I wouldn't be upset if the Rep. candidate was Cruz, Trump, or Dr. Ben Carson...

but pleas no Jeb!

Quote:Trump is a wolf in sheep's clothing.  He's as much a conservative as I am a Jags fan (Go Titans).  If he's on the ticket, I am will leave the presidential ballot blank even if it means President Hillary or Bernie.  I refuse to vote for him.

I can't believe I'm saying this but the tack is right people!

Will you be supporting Ted Cruz after he said we should force Apple to backdoor the terrorists phone?

ewww i hadn't seen that comment yet, I hope that's not true. ted is a bit more hardline on the social liberties than I prefer. While it gives me pause I don't see a better option right now. I'm never going to trust a northeastern liberal calling himself a populist.

He didn't ask for a global backdoor, none of the candidates have, yet. But he and Trump did agree that the government should force Apple should crack this terrorists phone.

This is kind of an interesting topic, might deserve its own thread.

Isn't Apple saying if they make that software it could be used on ANY phone right?
They should be able to provide the data. As Rand Paul said this is a specific warrant with beyond probable cause.

If a landlord is presented with a warrant he has to open the door. He cant use the counter argument that the key might get stolen. Even the most ardent libertarian recognizes that this meets the criteria of reasonable search after the due process of establishing probable cause.

Yes. However, that software would have to be released to the public for it to fall into the wrong hands, right? I suppose it could be leaked or recreated. However, couldn't they just patch it out after they retrieved the data?

The FBI should hand the phone over to Apple, let them retrieve the data, then hand the data to the FBI. I think the impression Apple has is that the FBI is asking for a permanent backdoor into future Apple devices, which I agree is wrong.

This is asking KB homes to open up a house that they built 5 years ago.

If all they are asking for is to have this particular phone opened, then your analogy is fine. However, my understanding is that the government is asking for software to open EVERY phone.

Quote:I really think Donald Trump will win even if he has to run as an independent.  People are tired of both parties lies and tricks.
Not a chance. If he runs as an independent, he's handing the election to the Democrat.

Which might have been his endgame all along. Who knows?

Quote:"Unelectable?"

I understand the word implication here, but I don't see why you feel this way. Cruz will do just fine, and is without question the best candidate over Trump, Hillary and Bernie.
I wouldn't say "without question", and I do think he'd lose to either Democrat because of his pandering to some demographics and ignoring of others. I do know there are more and more libertarians like me out there who are seeing the real cost and implications of what Sanders wants to do and are suddenly realizing that despite Cruz's far right leanings on social and foreign policy issues, his economic proposal is the best that's left out there.

Bingo. The government doesn't want the data. They want a bit of code they can "borrow" then use to crack every phone in the country on demand, warrant or "national security reasons". If Apple were to give them something like that, Apple would have to almost immediately build and launch a massive update to iOS to patch it. The bigger issue is that if Apple allows the precedent to be set, patches wouldn't matter. All any government agency, maybe even individual, would have to do is produce a subpoena, and Apple would have no ability to refuse.
