Comparing Russell to Winston even though Winston has played 2 preseason games?? Smart.

I thought Winston looked pretty good Monday night. Little sloppy sometimes but that's expected for a rookie.

He looked better week two than his atrocious performance week one as he actually made a few decent throws, but it far from impressive. They clearly schemed to run the ball as much as possible to keep him from having to throw, but he ended up getting spraining his ankle on consecutive sacks forcing their coach to take him out early. He may have earned a passing grade by some only because Dalton looked even worse.

That makes sense. TBs OL also fell apart once Cincy ran something a little less vanilla. He crumbled quick on that second sack, very Gabbert-esque on that play.
Quote:I liked Amari Cooper as a player, but I can see why they passed on him.

There is something to be said for allowing young guys to develop. The team drafted two WRs relatively high in the draft. Both showed promise, and both struggled with injury. While talent is always welcome, there is something to be said about experience. You can make the argument Bortles needed experience at receiver because he already has talent at his disposal.

Secondly, at the time of the draft, there was a gaping need at LEO for this team. Chris Clemons played decently last year and got us 8.5 sacks. Keep in mind, that would not typically lead a dominant defense in sacks, but he led our team. That was at age 33. He is now 34, and he can't be expected to duplicate that, especially since he has missed most of camp.

On a tertiary level, you could argue that Leonard Williams and Fowler were better overall players than Cooper. Not knocking Amari Cooper at all by saying it's possible those two guys were higher on the Jaguars board than Cooper.

Can't lie, would love to see this offense with Amari. Receivers would be set for years to come.
Quote:Interesting thing is, we don't know what it would have been like even with Fowler.

That's why I was disappointed we didn't do more in the offseason.

Now with our top two LEOs, one is on IR and the other AWOL.

And, help is not on the way.

If our sack totals drop, we must still have pressure.  Somehow, some way.
I think if there is one positive to come out of this preseason, is that the secondary, specifically CB, is a strength.

I saw Steelers fans grousing that the Jaguars' DBs were playing like Seattle's.

OBJ and Cruz were complaining about the Jaguars secondary "gunning" for Beckham.

But what else would you have done for the defense?

Yet some people say our DBs are bad bc Bryant scored that one TD.

I agree, I think our secondary looks very good

I don't think House will be beat like that regularly.

IIRC, he kind of lost his footing and stumbled and Bryant got behind him?
Quote: Dalton looked even worse.
I've never been one to prop Dalton up on the edge of greatness...

But he's usually pretty solid until POST season.

He looked BAD. And Tampa's D wasn't anything great.

Pitt is gonna run away with that division.

I thought there could be 3 playoff teams from there... but I dunno.. the AFC may be more of a crapshoot this year with second tier teams getting better and top tier teams getting older at QB and such.
Cincy's window appear to be closing. You can only be 'good enough' for so long. Ohio will be Ohio, even with the Bron.

Their window is closing with a top 10 young running back, a top 10 young WR and a good defense?

I agree they are right now "just good enough" but I wouldn't say their window is closing.
1 RB, 1WR (turnover catalyst), a lackluster QB, withering lines, no progress yearly, one and done, 4 years and counting, it crumbles eventually.
Quote:Aside from those plays by Leonard Williams, the Jets have looked like trash this Preseason. I now have them as the 3rd worst team in the league ahead of only the Bucs and Browns.

I respect your opinion, but it doesn't make sense to grade teams based on their preseason games. Remember that 0-16 Lions were 4-0 in preseason. I watch preseason games because I love football, but they don't change my opinion about quality of teams. That's what regular season is for.

Jets have a new coaching staff and they are trying out some things (they also had known problems with Geno and that LB), just like other teams. As I said I expect them to have a top 10 draft pick next year because they don't have a good QB, but overall their roster is not as bad as you think they looked in first two preseason games (I've only watched some highlights, so can't really say anything about that). We'll see how they will play in 3rd game, which is clearly the most important for all teams.
Quote:I respect your opinion, but it doesn't make sense to grade teams based on their preseason games.
It kind of does. It's just more difficult and requires actually watching the games with a good understanding of what's going on within those teams, which most people don't bother doing. What absolutely doesn't make any sense is grading teams based on the results of those preseason games.

Exactly. Besides, I ranked all the teams prior to the Preseason, and am watching the first half of all Preseason games closely merely to help me skew my rankings. So far the biggest change I've made due to the preseason is with respect to the 49ers being better than I thought and the Rams being worse. I had that division, for instance... 1. Seahawks 2. Rams 3. Cards 4. 49ers ...and now I have them 1. Seahawks 2. Cards 3. 49ers 4. Rams. I'm also ready to swap the Cowboys and Eagles. I had the Cowboys #1, but given how amazingly well the Eagles have performed along with the Cowboys losing their best CB, I'm compelled to put the Eagles on top of that division. My big questions are just how high should I rank the Eagles, and should the Packers still be my #1 overall team even after losing Jordy.

Mmmm...

Suppose it might be more accurate to say Dalton's window is closing.
