Browns FS Tashaun Gipson said he's "perfectly fine" playing out this season on his one-year, $2.356 restricted free agent tender.

Gipson sees the light of the tunnel in the form of unrestricted free agency next March. If he plays like he did last season -- when opposing quarterbacks had a passer rating of just 41.9 throwing into his coverage and he recorded six picks in 11 games -- Gipson will command at least $6-7 million annually.

Here's hoping James Sample works out but if not Gipson would be our Earl Thomas.
i personally want to see im do it for another year before i consider him to be atop safety. Take out the jags game and he has 4 INTs in 10 games which is still pretty good just want to see hi do it again

No way, even if he doesnt get a contract extension he would be tagged
Bobby Wagner

The team is going to need to look at what's available out there on the secondary QB market because this is the final year of Henne's deal.  I would expect to see the team explore their options there, and there should be a few decent options at QB to chose from if they decide not to extend Chad beyond this season (I fully expect them to go in a different direction).

The team could choose to draft a developmental type instead. Which would be ideal IMO. Keep him around for 3 years and if he shows an inkling of potential ship him off for draft picks. Rinse and repeat.

IIRC, Seattle is in negotiations with him now. I don't think he's going to test the market. (Even though as a player I would sure as hell try.)

You still want to have someone who has some playing experience backing up your QB if possible.  There are going to be quite a few quality options available when the dust settles.

Developmental QBs are nice to have, but I'm not sure I'd want to hand the keys to a guy who has never been on the field in an actual game in the NFL, especially if you are forced by injury to depend on him for any extended length of time.  There are guys who should be available with decent starting experience in the league, and I would expect to see the team look at the available options to assure we have a viable alternative in the event Bortles gets hurt.

This.

Here's to hoping Seattle doesn't get a deal done.

That doesn't seem likely.  He's looking for around $10 million per year, and the Seahawks reportedly aren't disputing that figure.  He'll never see free agency.

Agreed.

NE has this down to a science!
With going after McCourty this year, unless Sample makes the pro bowl there's no reason not to pursue Gipson hard.
If we do part ways with Chad Henne after this season (and I'm not convinced that we will), Chase Daniel would be an interesting target for the backup job. Accurate passer, decent mobility, could be a solid fill-in if Bortles misses time.

I don't see Henne sticking around beyond this year.  I think they'll want to get younger at the position while still finding someone who has starting experience.  Daniel was one of the guys I was thinking about because he'd be a good fit for the offense we'd be running.  The difference between Henne and Bortles is mostly about mobility and athleticism.  Too much of a contrast there moving forward.

That only works if your QB is staying upright.  Brady has proven to be quite durable, but if his suspension isn't overturned and they have to start the season with their current backup, that genius will be exposed because Jimmy isn't even remotely close to Tom.

The Jaguars are a team that can afford to bring in a young veteran with starting experience.  It won't break the bank, and it's far better than hoping a prospect will be ready should he be called upon.

If Henne shows a good grasp of the system and the coaching staff remains confident in his ability to lead the team for a game or two, I wouldn't be surprised to see him back. I'm not sure that ten games of Chase Daniel would be any better than ten games of Chad Henne if Bortles is out for an extended period.

I guess you don't remember the season Tom went down and they still went to the playoffs with, at the time, an inexperienced QB in Matt Cassel?  Then they recouped picks, same as they did with Mallet.  Jimmy's just next in line.  Lots of teams have inexperienced backups.  Heck, we did with David Garrard and he ended up being the best QB on the roster.  IMO, this is the better route, rather than having a known commodity journeyman QB.  At least give your team the chance for lightning to strike like it did in GB with the inexperienced Rodgers backing up Favre.

For every Matt Cassel, there are ten (or more) Craig Whelihans.

I agree. See Rob Johnson.
