LOL ... we just gave Lewis $3.75m for this season and you all are making it seem like we left him out high and dry.

Assuming most of you are in the $75k/year salary range, it will take you 31 years to make that amount (assuming a 3% year over year pay increase).

OK ... now that does suck.  I'll make sure to buy him a drink if I see him out in Jax Beach at Hoptingers or the Green Room.

[BLEEP] ---- HIS ANNUAL EARNINGS DROPPED LIKE ENRON STOCK !!
I'm sure he wasn't complaining when he cashed the 250K check. I'm sure he wasn't crying when he said he was only going to be here for mandatory stuff. I guess he understands TC now.
We just signed Seferian-Jenkins and Paul, we're looking around the market still, and there remains a decent chance that we go TE in the first couple of rounds. Something had to give. It sucks for Marcedes and he got a raw deal being cut when he was, but it was kind of predictable. Blocking tight ends don't command the sort of premium that receiving tight ends like Seferian-Jenkins and Paul do. Koyack is a perfectly acceptable blocker at the position. When you've just shelled out good money for 25 and 28-year-old receiving tight ends, it's a good bet that your well paid 33-year-old blocker is not long for the team.

I wish him well wherever the next stop may be. Call me crazy, but somehow he seems like the type of player Belichick would go after.

After taxes and agent cut that's only like 90k. Hard to live on that kind of scratch when you've been living large in LA for the last 15 years.
(03-20-2018, 07:31 PM)J-Mizzal Wrote: [ -> ]So that means we may still draft a TE early

Nope. They pussed out and decided to go Free Agency. He was the last TE we've drafted in the first 2 rounds 12 years ago. ASJ was a terrible signing and that position will be lacking until they actually invest a top 2 round draft pick on a TE .

No one told him to live in that dump LA. That's his choice.

So we're complaining about waiting five days to release Lewis. To my knowledge two TEs were signed elsewhere in that span. Was Lewis in legit competition to land either of those jobs?

It's simply childish to cut Marcedes Lewis cuz they found out he was mad. Just stupid reasoning. Are they any adults in the Jaguars' front office? Nobody will ever accuse the Jaguars of being a classy organization, but this is right up there with announcing David Garrard as the starting quarterback at an official team pep rally and then cutting him a few minutes after the team bus dropped him off at the stadium.

What unprofessional bone-heads... what total WHIMPS exercise a contract option which gets a veteran feeling good, then claim they were sending the player smoke signals that he was going to be cut a'la a flurry of TE acquisitions?

Marcedes had every right to be mad. What Caldwell did to him was vindictive. Passive aggressive behavior. Remember that genius David Caldwell had a chance to cut Marcedes years ago. He brought in Julius Thomas. He should have released Lewis then, if he felt so poorly about him.

In contrast, better NFL franchises know how to treat veteran players. Older Jaguars' fans can recall how Tom Coughlin used to accommodate older players. Who remembers Clyde Simmons waltzing around in a ball cap while the rest of the team struggled through July practices? I think I recall reading Tom continued to appreciate veterans likewise while he was Super Bowl winning head coach of the New York Giants.

It's pretty much a given Marcedes Lewis holds every single Jaguars team record for tight end. Cutting him is totally low class. Odds are very high Caldwell knew his "mistake" was not clearing Marcedes out before he wasted millions and millions on Julius Thomas, an epic free agency bust. He knows Lewis well enough that he would once again rise to the challenge for his position. Caldwell cut him to eliminate a truly competitive warrior.

David Caldwell is turning into Gene Smith. At least he didn't fire the tight ends coach! Tom should fire Caldwell and find a more experienced GM.

Right and i`m sure if they would have cut Lewis at the start of free agency and then Paul and ASJ chose to go else were you would have been all "Well at least they cut Lewis early and gave him a chance to sign else where" and not been upset with the move.

You’re either a member of Lewis’s family or a member of a union for lazy workers. In that system the older, diminishing employees get sweetheart deals, and they’re often the most critical of the decision makers as they cling to their pensions. The NFL, by contrast, is a pure production business. There should be no waltzing around for million-dollar athletes at training camp. They should be rested more to conserve their energy over the season, but once they no longer offer significant contributions they should be moved.

Julius Thomas was a bust but his deal was front loaded to mitigate the risk, and he was brought in to compliment Lewis’s blocking skill set under Bradley, whose offenses didn’t necessarily feature TEs. Bradley subscribed to a coordinator/philosophy of the month club, so one pass specialist paired with a blocking specialist was sufficient. It’s clear now that Caldwell/Coughlin are stocking players for a more TE-oriented offense than in the past. That’s all this move represents.

Don’t feel sorry for Lewis. Once the dust settles, he’ll get paid well again to bobble passes and function as a glorified fullback. He’ll also flash for a game or two to convince a GM that he’s being under utilized or still has enough in the tank to warrant another season.

We have no idea what signing them would be like if Lewis was cut instead Caldwell exercising the option.

The better question would be how much more money could the two free agency tight end signatories have made if Lewis' salary was there to sweeten the kitty?

It's easy to say Caldwell knows what he's doing. The problem is free agents don't. Smart players (smart agents) avoid the 'crowded house'  ploy due to a sense of self-confidence and self-respect.

As you can see by how this is backfiring, Marcedes Lewis is going to be a tough act to follow. The two signatories are going to get a very cold shoulder.
Let's face it, while Marcedes was a good blocker, throwing him a pass was an adventure. He had about the worst hands of any tight end I've ever seen. It was like trying to catch a pass with two ping pong paddles.

For years everyone harping to "Cut the giraffe". Now that it's done folks whining about how it was done.

Exactly.

Could it have been done differently so as to be more "friendly" towards Lewis?  Perhaps, but this is a business.  The Front Office handled it just fine in terms of being good for the team as far as I'm concerned.

Unlike many on this board, I've always liked Marcedes Lewis and am glad that he was here while he was.

Agreed.

I think he was under appreciated here, and there were things outside of his control that negatively impacted his production (though admittedly his 2011 season was horrible).

First off, you don't know why Marcedes Lewis was cut.  There are any number of justifications for the team cutting him.   Maybe they wanted to get younger at the position.  He is 34.  Maybe they wanted to save money.  Paying for a rookie reserve TE is cheaper than paying for a 12 year vet reserve TE.  Perhaps Lewis became expendable with the ASJ signing.  Perhaps they wanted more production at the position.  ASJ had 50 catches last year.  When was the last time Lewis came close to that figure?  Whether Lewis' was angry at the team for ASJ's contract, much less whether his anger played a role in his release, is unknown.  But if he were angered by the contract, if his anger manifest itself the wrong way, you can bet insubordination might have justifiably played a role in his release.

Secondly, I am one of those older Jaguars fans who remembers the first Coughlin era.  I remember an instance when RBs Tavian Banks and another were in an accident on the Main Street Bridge when their car flipped over on the way to a meeting.  They were still fined for being late to the meeting.  There is at least one instance in TCs stay with the Giants where a player (Tiki Barber) left disgruntled over the way he was treated by Coughlin.  I don't say this to impugn TC, but I show these things to illustrate how players being dissatisfied with being treated a certain way by the organization is common, even to those we view as top notch guys in the profession.

As to your closing line, it is patently ridiculous to compare Caldwell to Gene Smith, and even more so to suggest TC fire him for cutting a 34 year old TE.  Lest you forget, it was Caldwell's picks that led the Jaguars to the AFC championship game last year.  You aren't going to find many GMs that have a first three rounds like Caldwell's 2016 draft.  Furthermore, firing Caldwell for cutting a 34 year old TE whose most productive days are long behind him after signing him to a contract extension is every bit as vindictive and childish as you assert Caldwell was.

While I'll always appreciate your in depth analysis and football acumen, especially in regards to Jaguars related history....why do ya'll continue to feed the troll? Report him and move on.

I can take trolls...but if you must troll, dammit be a good troll.  Don't tell me a GM that built a team that just appeared in the AFC championship game needs to be fired for cutting a 34 year old TE that hasn't had more than 25 catches in the last 5 years.  Don't equate a guy who got more legit playmakers in one draft (2016) than Smith got in his entire tenure here, to Smith.
