Quote:I think the problem was more on the coaching side of things instead of the talent acquisition.
TC needs to fix the coaching side of things, otherwise I believe his talents will be grossly misguided and mismanaged too...
I agree I wanted Coughlin coaching. Why not fire Caldwell? Im telling you, Coughlin is going to be GM this year. Caldwell, in name is GM, but kinda got demoted, but got extended. They like him, but they need results. Coughlin is going to get this thing turned around.
Quote:I dont think people realize what this hire really means. Its already being reported Coughlin has final say.
I know, but if that is the case, what does Caldwell do and why is he still here, if Coughlin is essentially doing the job of the G.M.?
Quote:Dave will do all the GM legwork...making calls, talking to coaches and scouts, scouting and TC will give the okays
Seems legit
It seems like a waste. Why hire two people to do the work of one person?
Quote:It seems wrong because it is wrong. Popcorn1216 is misinterpreting this. Dave will still be the GM and do 99% of the GM stuff. Doug will still be coach and do 99% of coach things. Tom will just monitor things, give advice, and in ultra-rare cases over-ride a decision. And be there for Shad when Shad needs an independent football judgement.
Let's say Jags go 9-7 next three years. In 2017 we would be fairly pleased. In 2018 and 2019 there would be questions raised as to why we can't become elite. Is it coaching? Is it personnel? Is it a combination? That's when you need Tom Coughlin.
No. If we miss the playoffs for the next 3 years, it just means that Coughlin is now part of the problem as well.

If I told you next season we went 8-8 and missed the playoffs by one game in December, would you take that? Seems like a good building block. Lets get the team turned in thee right direction with a good philosophy that installs a winning culture. Jags have been used to losing. We need to change the atmosphere.
Too many bosses in the workplace....
Well after hearing all opinions it seems like ole Tom is going to be a Mentor. He will Mentor Dave if he thinks Dave is screwing up. Likewise he will mentor the coach if needed. Mentor is defined as an experienced and trusted advisor.
So both GM and head coach will be doing their jobs with a old bird looking over their shoulder. What could possibly go wrong?
These NFL teams have so much cash they cannot wait to spend it creating jobs. There is one draft a year, and not too many other acquisitions so bringing on Coughlin to approve all personnel, after Dave finds the personnel, is a Cluster and a ridiculous use of Coughlin's expertise.
We got one man too old and one man too inexperienced, so hey let's just combine the two guys doing what any team hires a GM to do.
It's not my money, so whatever Khan thinks. But it seems like a lot of bosses who can blame each other when things go south.

Hes going to have the final say, sure, he will mentor Caldwell but Coughlin is your new GM.
Quote:lol... No he's not.
Yes, he is. Read the presser from Khan, read the information that is being presented to you. Marrone and Coughlin will report to Tom Coughlin and Coughlin will head the football operations of the team. If you think he wont have the final say, your living on Mars.

You really think, or even want a 70 year old Coughlin logging hundreds and hundreds of hours traveling to see draft prospects, scouting players for the draft and FA. You really think Coughlin is going to be breaking down game film for draft prospects? Do you have any clue how many hours goes into scouting all of these players? Caldwell and crew has been doing work on this year's draft class, since at least 1 1/2 years ago.
You really think Caldwell is going to do all this work and present it to Coughlin, then let Coughlin just blindly pick who he wants? No chance.
I'm curious to hear how this set up will work. I find it hard to believe Caldwell would happily be demoted, stripped of his power, and stay on as GM "in name only."
Interested to hear the presser.

I think Caldwell still has the exact same powers he had except now Khan has eyes and ears in the building at all times. That's how I see his job: to assess the organization and the people in it and report to Khan in an honest and complete manner.

I think there's still the same amount of bosses. Shad Khan has fired himself and hired TC to do what he realizes he doesn't have the time or expertise to do, and that is, figure out what the hell is going on around here.
Quote:Really? I dont think so, the signs are on the wall.
In your words, show me some proof.
Caldwell got neutered and deservingly so. He had four years to get this right and failed; now he has someone over his head stamping his questionable moves.

I'm not sure I'd go that far. It could be that Khan didn't really replace or demote Caldwell. Khan replaced himself with a surrogate- Coughlin. Coughlin takes some of Khan's duties. Caldwell is still in the same position. I'm just speculating, of course, but that's what makes the most sense to me.
