The good thing about this whole scenario is that there are numerous players being linked to the Jags at #4.  Thomas, Allen, Adams, Hooker, Fournette, Cook, Lattimore, and now Howard.  I think it gives you a good poker face.  Unfortunately, Coughlin has been known to "reach" so I hope he's leaving the draft to Caldwell and his staff.  I think Howard would be a reach.  

 Both TC and Dave have reached, especially in the 1st. Dave does a better job sticking with his board in the later rounds, whereas TC has historically been a needs drafter throughout.

 

I'd let TC get the final say on 1st rounds especially a top 5 pick and let DC keep picking the later rounds.

We had a premier tight end here the last 2 years and we didn't even know what to do with him. I'm not sure that we would know what to do with Howard either. TE is a luxury piece. We have more important needs and we can get a good TE in a later round.

Our best RB of this generation can't find a taker late in the FA process at 31 years old. Nor can the 30 year old RB who blows away the entire NFL history in yards per carry.

I'm not sure I like Howard enough to pick him above some of the others that'll be available then but this is a great point.


Yardage and touchdowns. It probably shouldn't matter too much how they're given as long as you have someone that can get them.

So he's basically top 10 in receiving and TDs (for al positions), a great blocker, Offensive ROY, Pro-bowl, and all pro by his second season?  And eventually hall of fame, and considered one of the 10 best TEs of all time?

This reasoning doesn't make sense to me. If TE is a luxury, shouldn't we get the luxury player over an average player? I would rather have an elite player and figure out how to utilize him than draft according to the playcalling of the coach. If it's a crappy coach you're going to have a crappy team. If it's a good coach they will integrate the playcalling to fully utilize the elite player. 

 

I've heard many people say we should wait to draft a RB, TE, QB, etc. but we can only draft one player at a time. You are also assuming a good player will be there at each pick. Just because there is a lot of depth in the draft doesn't mean we can wait to pick someone from the bottom.

Yeah sorry but the lazy, out of shape, oft injuried TE we had here wasn't even close to a premier TE.

And you are actually rooting for the guy who has missed on 3 top 5 picks to be left alone to make the pick? Yikes.

I would love us to draft Howard - we would finally have a TE we could be confident in. The sort that lots of other teams keep hold of for many productive years.


And if we want a player who isn't a huge gamble - it's him.


But there will be players available to us who can simply make a bigger impact for us, and we can't afford to pass on them.

I still have nightmares of OJ Howard running untouched down the field in the NC against Clemson.. what I couldn't believe was that, with all the athleticism in the Clemson secondary, no one could catch him. Couldn't even get close. He has the speed of a WR at 6' 6". He's like Matt Jones if Matt Jones could play football.

And for all of the "omg 4.51 at 240 lbs for Fournette!", Howard ran the exact same 4.51 at 251 lbs. Oh yeah and the elite 3 cone, broad jump, and shuttles that Fournette will probably suck at like he did the vertical. I emphasize probably because Howard didn't have a great vertical either and blew out the rest of the drills, but that's very rare.

Howard is the best blocking TE in this class...how could someone be so lazy as to make that comparison?

 

The playerprofiler comp that does it by athletic markers has him comped to Greg Olsen, which would be a great addition to our team.
