You are so correct about that. I have direct experience with newspapers abandoning their editing staffs. Print and web media don't really blur the line of sensationslism in the news anymore either. It's sad and in fact dangerous for democracy.

Probably a contributing factor, but as JaggedSioux mentioned above, most of the editing depts have probably been eliminated. The writers themselves don't even appear to be proofreading; or else they are missing them or think that they are correct.
