I didn't watch the game but I think you have to make the switch. You're coming home against a team without some of its better defensive players on an already suspect defense. Your offense is struggling. You have a guy who is learning and waiting and very talented. And honestly I don't know what hes learning. I hope its not bad habits. But yeah the O Line is bad and Bortles will get hit but he's used to that. Part of what he brings to the table is pocket poise to avoid the hit and great measurables in case he receives it,
I was a fan of sitting, but I just think you have to change it at this point.
If Bortles can't deal with adversity he shouldn't have been drafted in the first place.
You will get hit at the quarterback position regardless of how good or bad your line is. The true test of mental strength for Bortles will be how he responds to being hit often.
Even better, how he responds to not having so much time in the pocket.
Quote:Or maybe the line is still bad. 10 sacks is unheard of even with Gabbert.
Or maybe the line is bad and the QB is putrid...
Insert a good, competent QB and your offense would look better - despite most of the deficiencies.
Based off what we have seen by Bortles, there is no reason to suggest we would emulate the same crap spewed on the field - given his command of the line, knowledge to audible to the right play, etc...
Quote:He really doesn't want the attention a QB controversy would garner
so the attention of blowing a 17-0 lead and gettin spanked 41-10 by a backup QB is better? if that's how he really feels.....he needs to step down
RG3 got hurt running out of bounds. Injuries happen. Not having a great O-line will not fully protect Bortles from injuries. He may not "fully grasp" the playbook yet, but his talent alone puts him at least on par with Henne knowing the whole book. Seriously, just play the kid. Your fans don't deserve it and I think youre going to have one unhappy owner pretty soon. No one likes the be embarrassed, especially the guy running the whole show. If Bortles sucks, he sucks, at least we can go back to the drawing board. We could have a good hand in this card game but we are keeping our Ace in our back pocket and trying to bluff with Henne.
Quote:Keyword there is part. Other quarterbacks are able to take as much time as he did to look for an open receiver because they have better offensive lines.
My dad once told me, "A quarterback is only as good as his offensive line," adding even Brett Favre would suck with linemen like ours.
a good quarterback makes those around him better and knows how to climb a pocket.
We need to start running I formation and let Toby pound it through. This zone crap is not working.
Quote:What happens if Henne goes down?
Start Morris in place of Bortles?
Come on FBT, this is a physical sport... Players will get hurt - injuries are inevitable.
What's your take on the injury to Hurns because of the TO?
Stephen Morris is on the practice squad. Blake Bortles is #2 on the depth chart. When people talked about redshirting Bortles they meant he will not start any games this season unless Chad Henne gets hurt and can't play.
Yes, injuries are part of the game, but what if Bortles started today and tore his ACL on one of the 10 sacks?

Then he does...
That's exactly my point, whether he starts today or the first game of the next season.
A torn ACL is a torn ACL JaguarsWoman.
My point to FBT was that we can't "shield" him in the fear of him possibly getting injured - because statistically, that WILL happen more times than it won't.

I hope our coaches realize this. Its not going to work with these players.
The receivers don't get open, the oline stinks. Say what you want about whether or not its the oline or Henne to blame for all the sacks, but you can't escape the fact that this line can't run block for squat and that's not good for a rookie qb. We all have confidence in Bortles but is it really the best thing for him to be put in this situation?
Quote:If you want to give up on that after two games, go ahead. I won't. I expect this OL to be playing much better by mid-October.
You expect them to... Yeah, I expect Henne to get better too. But what am I basing my expectations on? What are you basig your expectations on?
I hope you're expectations come to fruition. I really do.
But in the mean-time, I think BB5 has had enough time to see how the big boys play. Now it's time for us to figure out if he's our franchise QB or not.
Will they start him? Who knows. They are going to start him when they feel he's ready. Well, at this point I'm not sure the OC is ready to be in the NFL, but he's there, making the calls...
Quote:I will have to rewatch the game but I really came away thinking that he rarely had time to even look at a second receiver. Half the time there was a DL in his face when he got to the back of his drop.
^^ This. But if you've been sacked a few times and knocked down, the response ought to be GET RID OF THE BALL FAST.

That "zone crap" is what we have been doing for years with Fred Taylor and MJD with many different offensive linemen, several offensive coordinators and line coaches, and most or all head coaches. But we have always been better running than passing with the ZBS since Jimmy Smith retired. So it must be a case of not having talented players at all five positions.

At some point you need to put something out there that is at least watchable.
There is no way Bortles who is 10x more athletic than Henne gets sacked 10 times playing from the gun. Some quick slants for 8-10 yards and a few completions at 15-20 yards and that rush would have backed off considerably.

No it isnt. We were not a zone stretch team. The days of FT and MJD were power O out of I form.

Robert Griffin has something to say about torn knee ligaments. So does Mark Brunell. Many players are not as good anymore after having reconstructive surgeries.
If you're going to commit to the running game with Gerhart then put a full back in front of him and pound away. You will wear down the defense eventually and save your QB from getting hammered every series.

Toby is not a pounder.
