Quote:The Spanish-American war ring a bell?

Mexican-American War?

Operation Urgent Fury?

I imagine Europe would now be called "Germany" if the U.S. didn't step into World War II.  In fact I'm positive of it.

You are probably correct in regards to continental Europe without Russia and the USA, not so the UK which won the battle of Britain.
Quote:You think the middle east would have been better off with a nutty mormon in charge?. America is seen as a bit backwards and behind the times in europe with the death penalty and its very reigious nature. We have moved on from that and are waiting for you guys to catch up, Obama is seen as a better chance for that than the Bush/Romney types.

Noticed the dig at socialism, but the UK probably has the best healthcare in the world so we are quite happy with the socialist model in that regards thanks...

Again, here is an example of the far left putting people into categories.

"Nutty Mormon"?  Really?  Is he supposedly "nutty" just because he is of the Mormon faith?

I wouldn't tout the "best healthcare" bit too much.  I was in the UK and spoke with people there.  One of the things that came up, unsolicited by me was how we had the best healthcare in the world.

Far left? i wouldn't even consider myself left.

yes on the nutty comment, that's exactly how most people think in Europe

Never met anybody who would want the American system. Maybe the very rich?

I think we have a tendency to overemphasize our impact on that war. Russia was far, far more important than we were.

Europe is a bit naive in how badly they rely on the American Economy and Military to prop up their nice little paradises they've built. Don't worry, as the American economy comes to an end and the worlds economy with it you'll be on your own soon enough.

Enjoy all those friendly Muslims in your ghetto's waiting for their time, it's coming soon.

Actually the way the EU is going it will be a superpower in its own right in the future. Luckily I live in Australia then where China props up the economy not the USA then  Smile

Not sure what muslims has to do with anything?

Laughing Half of the EU is already bankrupt, a superpower that's rich! I was assuming you're in England since you proclaimed how great the system over there is, apparently you're just naive all the way around. In 2011 the NHS had to cut 31 billion from their fund and up to 20,000 NHS jobs. Not to mention raise the wait times on "non life threatening care" which is a problem since there's no competition. The beauty of socialized health care, wait until government says you're approved to be seen by a physician.

You want to talk about only the rich benefiting but Australia has the 5th highest cost of living in the world.

He's not naive.  Just pretentious.

Europe does do some things better than us.  We also do plenty better than them.  At least we don't arrest people for singing "Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting"

Ah, yes, the blanket attack on Muslims. A truly marvelous sign of a well reasoned argument. C'mon man, I expect better of you.

It's why I'm a border line Isolationist, done defending the world and propping up their economies while we suffer at home. Close the embassy's, bring the troops homes, build the walls and let the world burn.

In England (which we where discussing at the time) Militant Islamic factions are plentiful in their ghetto's. It's a problem boiling in many parts of Europe. Radical Islam is a real problem, Just look at the riots in France a few weeks ago over the Gaza events.

I agree that radical Islam is a problem. It just struck me as a blanket attack on Islam which is just silly. I apologize if I misunderstood and it wasn't actually a blanket statement.

There's a lot of pretentious people out there, but they're just a very vocal group, while others are much quieter.  The fact is there are plenty of wars we shouldn't have stepped into -- (Obama has gotten us into a few of them), and that has earned us a bit of ire.  Of course someone should have stepped in when human rights are being violated.  And that someone should be a joint-agreement by the United Nations.  Unfortunately, waiting for that to happen can make it too late.

it could have been worded better. I just get a little annoyed and sharp when Europeans snipe at America as all that is wrong with the world.

Fair enough, I can understand that.

I'd agree with MANY Europeans that when we get involved (or any one for that matter) these problems get worse. Picking regimes and attempting to colonize the world (or in modern terms "Free" the world) has been the cause of collapse for every major world power in history.

I'm all for ending ALL foreign aid to EVERYONE.

Well looking at life expectancy every country I have ever lived is higher than the USA. Maybe socialised health care is good because it encourages people to see a doctor earlier and isn't just about profit making? Therefore stops many ailments before they become a major issue.

Not sure why you are so proud of your economy either, because I get paid more and get better conditions than I would in the US in a similar role, and if I did lose my job tomorrow I wouldn't have to worry about whether I can afford to see a doctor, what a terrible way to live...

some people don't mind being slaves to the state, I'd rather die broke and free than live wealthy and dependent on the state.

socialized health care has been a disaster anywhere it's implemented for more than a few generations. it's an economic killer.

You do realise you aren't tied to socialised healhcare... You can go private if you like? Most people don't because the benefits by far outweight the cons.

The poverty you see when you visit the USA is shocking for outsiders from other developed countries. Not sure how that is freedom? and why you think this is the best way. Have you ever left the country?
