Quote:Have you seen him punt? He was one of the best punters in the NFL last year - as a rookie! That is all that matters, regardless of which round he was drafted in.
Would you still be making the same statement if the Jaguars drafted Bryan Anger in the 1st Round, instead of the 3rd Round?
Quote:Probably 2 first rounders and 2 second rounders.
That's just off the top of my head. I don't see anyone paying it, though.
Related to what you mentioned, there's probably at least a 95 % chance that the Jaguars won't get an offer for Justin Blackmon that reflects his current production and his potential. While Blackmon's off the field history makes him a risky player, unless the Jaguars get a high even reward from another team for Blackmon's services, it makes sense to hold on to him. With the hope that Blackmon realizes that he can't slip up again.
Quote:I wouldn't trade him unless it was for a top 10 pick and I doubt anyone would dot that.
People Blackmon is not someone we dont trade unless we get about 4 first round draft picks. Just think how many times we have missed badly in the first round! Alualu, Gabbert, Harvey, Matt Jones, Leftwich. One of those picks we get in the first round could easily pan out to be another one of these players. Blackmon is a rare extremely talented player, and who only knows how much better he would be with a half way competent QB at the helm. I don't know why we would start from scratch trying to develop a new player. Logic eludes many posters on this board. Even if that new player is good, are we just going to turn around and trade them too? Some posters on this message board are more obsessed with draft picks than they are with the actual talent in-front of them.
Blackmon is here to stay!
It's hilarious that they named Indy as a possible trade partner.
Quote:No it's not. Eugene Monroe and Bryan Anger were vrey good picks. (So what if Anger was picked in the third round; the fact we have him is wonderful.).
Even if it was smart to trade Justin Blackmon, he obviously would be worth a first round pick.
Gene I didn't realize you were a member of the message board

Right? If that doesn't run up the red "manure" flag on that article.... nothing will.

It matters if we could have had him undrafted, or as a late round pick. You can certainly defend the pick to your heart's content, but the bottom line is that selecting Anger in the 3rd round landed us a punter who has been completely mediocre this year. When you look at what we could have had in that position, it's almost painful.
Anger is currently the 8th rated punter in the league.
- Brandon Fields - MIA - Selected in the 7th round of the 2007 draft
- Thomas Morstead - NO - Selected in the 5th round of the 2009 draft
- Johnny Hekker - STL - Undrafted Free Agent 2012
- Sam Martin - DET - Selected in the 5th round of the 2013 draft
- Andy Lee - SF - Selected in the 6th round of the 2004 draft
- Marquette King - OAK - Undrafted Free Agent 2012
- Matt Bosher - ATL - Selected in 6th round of the 2011 draft
- Brian Anger - JAX - Selected in the 3rd round of the 2012 draft
- Brent Kern - DEN - Undrafted Free Agent 2008
- Jeff Locke - MIN - Selected in the 5th round of the 2013 draft
Late rounds or undrafted punters surround Anger, supporting the notion that he was a reach in the 3rd round, and probably could have been had much later. If not, there are 2 guys from that same draft class who are better than him who wound up being rookie free agents. Tough to justify that pick now, just as it was difficult to defend the pick then. Perhaps if the team was as close as they thought they were to turning a corner then it's something that could be justified. Otherwise, you have to admit it was a boneheaded move, and probably was one of the contributing factors in Smith losing his job.

What happens when he messes up again and he gets suspended for a year? Then you look stupid and we could of gotten a top 10 pick.
I don't want to trade Blackmon but if someone offered a top 10 pick it would be tempting, but they wouldn't because they are not that stupid and know if he messes up one time he is gone.
Tim, one additional point from the excellent illustration you provided. Bryan Anger isn't even a kickoff specialist. While Anger still would have been a major reach in the 3rd Round if he was a kickoff specialist, as a non-kickoff specialist it makes the decision by Gene Smith probably his worst non-1st Round draft decision in the 4 seasons Smith was the Jaguars G.M.

I agree with you that the Jaguars very likely won't receive a top 10 pick offer for Justin Blackmon. I have serious doubts the Jaguars will receive a 1st Round pick offer, period, for Blackmon. If that proves to be the case, it makes sense keeping him with the hope that Blackmon learned from his past mistakes.

Let me check my calendar to see if its April 1st because this has got to be a joke right? If you're a GM in the league who needs a break out WR you would be a fool not to try and trade for Blackmon with a top 10 pick! Dave and Gus had a "come to Jesus" meeting with Blackmon and he knows how serious the issue is, its sad how long it took him to get the point. I don't think hes going to jeopardize 1 years salary or his future football career to chase that nonsense anymore.
If that's the reason you think Blackmon should be traded, based on potential troubles down the road with violations then you are completely in the wrong. He is a game changer and having a new QB will only further illuminate his talent.

This team wouldn't turn down a top 10 pick for Blackmon. There are no teams that are going to make such a proposal. Those teams that are so desperate for WR help will be scouring practice squads and the waiver wire looking for someone to fill the need before they'll give up premium picks for another receiver.
No team would offer anything even remotely close to a top 10 pick for the very same reason you mentioned.
This speculation by some former GM is nothing but a guess looking at teams with needs vs. teams that have players they would be willing to trade because they need more draft picks.
This team has identified Blackmon as a part of their rebuilding efforts, so it's a moot point.

If true, then the current front office is incompetent.

See what I mean? Some people just don't get it.
On the Anger thing..... if this guy was booming 70 yard punts and pinning guys inside the 5 on a consistent basis, it would still be a TERRIBLE pick in the 3rd round. The fact that he is mediocre makes the pick that much more painful.
This pick is Genes version of Del Rio beating the Colts in a meaningless game that ended up giving them Andrew Luck. Ironically, the same type of meaningless game that will make us lose Teddy.

They're incompetent because they'd take a top 10 pick in the draft in trade for a player who is one drink or one toke away from a year suspension?
I guess if anyone would be an expert when it comes to incompetence, it's you, but sorry, they'd be incompetent if they didn't take that deal.
Quote:If true, then the current front office is incompetent.
If you were guaranteed a top 10 pick in the upcoming draft for Blackmon, you would be dumb not to take it.
Quote:See what I mean? Some people just don't get it.
What are we not getting here?
No team is going to offer a top 10 pick for Blackmon. That's easy enough to guarantee considering the fact that the teams mentioned as being possible suitors for any trade arrangement won't be picking in the top 10 of the 2014 draft. In reality, any team that IS projected to be picking in the top 10 won't be trading those picks away for a receiver.
Quote:If true, then the current front office is incompetent.
As much potential as Justin Blackmon has, if a team offered the Jaguars a top 10 pick, if I was in the Jaguars position I would cash in my chips. With Blackmon being one strike from a year long suspension, at least for me a top 10 pick would be too good to pass up.
