Quote:Personally, I'd rather see the Jaguars draft two QBs and hopefully one of them becomes our guy.

Because you couldn't use a pick on Mallett and a later pick on a developmental prospect like Murray??

Why would trading for Mallett mean we only bring in one QB?

Quote:Yes he was.  The Bucs moved on to Vinny Testaverde.  However, I agree with your general proposition that it is better to draft a QB than trade for one.

You find players where you find players, whether that be draft/ FA or trade.

When you limit or pigeon-hole yourself to a strict philosophy, you can miss out on opportunities.

cool story mr bridgewater or bust

In this draft, Bridgewater's far and away the best QB prospect.

trading for Mallett = better opportunity for landing that franchise QB than drafting any of the remaining QB of this draft. My opinion.

You can, but as a general rule, franchise QBs are not going to be found via trade, for myriad reasons.

First, player trades rarely happen in the NFL.

Secondly, QB is such a valuable commodity, it's rare for one that is truly franchise caliber to be available for trade.  Far more often than not, those available for trade are just guys...with the occasional pro bowl caliber player.

A team can improve their QB situation by trading for one.  That is a far different proposition than finding a franchise QB by trading for one.

and didnt you want to trade a 2nd for kirk cousins too? history of trading for backup qbs says no theyre rarely if ever are franchise qbs. imo mettenberger is a better prospect than mallett was, better in almost every aspect of the game. the only thing mallett has is being in the nfl already.
I would love Mettenberger in the later rounds.

I'm not arguing against the above.

I am arguing against being close minded and not exploring/ considering ALL possibilities.

I see Bridgewater as a franchise level QB from this draft. AFter him, its pot luck. I think Ryan Mallett provides a better chance of being that franchise QB than any of the remaining QB draft class. But even he's not a sure thing. In any event, I want the Jags acquiring 2 QB this offseason regardless of the method thats taken. Whether that be drafting 2, trading for 2, drafting one and trading for one, FA for one, draft for one, etc etc.
Lol at Mallet > Bortles......

The Mad Dog stated, in a different thread, that he would like the Jaguars to add a WR this draft. I state the same thing and he grills me for it.

What else is new?

I brought up the idea briefly a few weeks ago, yes. His stock obviously has fallen below where that level comp would be necessary. A 2nd rounder was too probably too much from the get go - I mis-priced him. I'd still consider giving a late rounder for Cousins as one of the QB we brought in as I am not as down on him as some on this board.  But I have never thought that Cousins was a better prospect than Mallett and the 3rd was always the starting place for any Mallett trade. So, yes, I messed up with that price.

I wouldn't mind him as one of our 2 QB added this offseason.

I want to add a WR too. I grilled you for you saying that a WR would be better than Mallett, a potential franchise QB.

You have a real problem with lying.

Ethics & integrity isn't your strongsuit, I'm guessing.

I had forgot that the 3rd rounder was the starting point for Mallett trades last offseason.

Yes, I messed up with the 2nd round price for Cousins.

Quote:Lol at Mallet > Bortles......

I like Bortles probably more than a  lot of the remaining 2014 draft QB after Bridge....

Mallett was a better college QB prospect than Bortles.
