I don't think the coaches are wrong for keeping him on the sideline. I think Bortles is better, and they probably to also.

They're playing it safe, which is fair IMO. Even if it's annoying, it's still a win/win because A.) Bortles is great B.) It's all a matter of when.

I don't think Bortles playing will set him pack. Players regressing or peaking from playing in game is a very overused argument that only holds wait because of what happened with Gabbert.

The way Bortles ducks the rush and fires to Hurns halfway through this video was so impressive

Henne will end up starting at it's just sad.

B. I agree 100% with everything you said.

It's not the first time. It won't be the last. Appreciate the honesty (even if it got me right in the feels).
The din to start Bortles is reaching epic levels.

Put aside what the fans want to do for the moment.

Supposedly impartial observers are increasingly urging the Jaguars to start Bortles.

On ESPN's sportscenter last night (and you may be able to see this clip this morning), former Dallas Cowboys SS and 3 time Super Bowl champion Darren Woodson was arguing for Bortles to start soon, if not opening day.  In his segment, he showed how quickly Bortles got rid of the ball, even on longer passes, holding the ball no longer than 2.73 seconds on any of the four passes.

Of course, Prisco has been pushing for him to start from the beginning.

Chad Henne has a ceiling -- and you know what it is. The Jaguars have no idea what it is for Blake Bortles. That's one of the reasons he should start opening day. Another reason is what happened late in the first half of the Jaguars-Lions game. Bortles took over on his own 5 and drove the Jaguars to a field goal on the final play of the half in the two-minute offense. Three passes on that drive showed why he should play. He hit Allen Hurns for 28 yards down the right sideline, showing off his touch and arm. Then he hit Marcedes Lewis in the seam for 30 yards to escape a second-and-25. But the most impressive play of that drive was when he stepped up through a messy pocket and hit Hurns for 13 yards. He later threw a touchdown pass to Hurns when he checked to single coverage on the left side. Henne was 9-of-14 for 70 yards, but he checked down a bunch. I have to think the Jaguars are revisiting their decision to not start Bortles. If they aren't, they should be.

I see no reason Henne should be out there week one as starter.

Quote:Now why trash on this guy who only said good things about our team, and from his statement has watched more of Bortles than yourself. I'm sure it's just a kneejerk reaction on your part from all the past bashing we have received. So if you feel the need to bash me too don't waste your time will not affect me at all because above all I love the Jags.

Did you read his first post?
If Henne is absolutely the starter week 1 per Bradley, why give Bottles reps with the ones versus Detroit?

If this decision is set in stone then wouldn't it behoove Bradley to give Henne as many reps as possible, for instance, a chance to do the 2 min drill against Detroit's starters?

If Bottles starts the 4th preseason game because Henne is the week 1 QB and Bottles gets hurt....
Bortles footwork look good they just showed some highlights of it on espn..Dont know why people try and make a big deal out of that? Footwork even if sloppy isnt hard to correct.. And that isnt the primary function of a QB. THROWING the ball is! And his throws are beautiful!

It is. I just dont get it.

Me either. I don't know what more he would have to do in order to show that he's ready and capable of handling himself. He's not Gabbert, you don't have to baby him.
This just in:

Henne approaches coaching staff to declare Bortles is ready and resign as the starter, stating "its whats best for the team".

(a thing of fiction, but if only.)

Compare and contrast our coaching staff with Cleveland's.  It's nice to see how decisive they are.  Henne is the week 1 starter.  Period.  What some fans want isn't what the coaching staff think is best for the team.  The coaching staff appear to being looking at the long view, while some fans are looking at short term gratification.

BB5 looks great out there... For a rookie.  But he's still a rookie.  He made 2 throws that should have been picked off.  He made some amazing throws as well.  But he's still in the developmental phase.  He had some throws where his footwork looked fantastic.  He also threw off his back foot a couple times.  He threw some lazers and he threw a couple wobblers.  Overall I thought he looked amazing out there.  The great throws far outnumbered the bad ones.  But there were still some things that I think he needs to work on.

Henne is serviceable.  He clearly doesn't have the abilities Bortles has.  But he's the veteran QB and he's the place holder until the coaches are comfortable.  We all know that Henne isn't the future, but he's our short term present.  It's just how they want to play it.  And to be honest, I think it's the right way to do it.

I've been saying the BB5 will be starting in November.  But after this last performance, I can see them unleashing the future sooner than that.  Let's let the coaches make the call.  They have not made any decisions so far that would warrant any type of critique in regards to their decision making to this point.
How do you let a rookie QB surpass your 9/14 70 yards 2 quarter performance in 2 minutes? Start the kid

How much can a QB really improve as the backup? It's an honest question - I don't know the answer. It just seems that when the season starts, practice reps for the 2nd and 3rd teams become limited with the focus being on the starters. So Bortles is likely to see practice snaps decrease, and unlike the preseason he won't be seeing game action. Essentially, his improvement will come almost wholly from film study and speaking with the coaches? I'm not sure how that can replicate game experience, so if the coaches determine he isn't ready now, why would he be ready after 2 or 3 weeks?

Another thing - if he truly wasn't ready, why would he be the backup QB? He'd be the third QB and inactive so that there was no chance of getting into the game and injuring his "psyche". Either he's ready or he isn't - no in between.

I think the questions you have regarding keeping Henne the starter for a while is based on 1 key word you are missing the point of.

Rookie...  A rookie has alot to learn and can learn.  Give it a few more months, he'll be ready sooner than we all think, I have a feeling.  But as of right now, he's still progressing.

I have a feeling I'm going to start sounding like a broken record here...  But let's not forget that there were a couple throws that were bad decisions and should have been intercepted.  He's still got room for growth that can occur while not starting.
This team his has conditioned fans to strive for mediocrity because we have been terrible for so long, mediocrity would be awesome. These are the same fans afraid of actual being good and these are the fans who agree with starting Henne.

Mediocrity?  Because some fans can see the long view?  I don't think so...  But it's nice to see you have the basics of how to create a straw man in order to knock it down.  That's some advanced debate skills.

Dr. Phil is in the house!

Thanks for that terrific insight. Now go back to the cartoons.

Yeah, Bradley and Caldwell are "afraid of being good". Where do they get this stuff?
