Quote:At some point, we need to become an average 8-8 team.

This is year 3 of this current regimes rebuild. If things are going according to plan, that should happen this year.

If that happens, winning a game like the panthers one should happen. If we lose games like this all year long, we are staring at 3-13 yet again and hopefully Bradley gets canned.

Yeah, there is always the chance that the panthers turn out much better than we're thinking, but with their best defensive player gone and their best receiver gone and Cam continuing to show his immaturity (remember him running down a DB that intercepted him in practice to start a fight?) it's hard to see it being the case that they're really a quality team this year and not the team they were last year that got into the playoffs with a losing record because "someone had to" and were lucky enough to face a team starting a third team QB in the playoffs.

At some point the Jaguars have to start taking care of other middle of the pack teams at home, and I just can't see the panthers as being better than middle of the pack right now. If the Jaguars can't win games like this one regularly it really says something about the people currently in charge.
I dont know, but it seems for the past 4 yrs or so, the AFC South division has been weaker than Jags. Then I look at the Eagles, and I see a history of what could be considered a not so good team at all, ever, and....they get to the playoffs. That tells me the Eagles know how to play their division. Is that coaching? is that managing depth in the roster? is that managing the injured list as is relates to depth whenever they come up against a division opponent? Considering - how lucky- we have been relative to the strength of our division teams up until recently I don't see any reason why the Jags could not make it to the playoff's or have at least been in the playoffs in the past 4 years- compared to the Eagles. I welcome feedback and more learn-ed opinions.

.

Luke is our best defensive player - he's fine. Three of our DL are out but it's just precautionary at this point. They won't be on the injury report for week one. We won't be missing anyone on D.

Olsen is our best receiver....but I know what you mean. KB is #3 in the "offensive players we can't lose" behind Cam and Olsen. We will never be a pass team and we weren't going to be this year. We run the ball. If you look at last year we had a different starting OLine every week until week 11. Then we got JStew and Tolbert back. Only Seattle rushed for more than us. Plus you've got to account for Cam's runs.

The Cam is immature thing is some straight ESPN agenda stuff. That couldn't be further from the truth. It's Cam's team and they all follow him. Cam didn't run down Josh Norman. Josh picked him and ran it back. Cam gave chase to stop him from getting to the endzone (which is dumb for a QB to do in practice but I imagine it was more instinctual). Josh threw a stiff arm to get the fight going.

Everything you're saying is why I'm hopeful of the Jaguars chance at winning. The running game is important, but it's been explosive plays to the outside that have been killing the defense so far this preseason. If it's all about the TEs and running backs then I think the defense will be able to keep things in front of them and play the bend but don't break in the red zone style. We'll see. As for Cam's maturity, it might be ESPN stuff, but it goes with the rest of his history. He was notoriously immature in college, he does dumb things like end zone dances when his team is getting creamed, and trying to run down a DB in a drill to get into a fight is just dumb. I've never heard of Bortles doing anything like that at all. Add all of that to the fact that Cam hasn't lit up the league from a statistical point except throwing for a lot of yards as a rookie (and his yardage each year has actually declined while his INTs have stayed steady) and it's hard to see him as even in the second tier of QBs with the true elite guys leaving him in the dust.

If the Jaguars can't win the game in week 1 it won't be a good sign for the coaches here, because they've had long enough to get the team up to a point where it can win a home game against a team that plays tough defense and runs the ball well.
As long as I see Bortles prove he is a franchise quarterback I will be happy with this season.

This team has a ton of potential, but we are still one of the youngest teams in the leauge.  If it appears the coaching staff is continuing to develop the young players and the team is becoming more competitive that is still a win regardless of the record.

If your measure of success is putting out a winning record three years into the rebuild then I think the blame lies on the GM, because the roster talent is not in the top half of the leauge as the season starts.

This much was abundantly apparent in the Patriots game. Olsen literally was a beast out there, but after him the weapons are frightenly scarce. I noticed Ginn Jr with a nice catch, but their #2 WR dropped virtually everything thrown his way.

Yeah Brown has been horrible two weeks in a row. The kid is completely rattled right now. He didn't have a drops problem last year so I have no idea why he does all of a sudden. But yeah....it's a concern for sure.
6-10 should be the least expected of this team now, after seeing the pre-season to this point. We were fairly competitive last year after the previous year was just pitiful, but could never hang late. This year, obviously improvement is expected, but improvement from what? Anything less than 6 wins and I'll be disappointed. Really expecting 7 to 9 wins (9 being rather optimistic if we catch some good breaks along the way). Give me 7 with a team that's keeping most games tight with a chance to win, a Bortles that looks about like he did against the Lions throughout the year, and further improvement/development of the young offensive guys. I think next off-season we'll surely be targeting some of the defensive holes and competing for a wild card. (hopefully...)

Couple of thoughts from another Panther fan.

First, I come in peace.

I really like Bortles, I think he has all the tools to be really good, it's going to come down to surroundimg him with talent (both at OL and skill positions) and continuity. Tough to improve if you're constantly learning new offenses. I wish him the best.

I also like Gus, don't know if he IS THE guy to orchestrate turn around, but I like is fiery disposition and his tenacity, he'll instill a toughness that's essential to winning

As for the Panthers - Brown isn't, wasn't and will never likely be our 2. He's a complimentary deep threat, and gadget guy. I hope he can become more, but I don't see him rising above 3 or 4 on the depth chart. Fisrt, he needs to remember how to catch the ball because he hasn't shown any problem getting open, even against starting CB's.

I don't know a lot about your team, but the Panthers are infamous for slow starts, so I am not counting this as an easy win by any means. However, this team is way ahead of where they were at this ppint last season, so I'm very hopeful.

I hope for a good game with no injuries and I hope you guys win the division because I can't stand Luck.
I'm just glad Cam Newton isn't my QB.  He's the Jay Cutler of the South...  The guy's a loser that will never take a team to the superbowl.  That's just the fact.  And let's face it, the Panthers don't seem to be acquiring the talent around that QB to make them a consistent playoff team, much less make a deep playoff run...

BB5, well, there appears to be some hope of that with him we'll be playoff and SB contenders.  After 4 years of Cam in Carolina, I don't think anyone is worried about that franchise.  Though Mike Greenberg really finds Cam to be a handsome man, so you got that going for you guys.  LOL.

You must be the comedic relief.

Jay Cutler of the south, I like the comparison. He gets a lot of undue respect even though he's been an 80s passer rating guy. Great for 20+ years ago, middle tier right now. He's got great athletic talent and a big arm, but he's looking more and more like a guy that will never progress past what he currently is as a passer.
Lol, I do appreciate a good laugh.

That's how I see it too.  Jay Cutler got alot of love for his Arm and the talent he has.  Cam is the same way, with the addition of being so handsome that some of the ESPN zombies are enamored with him.

That's all well and good, but a championship it does not earn your city.
Quote:I'm drunk.  But you're crazy if you think we go 0-4 to start.  We're easily 2-2 and possibly 3-1 after the first month...

He's a much taller and slightly less talented Mike Vick.
Now it's getting funny in here.

You guys are in for a big surprise in two weeks.

Cam is an above average QB with athletic upside to be elite. His decision making is not the best, and neither are his mechanics.
I find it hilarious the number of bona fide scouts we have here. Given the lineage of elite QB's that have called Jax home, I definitely get it.
