It's funny because Gus did say "accuracy, timing, and decision making" were the traits he looked at for his franchise QB... and he actually used that exact same quote when describing Blake Bortles.

Reading this thread makes me wish I tried to get back here after Round 1 was completed because I can't quote enough posters. Next year I will watch the draft online so I don't have to play catch-up in a 19-page thread.

 

First of all, I will never understand why anybody thinks just because the Bills gave the Browns two 2015 picks, they offered the same deal to us. It also is stupid to say the Jaguars certainly would not have missed out on Blake Bortles at #9 just because the Browns, Raiders, and Vikings put off picking their quarterbacks. There is no way the Jaguars could have known what those teams would have done if Bortles was still available. The idea that we reached on Bortles does not make sense either because the media talked about him as a possible #1 pick. What really happened was the Falcons tried to trade up and we listened, then told them no out of fear either the Browns or Raiders would have picked Bortles if he was available. I never read anything about the Bills calling us first, then giving the Browns two 2015 picks because we said no, as some message board posters seem to assume.

 

On Bortles being the next Blaine Gabbert: Where did you guys get that idea from? UCF does not run the shotgun-heavy spread offense nearly as much as Missouri did. I only read two comparisons: big guy and developmental player. Nobody ever said they play the same way or have the same bad habits. You all know Gabbert needs what he could never get in Jacksonville: a pass-first offense run by an offensive-minded coach, better players around him, and a chance to be the backup for a while. Bortles? Just give him a year on the bench in an environment where there is no pressure to start right away, draft some more offensive players, and keep the same coaching staff for more than one year and he will be OK. Plus he was not drafted during a lockout and has the full benefit of rookie minicamps, OTAs, etc. to speed up his development, so he could start his career on the right paw.

 

Everybody who wanted Johnny Manziel has not been paying attention. Gus Bradley said he wants humility along with the confidence, implying Manziel does not have that trait. He also said Manziel is a bad fit for our offense IIRC. Manziel himself publicly stated he hopes the Jaguars don't pick him. Mockers thought he would be a good fit for the Jaguars only because of the excitement factor in a city that needs it, not his playing style matching Bradley's offense. We did not want Tim Tebow, the guy people like comparing Manziel to as a quarterback. The media hyped up Manziel the whole time because he is a polarizing figure and Heisman Trophy winner who played in the SEC  (like Tebow) without ever saying it would be stupid if Bortles is picked first. Nobody ever said Manziel is our best option for returning to the playoffs because he is not.

That's pretty much the same conclusion that I came up with.  The only difference is Manziel doesn't wear his religion on his sleeve.  As far as skill, he's a talented athlete, but not really a great NFL quarterback.

Not true. Tim Tebow was never suspended half a game for an off-field mistake. He also does not throw the same way and the biggest knock on him before the 2010 draft was his passing motion, not a tendency to look at one receiver and run. They also are not similar in size  Playing style and skill sets may be comparable, but not much else.

I posted here until I was unable to retrieve my password. Then I continued to visit NFL.com and posted on a Broncos message board. I also watched every minute of the draft, from player introductions to Mr. Irrelevant being picked. And yes, I did visit NFL.com regularly after the combine.

I see where Caldwell indicated that Atlanta offerred the Jaguars a 3rd round pick to switch places in the first round. What do you think the chances would have been that Bortles would have still been there at pick 6? I totally understand that Bortles was the Jags guy and didn't want to risk losing him to Cleveland, Oakland or a team that loved him enough to trade up to pick 4 or 5. However, how nice would it have been if the Jags made this trade, still got Bortles and was able to also draft Marcus Martin with the pick from Atlanta?

Buffalo would have traded up to take Watkins and Oakland would not have taken Bortles, although I don't know who they would have taken since Mack would have been selected by Atlanta. Imagine adding the draft's best center to the haul the Jaguars still got. They would have earned an A++ grade rather than the A most experts gave them. I guess I'm just greedy, but I would have rolled the dice on that one and if I lost I would have "settled" for Manziel or Evans and traded back up for Teddy if Evans was the pick.

No extra pick is worth the risk of losing your qb.

No thanks to Manziel at all.  He's not a Gus Bradley type of player.  And I wouldn't want to worry about trading back up for Teddy, especially if he wasn't Dave's #1 QB on the board.  Trading up for Teddy would also likely mean we don't get Marqise Lee.

Brewster better get a lot stronger or the Jaguars will be at great risk for losing whoever their q.b. turns out to be.

When I see film like this, it's a complete 180 from how Gabbert Played. He shows instincts,ability to improvise,and instincts. 

 

Watch at 1:22 how he knows he is going to get hit but stands tall to make the completion.  Gabbert has never made a throw like that in his life.

What's funny to me is, they may never be able to 'correct' his footwork.  No question about the Big Ben comparisons, and ole Ben's feet seems the same as they ever was..

Guy really is an Andrew Luck starter kit, as I read someone else say the other day. He has all the natural traits that make Luck great,including his clutch factor, and has similar arm strength. He just needs the refining that Luck already has. I hope he doesn't make some of the mistakes Luck makes though...like 4+ interceptions in playoff games....

First off, an extra third rounder wouldn't be enough to make that trade enticing, especially if you knew Bortles was your guy.


Cleveland would have taken him and that extra pick wouldn't take the sting of losing a guy you envision being your franchise QB. Settling for Manziel wouldn't make it any better, especially knowing he's really not the type of guy Gus & Dave have targeted.


Bortles just fits here. It was a risky decision, but nobody will care about an extra third round pick if Bortles pans out.
