Interesting thread...

I don't know anyone with AS, other than JW.

But there's this show that was on nbc called Parenthood... one character was diagnosed as having AS, and I thought they did a good job of depicting the thought process of the condition. It gave me some insight on how you think, JW.

I try to empathize with you based on that. Though I'm sure sometimes I get snarky...

The show Boston Legal also had a character depicted with AS who did a phenomenal job of depicting one with AS...I thought the actor should have won an award for his performance
Quote:I don't get it. Many board members say they like me, but make me feel hated. Starting a thread about everything related to trades for all 32 teams should not cause anyone to pick on me. All I want to do is talk and read comments about football and some posters pick on me for starting a thread. Nobody else ever gets treated that way just because other posters hate the thread idea. Four years ago posters picked on me for being a cat lover. Nobody else is treated like that just because he or she loves cats. And while everybody is OK with a few other members liking multiple teams, the same posters pick on me for being a fan of more than one team - even after I clearly explained my reasoning  multiple times.

Why should I have to put up with this crap when the same people who pick on me say they like me? Why not treat me like you would treat any other cat lover and football fan? In those two ways, I am normal. I also know weird does not mean bad or stupid and being disabled does not make me a bad person or idiot. I have done nothing here to warrant the disrespect many board members give me. In the end, I am no weirder than any of you, just a regular cat lover and football fan who happens to have a different set of medical conditions.

I will not stop asking this until I get some detailed explanations, so don't think you can make it go away. If you think you are just having fun with me, explain why you think it is fun to make me mad on purpose.

I just found this thread, and I haven't read all 7 pages, but I would like to say, that I like you fine, because I (think I) understand you.   I remember when you explained your Asperger's.   I understand that your Asperger's makes you take things very literally and that you often don't understand some types of humor.   As a result, when you take offense at something I said, or when you are disagreeable with me, it doesn't bother me at all.  People just need to be a little more patient at times and not take offense at you.

I grew up feeling a little different from other people at times, and I think it gave me a little more empathy towards other people who feel the same way.

You are referring to idioms. That is something I learned about in elementary school. I also read a book about them. But I will never be able to figure out why people say, "Knock on wood." Until someone tells me its meaning, I will always think of the literal definition and disregard it.

There are a lot of idioms out there in the world today. I see them nearly every day.

So you are saying that you don't understand any of them and they make no sense to you?
Does having AS require you to respond to every post in a condescending manner?

I believe that could be a form of Asperger's Super Syndrome.

I totally understand these:

Raining cats and dogs

Woke up on the wrong side of the bed

Turn the lights out

The cat is out of the bag

Feeling blue

Under the weather

Kick off (outside of football)

Life threw a curveball? Something like that.

I need explanations for:

Tickle me ivory

Knock on wood

Tongue in cheek

Having AS causes me to not always recognize the negativity in a word, phrase, or sentence. For example, once I asked a person whose pets just died when it became "obviously sick." She was mad about that and left the room.

That's interesting. It's almost like you've taken truth serum. You probably didn't understand why that upset her?

Correct. I had no idea "obviously sick" could be interpreted as judging the owner of the now-dead dog.

If these are diagnostic of AS, then, I must suffer too because I have no idea what "tickle me ivory" means.  I also once commented to a friend's mom (a middle aged lady at the time) that she'd dyed her hair which seemed perfectly obvious, but which I quickly learned can be offensive to women of a certain age.  The first time I heard the phrase "six on one hand, half a dozen on the other", I was utterly flummoxed.  Another example, when somebody says they'll call me back in "a couple of minutes", I'm nearly always surprised when they take 5 or 10.

I guess the point is, I don't believe I have AS, I just think learning non-literal phrases and non sequitur expressions takes experience and doesn't come naturally for most people.

Well, it looks like you are actually learning that not everything you read should be taken literally since you say you do understand several of those idioms. There had to be a time that you did NOT understand them, but now, you have learned to not take them literally, but still understand what they all mean.

So there is hope after all for you to learn even more in this manner.

Did more then 1 pet die? Your post mentions "pets". but you only mention 1 dog passing away.

Not all pets become "obviously sick" before they die. Some do, some don't. It depends.

Maybe she left the room because she had to go to the bathroom.

It is one thing to understand not all words and phrases should be interpreted literally, but that does not automatically allow me to recognize sarcasm or a joke every time I see it.

Imagine being deaf. You know music is playing by feeling vibrations, but have no idea what kind of song it is. Somebody would have to give you that information. AS is like that. It is why I asked people to use what I call the sarcasm emoticon (the upside down smiley) when they don't mean what they say. But for idioms, it is just a matter of not knowing what they mean. I know you don't literally knock on wood. But because you don't, I can't figure out why you say, "Knock on wood." Sarcasm, on the other hand, is something I can't recognize without that emoticon.

Actually, if there is wood around, you are supposed to literally knock on it. If not, you just knock on something close to it that's nearby.

At least that's always what we did when we used that phrase, meant to keep bad luck away or keep your good luck going.

Could be different for others though.

This might actually be one of the only literal idioms, or one of the few anyway.

So it is a superstition thing.

Yes.

It didn't really take a post on the message board for you to figure that out.

You can google the things you don't understand and read what they mean very easily.

I still have some questions when it comes to JW and her AS. I understand that AS affects social and mental processes in the brain, but shouldn't someone with AS at least be able to understand basic social comments and interactions, and what the difference is between a polite, and impolite action is? Maybe JW really does have AS, but AS is only a small part of a much bigger problem for her. Supposedly Putin has AS, but from what I've seen, he appears to behave and talk pretty normally for a world leader, and there appears to be nothing out of the ordinary about him from a social perspective. He is eccentric at times, but nothing crazy.

I remember reading a post of JW's from last year where she said that she didn't drink: alcohol, soda, water, or juice. If that's really true, then how can she even be alive right now lol? You're telling me that a 38 year old woman can't tell the difference between those four things just by using her basic human senses of taste, sight, and smell? AS or no AS, common sense and the five basic senses are universal to every person. Either JW is actually normal and is just trolling us all for her own entertainment, or there's more to this story than just autism. I mean look at this thread alone... she started this thread out of resentment for the way that other people had been treating her on here. Wouldn't someone with her condition not even care or notice what other people said about her in the first place?
