Bortles mechanics have been discussed multiple times.  So has his arm strength.

His arm is plenty strong.

His mechanics need work.  He's admitted that himself.  It's one reason he's going to get the necessary time needed to work on these areas to become a more complete quarterback.

I thought it important to keep this at the top of each thread page.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness.
Quote:I agree about the irrelevance. However the vibe in the stadium when Henne throws his sixth int in four games...heck there'd be groans after consecutive three and outs
Again, the vibe in the stadium isn't going to determine when Bortles assumes the starting role.  Fans can howl and complain, or groan and moan all they want.  He's not taking the field until Bradley, Caldwell, Fisch, and Bortles feel he's ready.  Fans are just going to have to deal with it and accept the fact that there's no entitlement here.  When he's ready he's ready.

ditto.
I like the Bortles pick.  But you people drooling over his GF are crazy.  Maybe the picture at the top of the page doesn't do her justice or something.  From the picture, I don't think she's all that pretty, much less hot...

The tan is oompa loompa orange spray on, her smile isn't all that great, her hair is a mess and that jersey she is wearing fits her like a mu-mu that was cut short...

Is it just me?  I'm sure there are much better pictures of her, but that one is less that flattering.

Look her up on google and you'll be editing this post immediately haha

LOL, OK!  I'm sure it's just a really bad picture with bad make-up and bad airbrush/editing...  I think my main beef is that the picture probably does not do her justice.  :-)
"We do feel good about where Blake's at, but we feel like this time that he has under Chad, a year to develop, will be really good for him in the end result," Bradley said. "So our plan is to stay really strong with this." - Gus

I think it of as his senior year except instead of playing and possibly being injured he's learning the system.  I dont understand why they drafted him #3rd overall if they didnt feel he was ready, but considering the OLine situation why risk the #3overall pick by putting him in there game 1.  I do think regardless of what they say that he will play mid season though.

michael sam?
The Titans drafted Vince Young with the 3rd pick in the draft and threw him out there with awful mechanics.    He won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2006.   Must have been a great pick, right?    No.  Who cares.  Winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year  It was completely  meaningless and an empty achievement that ultimately accomplished nothing.     Not only is he not with the Titans anymore, he can't even hold a job in the league because his mechanics are still so horrendous.

Some guys can't see the forrest from the trees.  They think the ultimate goal is to get a guy who wins the Rookie of the Year or ends up on the All Rookie Team, and that alone ultimately makes a great pick.    That's not what ultimately makes a great pick.  The ultimate  goal is to get a guy who's going to have his jersey retired in front of your fans in your home stadium 15-20 years down the road.   I don't care if Bortles isnt' starting until Year 4, if he ultimately has his jersey hanging from the stadium rafters, he was every bit of the 3rd pick in the draft.    I don't give a flip about starting rookies in Week 1.    Plugging roster holes with  bodies is not  what the draft is for.  The Jags have $30 million in available cap space to just plug holes with a warm body for Week 1.   The draft, particularly the high end of the draft, is about acquiring the elite, high end talent you can't obtain through any other means.  You can find any other position on the open market.  First ballot  Hall of Famers like DeMarcus Ware and Darelle Revis were available on the open market this year.     The Peyton Mannings and Drew Brees only see the open market once every blue moon, and you're going to be competing against half the league to sign them.   If you ever have a chance to draft a QB you think could eventually become that kind of QB, you have to pull the trigger.   There's only about 5-7 of them walking the earth at any particularly moment in time.   Who knows when you'll have another opportunity to get one.

You're not drafting a QB at #3 for his rookie year.  When he takes over is irrelevant.  What matters is that WHEN he takes over, he meets expectations.  With the line in it's current state, and a crop of inexperienced receivers to work with, it's best to let Henne stand out there and be the tackling dummy while these aspects develop, and then plug Bortles in when he's ready to go.

Bortles is expected to be your QB for the next decade if he is what they think he will be.  When he starts means very little, especially this year.

Vince Young won RoY by default; that entire offensive rookie class pretty much sucked.  And V. Young failed in the NFL because he doesn't have the work ethic or mental makeup to play the game -- not because he won RoY.
Has anyone watched Bortles' 2012 tape? One of my favorite things about him is how much he improved from 2012 to 2013. It's so clear in the game tape how much better he got. His 2012 game against Missouri you would never think this guy could even crack the first 2 rounds and then you watch him against Penn State in 2013 and you see potential first overall pick... He's got super potential..

I did and it was amazing.. Makes me think this kids ceiling is really high.

And I prefer it that way! I think the Jaguar front office is doing things the right way! Up here in New York (Jersey is just a suburb of NYC), Geno Smith was not ready to start and if it wasn't for an above average defense keeping games close, their season should have been a lot worse. If Geno would have sat last year I think it would have been to his advantage.

Now with the Jaguars, give him a year to work on his transition to the NFL and learn the offense. Although the Jaguars plan to have a winning record this year (I predict 9-7 or 8-8) they are in know way superbowl or playoff bound. In my opinion, I think the front office wants to be competetive this year, but the true plan is to let it rip in 2015 and make a run!

By then, Bortles will be ready, more peices will be in place. You may not agree with or like the plan, but i like the fact that the Jaguar front office is saying "Hey, this is our plan and we're sticking to it!" I can respect that, and here is to a winning record for the 2014 season!
Ooops

He may get his chance to sit this year now that they brought in Vick.  He's certainly on a very short leash.

Just because it's been customary lately to start QBs early (a product of the previous CBA's ridiculous rookie contracts and nothing more) doesn't make it the smart thing to do.

Since the rookie contracts have become more reasonable than they were in the past, we should see sitting and grooming QBs become the common route again.  Unless of course, you're talking about teams without any QB at all like the Colts were... which speaks of an even larger problem with a franchise (not having a successor or even a backup plan in place prior to letting your cupboard run completely bare.)

If you're forced to start a rookie QB, you aren't just a bad team who earned a high draft pick.  You're a poorly run franchise for neglecting your roster so badly.
