Quote:Awesome to read this. We ever had a qb do this type of thing?

I want to say Blaine did this before but I may be mistaken.
I think it's great what Bortles is doing, but I hope he invited Henne.  I don't want him wearing out his arm.

I am glad Bortles is doing this, but isn't it normal for starting QBs to do this sort of thing? I feel I remember Blaine Gabbert doing the same thing.

Quote:I don't know about that, but teams with new head coaches start a week before everyone else. That makes me wonder if it is OK to contact a new offensive coordinator without a change at head coach.

I think they are allowed to get the playbook but can not contact coaches.

I think Olson should send everyone just 10 plays and say, "Learn these plays thoroughly.  There will be a test in April and I expect 100% correct answers."

How is he going to wear out his arm?  There is nothing to worry about.

Just 10? If you can't memorize 10 plays, you shouldn't be the the league.

Blain went to Larry Fitzgeralds passing camp with a couple of the recievers one year

To add to this Blake went to Big Bens Passing camp before the start of last year.

First of all, a play can be quite complicated depending on the defense that is faced.   For example, receivers have to make route adjustments based on the coverage, and they have to make the route adjustment the quarterback expects.   And it's true of every position.   It's a lot more than just,

"52 x right on 2, where do I line up and what route do I run or whom am I supposed to block."

You can probably ask each player dozens of questions about each play.   Because it can be very complicated, with many variables, and one mistake by one player can cause the entire play to break down.   Tight end goes in motion, and a defender either goes with him or not.   What does that mean?   Are they in man or zone?   How is the defense lined up?   What do you do if they're lined up one way or another way?   At this point, you can't ask anyone for the answer.   You, the quarterback, and everyone else on offense has to know the answer, and your actions at that point have to be automatic.

The reason I would only give them 10 plays is to give them a base of knowledge that is second nature, that they know so well they don't have to think at all.   Then and only then would I give them the rest of the play book.

Now, I know you are going to say, you don't need a lesson in football, you already know all this stuff.  All I'm doing is explaining why I would only give them 10 plays until they know them so automatically they perform them perfectly without thinking.

Last year, the coaches and players both stated repeatedly that what was holding back the offense was that on almost every play, someone was making a mistake and that caused the play to break down.    Was there any play we could call last year where we knew absolutely positively no one was going to make a mistake?

Ten plays.  Perfect execution every time.  No mistakes.  Ever.  Then and only then do we move forward.   That's the way I would do it.

Personally, i hope Marcedes has a Dynamite year. His last contract year he has 10TDs.. If he can stay healthy I and work on his hands, that will create chemistry with Bortles. If he puts together like 7TDs Im sure we all will be very happy

His problems have always been there.  He drops open passes and he fumbles a lot.

I realize this. Guess i'm just being optimistic. But honestly his fades in the end zone have always been pretty consistent and its not like hes "never" had a great season before. Probably just wishful thinking but i hope he can do it again. Not just for our sake but it will help Blake a TON.

According to NFL.com, he has 4 career fumbles with 3 lost. That's not a lot.

Yep. And the drops are blown out of proportion as well. Middle of the pack.
Always a positive to hear a 2nd year QB taking the reigns on improving the offense. The offensive coordinator just got hired and the playbooks isn't even into the mix yet entirely but the one thing you can always work on is chemistry, trust, and comfort. This is great.

And that has been proven many, many times on this board.

People overblow Lewis' lack of production and miscues because there are Antonio Gates, Jimmy Graham's, and Gronkowski's out there scoring TDs every week.

And Lewis is stuck trying to help the O-line block and not really used a lot of a pass catcher.

He's also getting older and not really getting better with a big contract.

Lewis can only do what is asked of him.

Proven how? In 2011 PFF ranked him 31/35 in drop rate. 2012 He was 22/37. 2013 he was 40/41. 2014 he didn't get enough snaps but he would've had the 6th worst drop rate. He drops a lot of passes.

For 2013, this shows the highest drop percentages in the league among tight ends. Guess who is not on there?

Here is the 2012 list. Also not there.
