Personally I'd stick with Bortles, bring in a rookie to challenge him and cut Henne. Surely the main focus for us would be improving the O-line...
If Bortles gets a good, clean pocket he can throw well
I keep reading comments such as this. If the Jaguars retain Bortles, at whatever price, he's the starting QB and no rookie will be challenging him. Any rookie would be lucky to get much work at all.

Bringing in a rookie is more about 2019 than 2018, but it's still very reasonable to think Blake would be challenged by a first or second round rookie. Even if the rookie doesn't get much work with the ones, he'd push Blake to earn another contract in Jacksonville by improving his play or being replaced.
I have a feeling we are going to be disappointed with the offseason and the QB position. I'm not convinced they will draft a QB this year. I think we are looking at all or nothing.

So it plays out just like last season? We go all in on Bortles and Henne?
Man. I hope not. I want Henne out.

At this point, Eli is living on name recognition.

I can't see not drafting one in the first 3 rounds.
Bortles will be the guy but I'm sure the Jags will make a run at one of the available free agents and find a QB project in the draft. This draft looks pretty weak in QB talent though. Going to be a lot of teams reaching!

I agree but I'm betting they will limit the competition to pump up the ego and confidence of the guy that does everything they ask him to do. You know hand off on first and second down and try to make 3rd and medium throws.
/end sarcasm

I believe people are referring to keeping Bortles under his current contract, which only has 1 year left and drafting a QB to possibly replace him by 2019. I didn't take it as signing Bortles long term.

I would think we'd pretty much have to draft a QB somewhere in the draft, as Henne is an UFA and hopefully won't be back. If we go all or nothing this year with Bortles and it doesn't work, we're screwed. There appears to be nothing available in the 2019 QB free agent class and that draft class looks weak as well. Based on 2017 performances, I don't see a QB in that class that I'd spend a 1st or 2nd round pick on. If we want to protect ourselves, we have to get a good QB from this class or pray that Bortles some way, some how, turns into a consistent starter in 2018, which at this point seems like a longshot to me.

Next year looks like a way worse QB class.
If jags decide to go rookie they should trade up and get their guy.
I do think Jax will take a look at Cousins but ultimately we will end up sticking with Blake. At that point, I think we draft a QB high like Mason Rudolph or we bring in a cheaper vet and draft a mid-round guy like Mike White or Kyle Lauletta.
My problem is trying to figure out a “cheap vet” that the Jags could bring in to push Blake. Brees, Cousins, and Keenum will get paid. Bridgewater most likely stay in Minnesota. Then you are looking at Bradford, McCarron, and McCown and even those guys might be out of our price range.
We rollin' with Chortles again ya'll.

You thought of that all by yourself? If so then you need to be more creative with your words because that joke was corny and childish.

Corny and childish? Moi???
Your words have pierced my heart.
I shall retire to my fainting couch to reconsider my very existence.
I've been throwing the name of A. J. McCarron around hoping that Tom will do whatever is necessary to secure his services.
The key date for A. J. is February 15th. That's when the decision concerning his grievance filed against the Cincinnati Bengals is in.
If he wins, it means the league office has granted him a year of service which he feels the Bengals took away from him. The good news for the Jaguars is he immediately becomes a unrestricted free agent with a favorable outcome. We can hopefully make him a Jaguar.
If he loses, the Bengals will still be in a tight spot and we may be able to trade a second round pick for McCarron. A. J., drafted in 2014, is unhappy the Bengals spoiled his rookie season by listing him as injured for many weeks - something he disputes in his grievance. As a result of being injury listed by the team, A. J. lost a year of accrued service so that entering this season, his fifth season, he is a restricted free agent.
This is why the Bengals attempted to unload McCarron on Cleveland for a second and third round pick last November. However, the league office nixed the trade claiming the paperwork was transfered to them too late.
Why McCarron?
1. He's a better quarterback than other options which are being discussed. His experience in championship football. His awareness on the field is very good. He has a very high completion percentage on throws that travel OVER 40 yards. He won two NCAA Division I titles.
In limited action in the 2015 playoffs he subbed in for an injured Andy Dalton and led the Bengals including a solid, 16-point fourth quarter rally capping it with a pretty amazing 25-yard TD pass to A. J. Green, for what would have been a game-winning drive against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Had it not been for a pair of absolutely bone-headed defensive penalties by the Bengals' defense, McCarron would have given Marvin Lewis an actual playoff win. Before that I believe he finished off the regular season steering Cincinnati to a 2-1 record as the starter.
2. He has been groomed by the Bengals. He has a solid grasp on how to play quarterback in the NFL. He will step in to a Jaguars' uniform and be the starting franchise quarterback for the next ten years.
3. In that McCarron has still to prove he is the franchise quarterback we all know he can be, he represents immediate value in contract terms. He signs with the Jaguars. He is given a modest three year deal with a understanding that if he is what both sides believe he can be the deal will be torn up and a better, higher salary - more years contract will be drawn up.
At this point don't be surprised if New England has a lot to say about where A. J. McCarron will land. Tom Brady figures to lure McCarron in and work him into the Patriots' system.
While this is possible, let's not stand on the sidelines and watch New England reload at quarterback prior to extending their NFL supremacy for the next ten years. Let do what we need to do to land A. J. McCarron right here. Right now.
If we are not gonna trade up to take a QB and one of the top QB's does not fall to us, I say we trade down into the top part of round 2 and take the BAP. We could pick up a draft selection or two and probably still get the same player we were targeting at #29.
If McCarron is allowed to FA, I see him ending up in Cleveland. He was excited at the prospect of going there after he heard about the failed trade and there were also reports that he was seen walking around the Senior Bowl wearing a Browns hat.
Cleveland will be drafting a QB but I can see them bringing in McCarron to be their bridge QB.
McCarron is ok, but he's not better than Blake.

I agree it's about 2019. If Bortles is retained no rookie will be challenging him, even a first or second round rookie. They won't get the practice time. And do you really see the Jaguars using a first round selection on a QB if they keep Bortles? Anything is possible, but I highly doubt it.
If retained Bortles knows he's playing to earn a long time contract, regardless of whether a QB is drafted in April. No pushing needed.
