Quote:Perhaps, but a show about the first openly gay player to make an opening day roster has much more staying power than a show about the first openly gay player to be drafted and cut. The longer he stays in the league, the longer the show stays on the air.
And if he has an agenda, so what? If he doesn't make the grade, he gets cut. I'm not buying into the theory that Fisher will keep him on the roster due to pressure from the league office. If Sam gets cut and fines result, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong.
Those of us who are not gay have no idea what his life has been like. For all we know, he may be entirely justified in putting his lifestyle on public display just to show anyone who ridiculed or doubted him how wrong they were.
Bill Maher said on his show a few weeks back that there's a gay mafia out there that will punish anyone who goes against their agenda. He was right.
If Sam gets cut, the claws will come out from advocacy groups around the country. I don't think Fisher is going to let that deter him from making decisions that are the best for his team, but you and I both know the clamor that will arise from him being cut will be louder than if a guy drafted in the first round this year was cut.
The thing about your last point is he supposedly lived in the closet until he came out to his team last year. So, anyone who was ridiculing him or doubting him wasn't doing it because of his sexual preference, correct? Setting aside the notion that he was being ridiculed, maybe they were doubting him for completely legitimate football reasons?
Personally, I don't care what he does in his private life. I just think the there was more motivation here than getting ahead of the story when he came out in such a public manner.
No diss to Sam and his lifestyle, I really don't care bout that. But I'm glad we didn't draft him. You think it's a circus now just imagine if the rams want to cut him.

He lived in the closet as far as his football team was concerned, we don't know much about his life before then. Anyway, imagine a life where you can't be yourself, that you feel you must be in a closet. I'm not projecting anything here, just pondering the possibilities behind his motivation.
I'm surprised you even watch Maher, but you and he are correct, there is a gay mafia, just like there is a media-driven mafia behind just about every political or social agenda. But aren't we a part of that just by commenting on it?
My point is that if he has an agenda, so what? He is in a profession in which his destiny is controlled. He could not choose where he works, or for whom. All he can control is his effort and how his story is told. All he has is verbal assurances that he will be given a fair shot, nobody told him before the draft exactly when he would be drafted or how much money he will make, or even assured him he would make anything beyond any guaranteed money provided by his contract. He's grabbing what he can, while he can. It's the American way, no?
Quote:He'll get enough to have a head start in life if he doesn't make it as a pro-football player. Do you really think other 7th rounders wouldn't do this given the opportunity?
I know it might be difficult to believe, but there are people out there who would not sell their soul to Oprah and have cameras follow them around 24-7.
Quote:Seriously, all Michael Sam did was say he was gay. Media and fans made a big deal about it. May as well get paid. Plus with stuff like hard Knox already mandated by league, what's the difference?
And before this thread gets locked, i'll say this. Is he actually good? I saw some highlights recently and he wasn't terrible at all.
Yeah, I bet one of those masterful media puppeteers forged his signature on that TV contract.

Didn't realize he sold his soul. Does Oprah accept that as currency? I could use a few million, if she's in need of more.
Here's the issue: This man is not famous at all for any merit on a football field. Almost nobody would know his name if he were not gay--which I find convenient to the extreme.
Sam's jersey is the second most popular among rookies because he is gay.
He is getting a reality show because he is gay.
For all we know, he may have been drafted because he is gay. He complained, insinuating that he wasn't drafted earlier because he was gay. That's one hell of a slippery slope.
A player ON ANOTHER TEAM voices a negative opinion of his lifestyle, and is sent to REHAB or whatever it's called, for crying out loud.
He has a built in excuse for when he is cut, and based on the evidence here, he'll probably use it. There will be outcry by the homosexual community if he is released. If I'm wrong, I'll gladly eat my crow, but based on what has transpired so far, is it really that far fetched?
Quote:Yeah, I bet one of those masterful media puppeteers forged his signature on that TV contract.
Because the argument is whether he signed the contract or not, huh? You got me on that one.
And tell me why he was offered a contract again? Was it because of the masterful fan puppeteers?

Because he's gay. And because he decided he could make history by coming out just in time for the draft. Pretty smart move.

What didn't happen:
Sam: I'm gay
Media+fanbase: This is unrelated to football.

bigots: We're going to make a huge stink about the acceptance of gays and lack of acceptance for bigotry

Fixed it a bit more for ya.
Boy, so many posters being drama queens. How appropriate.
Hey, FBT - good to see you've agreed to step in for TMD. I don't think he could do better in being overly dramatic and seeing monsters under the bed. I especially like the use of Bill Maher as a source. Yeah, I take my "insight" from a comedian. I'm eagerly awaiting some "Get of my lawn!" posts from you now.
If anyone read the article it mentioned documentary, not reality show. It's going to be about Sams' life off the field not about football. I doubt Oprah's audience cares much about the football aspect, but may find a story about the NFL's first openly gay player compelling.
The Rams' have said they are not disturbed by all this - although I don't doubt they would be glad to do without it. But really, what's the big deal. An NFL player or team dealing with publicity - like that's never happened before.
I thought the stereotype was of gay people being overly emotional. It appears that many of you are instead. Get over it.

pretty much. Be tolerant of my intollerence plz
Quote:Fixed it a bit more for ya.
except what I said was a fact and you are making a generalization
even people who are pro-gay think this is a bad idea for Sam as a player.
Didn't Terrell Owens have a reality show while he was playing football?
Quote:Didn't Terrell Owens have a reality show while he was playing football?
Nobody says he cant have a show. Eric Decker has a stupid show too.
The thing is that it wont help his chances of making the roster. He should focus on what will help his chances.... that is assuming his first priority is being in the NFL. If his first priority is being a gay activist, then ya do a show. But he has said otherwise. His actions are contradicting his words.
Why get into an argument about that then?
I mean... he's not a Jaguar. He's not a distraction to our team. If he's a distraction to the Rams, then I don't really care. I don't see why people are going all "SEE HE DOESN'T JUST CARE ABOUT FOOTBALL!" on this.
Also I doubt there are many players who's FIRST PRIORITY is football. People have things in life they care about far more than a sport. Most people do in fact. (Except College Football fans sometimes)
I can't believe a 6th rounder is getting this much talk? You'd think this guy won a superbowl or something already?

In that sense, why do people care about Johnny Hangover or Teddy Sewagewater? Of course its not Jaguar related but it is kinda football related and a topic on the NFL forum. Take it for what it is, just a discussion.
