Quote:To be determined. I remember trav stating he wanted a proven guy. I don't think I would say Jim is proven. Solid? Shouldn't the #1 job in the country be more then solid? I don't know, I'm just asking.

You're not going to pry a HC from the SEC away from their respective team to join another team in the SEC generally. It's a lateral move, unless the candidate is at Vandy.. I think anyone who genuinely believed the Gators A. Would make a run at Freeze or B. that even if Florida DID pursue Freeze that there was even a remote chance he would accept the offer. Doesn't have anything to do with Florida not being a top coaching job, it is. It just doesn't make sense. Same with NFL coaches. Why would you leave the NFL and step down into the college ranks when you're doing well in the NFL? You wouldn't. McElwain is a very solid hire because he's the best candidate so far that actually would make sense for Florida to target.
I called his name a month ago when nobody knew him.

First, it's a perfect hire. He took Fresno St. out of the hole and got noticed by Saban who hired him as OC when his offense was dismal. He took his offense to the championship and walked into a lousy Colorado State job then turned that program into this 9-1 season.

Second, his contract buyout is negotiable. I know the media reports it would cost $7 million but that's not true.

Third, you're not going to get a guy like Bob Stoops who has it made where he's at. Why would he want to take over a down program when he's sitting on one of the best in the country now. I know all the Gator faithful thinks the UF job is so much more than what it is but nationally it's just equal to programs like Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio State, USC, et. al.

Fourth, the best candidate is one who is moving up in stature with proven abilities. If he's run a good, clean program at Colorado St then he would be a good candidate, much like Urban was from Utah.

Agree with everything you just said. Well put
I think he'd be stupid to leave.

1) He is a western/rocky mountain guy.  Grew up in Montana.  Played college at Eastern Washington.  Spent his first 10+ years coaching as an assistant at E. Washington and then Montana St.  Western guy.

2) Thought I read he is making $1.5M base with additional bonuses on top and I'm sure if Florida was interested he could leverage that into more money from CSU.  So basically he'll never have to worry about money for the rest of his life.

3) Ft Collins isnt the most amazing town(it isnt Austin or Athens) but its a nice college town (Gainesville isnt better).  And its literally right up against the mountains.  You could stand on the top row of their football stadium, throw a rock, and hit the base of the rocky mountains.  Plenty of great places to live up in the mountains where he is.  If he doesnt want to be in Ft Collins proper, there are nice places to live just south of there in Longmont and Loveland.  An hour from Boulder.  Just over an hour from Denver.  So there is plenty to do.

4) He is building a good program that is pointing up.  Won 10 games this year.  Was in the running for that automatic bowl spot for the midmajors.  After winning 10 games, he'll have no pressure for at least 5 seasons.  If he can continue to build the program and turn them into a consistent 9-11 win team, they'll name the stadium after him.

His life has got to be amazing right now.  Tons of money.  Cool area.  Building a good program.  No pressure.

Florida, however, is a pressure cooker.  Dont win 10 games a year and the natives will be out with pitchforks.  Tons of pressure.  Hotter than hell in the summer.  Sure they'll pay a lot more but its not like money is an issue where he is now.  As one who values work/life balance, I think he'd be crazy to leave.

Quote:The #1 job in the country should be able to pay like it right?  And you would be moving to Florida?  And no income tax?  It just seems like the #1 job in the country with all those other added benefits should have people lining up for the job and I'm talking about the cream of the crop.  Am I wrong?

lol, Do you know how many coaches would be lining up to put their name in the FL HC hat if this was true??

One interesting name I have heard someone mention is Jim McElwain, current head coach at Colorado State and former OC at Alabama. He took over a program on the downturn two years ago and now has them in the top 25. Was the OC for two national title teams and one of the top recruiters. Might not move the needle much but has a good resume.

You do realize that most football head coach types are psychotically competitive, right? I suspect he wants to test himself against the best, and right now that's the SEC. He's not going to have a shot at a national title at Colorado State.

And what's that - Ft. Collins isn't Austin or Athens? Athens? Georgia or Greece?

"As one who values work/life balance" Are you referring to yourself? I assume so, because no head coach cares about balance. They are obsessed with football and coaching. I doubt some coaches know their kid's names.

So, if the money is right, plus the car, the house payments, and insurance, and the buy-out, I assume McElwain is on his way to the big city of Gainesville.

Why would you brag for just repeating a name someone else threw out there?

None of your points are really valid.  He's at Colorado State...it will never be a national power.  If you're a coach that wants to win national titles (like when he was at Bama) you are going to take a job with a team that can get you there.  With Florida, there is that possibility.
I hope he's a people person and opens up his practices to the public and speaks to the media.   This entire Muschamp secrecy (or lack or communication) era really sucked.

I started looking at his record with CSU.  While I wasn't impressed with the loss to Air Force last week, I looked a little further back and he did pull CSU out of the trash after the Steve Fairchild coaching era.  Not sure how he's getting recruits to CSU but if he was part of the Saban family tree, I can only imagine it all starts with cash.  I just hope he knows the direction to Miami Northwestern HS, Booker T Washington HS, Miami Central, Belle Glade, Apopka, Armwood, etc  ......

Quote:He's pretty proven no ? He's very familiar with the conference.

OC for Alabama and head coach for Colorado State who went 22-16 under him. You call that proven as a head coach? Like I said, maybe he will become an amazing coach, but this just doesn't seem like a big hire for the number 1 job in the country.

It isn't a lateral move if uf is the best job in the country. That doesn't even make sense.

I never thought they would pry a head coach from the NFL. Chip Kelly is a pipe dream that some gator fans are holding out hope for.

4-8, 8-6, 10-2. This after taking over a program with records of 3-9, 3-9, 3-9 the previous three seasons. Pretty proven coach and head coach, and resume.

State income tax is what I should have said.

Fair enough. Time will tell.

Have you looked at his progression as a head coach at Colorado State?

Did you see the turn around at Alabama for the offense while he was there?

Fresno State?

He is an up and comer. Hopefully for gators sake he is more Urban then Muschamp.

I hope he turns out to be pretty decent.  It's much more fun when the rivalry is competitive.  1 vs 2 or along those lines is much more exciting.
