated him putting in many hours deciding his value.

I agree. I would have gone a different direction with the pick but now I can see a bit more where they are coming from.
And I think Telvin is more related to the situation than they say/we think, Dave looked far from happy talking about the situation the other day and this "need" we have at LB (his words)isn't more of a need compared to what we have at safety. Unless Telvin could be on the way out and I guess we'll find that out in the coming days/weeks.
5'10" 230lbs. Yup, we just drafted the next Sam Mills.

I don't think we are looking at the real story here... Telvin has been slipping, apparently being called out by other players, causing some locker room issues, etc. Is this to possibly replace Telvin? Is this to push Telvin? Is this just a special teamer? A lot of interesting storylines attached to this selection that we may be ignoring and reinforced by a few of Dave's comments.

I think Telvins situation was the first thing everyone thought about when we picked him. Its part of it for sure, just still a weird pick even considering that
The “3rd round” in front of the pick number is throwing people off I think. Had we taken him at the top of the 4th the concern would likely be lessened. This was an end of 3rd compensatory pick. Could just as easily consider this pick a high 4th considering the pick number.

I often look to you for sanity. Talk me off the ledge.

Got to love the kid's attitude and honesty. I am drinking the Kool Aid. I can't wait to see what he brings to the Jags.

Pass the Kool Aid but put something in it; I just don't get this pick yet, given all the other possibilities.

All of which I am almost sure will be gone by the 5th.

I have a feeling that his biggest impact will be on ST which I don't personally place 3rd round grades on. But I guess that's why im not a professional lol.

I'm with you, JoD.
