Quote:You keep him until someone can take the job from him.
He only got the job because of injury, he never earned it. I agree he played better then BG but it still is not a acceptable level of play to warrant any type of contract imo. Just start any rook and probably win more than either has.

It is sad how far this fanbase has fallen. The idea that someone would find the idea of signing a guy like Henne (with the idea of him starting!) anything but a white flag by the management and greet it with anything but derision is ridiculous.
Resigning Henne with the idea of him starting is the definition of insanity. He's been in the league quite a while now, anyone who isn't clear on the fact that he shouldn't even be in the league at this point probably should visit a neurologist because they might have some problems with the things their senses should be telling them when they watch the guy play reaching their brain.
Why Caldwell wouldn't be looking to bring some fresh faces in at the position in free agency instead of keeping it stale is beyond me.
Quote:What is happening with Blaine Gabbert? I heard rumors about him possibly being traded for a draft pick a few months ago.
Heehee! The only "rumors" of a Gabbert trade came from this board... Wishful thinking is all it was.
Quote:3 million dollars per year is WAAAAAAAAAAAY too much for a guy of Henne's quality.
The Jaguars can be terrible with Gabbert under center, no reason to pay a guy like Henne anything more than Veterans minimum to be terrible.
If Henne has the belief he can go out and get paid significantly more than vet min on the open market then Caldwell needs to let him go get it. This isn't a team that needs to waste extra money on guys that don't contribute to winning just to fill out roster slots.
I'd rather pay Henne $3 million than Gabbert at this point.
I don't think the team is going to low ball Henne and offer him the league minimum as the OP implied. There's value in having a veteran QB who knows the system and the personnel, especially when there's no guarantee we're going to land a QB in the draft who will be ready to step in as the starter any time soon.
People like you act like this is your money they're spending. The team has to spend their cap money. We can't bargain basement every player and hit the minimum spending requirements. If you're stroking the check for Henne, then you can complain about how overpriced he is. In this market, he's as close to a bargain as we are gonna get.
He is one of the best back-up QB's in the league and is warranted the 3m over two years. That's a good deal for Henne.

What value is that? That the Jaguars only lose by 20 or 30 points to good teams and can sort of hang with other bottom feeders?
Why pay Henne when you can try someone new, or spend more heavily on other positions for GOOD players, or players that actually have a possibility of getting better. You may not agree, but I've seen enough years of Henne to know he's never going to be even average, he's always going to be bad.
Your main problem is you keep comparing Henne to Gabbert, which is idiotic. The Jaguars shouldn't be measuring what a worthwhile QB is against one of the worst QBs of the last decade, they have to measure against everyone else, and against everyone else Henne is clearly not good.

If this is true, what it means is there is not a quality QB holding a back up position in the league. If Henne is one of the best back-ups, you don't want to be one of the best. Whether you are paying him 3 million a year or league minimum both are a waste of the cash.
Quote:With Henne gone, it is time for Gabbert to shine. He's got the height, weight, arm strength to play QB in the NFL. It's the mental part that's been lacking. I believe it is there now and it is his time to prove the non-believers.
Ohhhhh, NOW I get why you hate Teddy.

I don't think you understand what a quality back-up means for a team. Did you not see what happened with Green Bay this year?

Are any of these free agents better than Henne, and not costlier more than Henne?

This. Henne is cheap insurance, Gabbert is indentured servitude
It doesn't matter if we get BorManCarGarBridgeCaronBerger or who ever.
There will be competition, Henne is a serviceable backup, Gabbert is dead money.
If we sign Henne and Gabbert fails to win starting job, he rides the pine and Chad starts until "the GUY" is found or emerges.

We have something like 70 million in cap space assuming we cut Babin. Do you REALLY think 3 million is going to matter that much in the grand scheme of things?
Quote:He is one of the best back-up QB's in the league and is warranted the 3m over two years. That's a good deal for Henne.
Someone else suggested he get 3 million PER year.
3 million over 2 years is still overpaying, but not by nearly as much.
Still, I think I'd rather see Caldwell churn some roster and see if someone clicks with Fisch since it's clear that Henne doesn't.

Why spend cap space on someone you already know is terrible?
If that's the direction Caldwell goes and anyone out of the free agency pool even goes on to have a season with a passer rating in the 80's resigning Henne will look like laziness or an inability to evaluate.

Lacking Courage, Pocket Presence, any other mental aspects that go along with being a QB in the league is not very promising.

3M is NOT too much. you obviously know nothing about market value of quarterbacks. exclude the recent rookie QB who are on a pay scale, 3M is a very favorable deal for the jaguars.
Quote:Henne is better than Gabbert. I'm really sorry to say it, because I was hoping Blaine would be our QB, but after watching last season, Henne is MUCH better than Gabbert.
Quote:Henne is lightyears better than Gabbert.
Nah, Henne's really only a little bit better. Just a lot more experienced.
There's plenty of Henne's out there, and he's probably aware of that. Neither the Jags FO nor Henne have a true power advantage over the other.
They'll get a deal done before draft day.
Don't let the door hit you on the way out Henne.
