clearly
Safe to say that even if Fowler comes back and is everything we hope he'll be, we still desperately need more pass rushers.

Very safe to say
Quote:Either way Fowler is not a reach. He's top five in most draft boards, and he was slated to the Jaguars at #3 in most mock drafts..

If you passed over Williams and Cooper in favor of him... yes that was a reach.  Because you passed up guys with higher grades to reach and satisfy a specific position instead.

And again... "slated" to the Jaguars doesnt mean he was worth the pick... it's just that folks were guessing we would take him.  Not sure why that needs to be repeated, but I guess you just don't understand the difference between draft mocks and player evaluations/values.

Why is it so hard to admit we had a specific need and Caldwell fell in love with Fowler, when the BAP was Williams or Cooper?

Actually, it's not that clear.  Some guys like Mayock said that Fowler and Williams are basically toss-ups.  It was not a universally accepted thing that Fowler was clearly lower ranked than Williams.

I think he is actually rated quite highly by most teams and at least comparable to Williams in terms of talent.  Being the perfect LEO "fit" made this pick a no-brainer to the Jags.

Disclaimer:  I thought Amari Cooper should've been the pick because he was the only player left on the board that I thought had a very good chance of becoming elite.

I disagree. While Williams and Cooper always had higher floors than Fowler, Fowler's ceiling was and honestly STILL is just as high.

Also, an elite level pass rusher tends to elevate a team and directly generate more wins than an elite defensive tackle or WR.

Lastly, the evaluation of Caldwell and the staff was there would be no other opportunity for an elite (or even high) level pass rusher later in the 2015 draft, in the 2016 draft, or in the 2016 free agency. So just based on the scarcity you have to take that chance... that is you trust their evaluations.
I don't see a 2016 UFA pass rusher that I really care for

Also, I don't think the Jags will be picking high enough to take Bosa

Definitely seems to present a problem IMO

Fowler+anyone>what we have now.

I clearly understand the differences between those. What you don't understand is the definition of a reach. Passing over one or two players for your guy does not make your guy a reach. A reach is when you take a player that should not be taken anywhere near that high.

He obviously doesnt understand. You could explain it to him 100 times and he still wouldnt get it. The big boards and the their player rating had nothing to do with who they thought the Jags were going to take. Pirkster things just because he read something on the internet that teams and GMs bigboards were the same as what he read. He has no clue how teams had their boards set up and every analyst, espn, nfl.com etc. had Fowler a top 5 player. He also overrated Williams as most knew he was getting closer to the draft and it showed on draft day where he was selected

^^ Agree.

I'm hoping the Jags really focus on the defense the next couple drafts (although, I'd still be on board with OL picks in mid-late rounds).

Jags defense is not good,, with some "key" parts of it older guys through FA pickups.

With the exception of Packers and Patriots, who have all-time elite QBs, all the best teams have very good defenses (including teams contending for WC playoff spots).

Broncos

Panthers

Bengals

Cardinals

Seahawks

Vikings

Rams

Jets

Steelers

Raiders

(49ers/Ravens - prior to losing their defensive studs past couple years,,, look at those teams now)

It's not a coincidence that those teams are the strength of the league.

You cannot bank on your team's QB turning into Brady/Rodgers/Manning(of old) Elite level talents.

All the other successful teams have good defenses,, even if their QB is good/very good.

Jags really need to keep drafting defense.
At least three different definitions of "reach" in this thread.

I really don't care.

If he shows no sign of being worth a top ten pick next year - then I'll give a flip.

Just wanna see him help the pass rush.
I think Fowler's absence isn't ideal, but could be a blessing in disguise. Injured long ago enough to be ready week 1 and gives him a chance to get stronger. Well rested and dying for a chance to be out there on the field again. And not that it would affect a guy like him, but I think with another first rounder (possibly a DL too) it will take pressure off of him to perform.

That is all I'm hoping for. He's not a savior but definitely can help the pass rush.
He will be awesome next year. He has that killer instinct needed at his position
it bad

It really really bad

He prolly gonna die

Or maybe even worse

Who would have thought a player never injured in college would hurt himself the first day of preseason practice.  Wallbash

Just hope with the long rehab he'll be the player we drafted.

Maybe Sen'Derrick will keep tabs on him.
