Quote:To me,it sounded like Gus is safe for next season as well barrring a disaster.

I doubt it.  If they 'clean up' the roster on the defensive side of the ball and they are still awful, I'd bet he's gone in-season and I wouldn't have a problem with it this time.

How can people hold Gus responsible, no coach would have done anything with the team his first 2 years, this is what people need to understand

There was a severe lack of attention to detail. Players being in the wrong position, taking bad angles, lining up in formations that resulted in penalties, etc.

Additionally, Gus even called out the coaching staff at his last press conference by citing various scenarios in the last game in which they should have provided additional protection for the QB and other key coaching strategies that they failed to recognize vs the Texans.  This was experienced throughout the season.

It's definitely way better than the actual season for us Jag fans.

Heck, if we can just bypass the regular season, the NFL would be pretty amazing here in Jax !!!

Its not all Gus's fault, its ridiculous to blame the first two seasons plus the collapse of the defense solely on him. There was severe issues talent wise, we simply did not have the personnel to run the scheme.

Dave was talking about the 1st two seasons (as far as not blaming Gus for them). As many have said, the talent level of this team was atrocious for the first two years, and this year is probably comparable to what most coaches get their first year on the job.

My guess is him and Gus already discussed the changes on the defensive front and will come out later this week on who's staying/going.
Nothing is Gus fault. He's a great coach.
Yep, I see everybody saying that.

Man I can't wait for FA to get here. Dave gonna unload the bank at people.

Perhaps, perhaps not, but Dave was correct in saying the team over-achieved the first year and probably the second as well. The first year our team STUNK!

This off season may be one for the ages! I'm looking as forward to this as the regular season.

Sad.......but still
Quote:Interesting about Mingo. Wonder if he kicks the tires again with new people coming into Cleveland. Watch Dave sign Mack and Gipson and trade for Mingo lol.

And hire Pettine as DC.

So what were they this year that they only won one more game? Untalented? Talented but under-performing?

I think the message to Gus is that the first two years were about gutting a roster and rebuilding.  Clearly, he's also sending a message to Gus that year 3 is on him.  That's a shot across the bow putting Gus on notice.

No, just bad. I was only speaking on the first two years were I agreed with what Dave said. I'm not proclaiming Gus a great coach by any means, but the truth is what it is regarding the first year for sure and possibly the second.
Quote:He's gotta know ball park what our cap space situation is yet he balked at the question regarding it.  His response was "I'll have to get back to you on that."

Do other teams not have that information already?  The only reason I could see him balking at it is if it's not known throughout the league at this time.
If the intention is to unload some players that currently count on the cap for next year, it's not that difficult to understand why he wasn't willing to be specific.  The cap situation is a good one, and with a few additional cuts, even better.  The team reportedly has more than $40 million in space right now.  With a couple of cuts that most are expecting, that number could bump up over $50 million.  Caldwell knows exactly what their cap situation is today, but by balking at responding to the question, he's pretty much telling you that number is going to change as they cut some players and probably give extensions to others they feel are worth retaining.
Has it been mentioned that Dave hinted at staff changes on the Defense?

Quote:@vitostellino dave says they're disappointed but still had some great stories.

Well as long as they have some great stories, that all that matters.

I think he grabbed that line out of Johnny Manziel's post season press conference.
