Quote:I didn't get into too much detail, not as a deflection. The reason is the most base and simple reason you can think of.  Bigotry.  They are homebodies who pay their bills on time. They live in a very rural part of the most liberal state you could think of. They have a family member who is transgender. In one case, the landlord realized a family member was transgender, didn't like it and gave them 2 weeks to find a new place. In another, neighbors realized there was a trans person living there several months after they moved in and pressured the landlord to remove them because they didn't like them. I don't want to post more details than I need to, especially about the firing, as there is a pending legal case, but work performance, attendance, etc. was not an issue.

You'll have to take my word on this. They were unjustly discriminated against because of one person's sexual identity. Why people care? Great question. Lack of education, understanding or empathy? I assure you they did not choose this life for themselves and have gone through Hell loving their family as they are.

Thanks for the details. I wish them luck. It's unfortunate that the two places they chose to live both had intolerant landlords.

I'm opposed to such bigotry. I'm also opposed to the government using force in these cases because while it may help some people it will hurt others. As with medicine, the first rule of government should be "do no harm."

Hopefully eight.

When are you going to pay for the Wall?

That's a different thread. This one is about Obama torching US foreign relations like a petulant child.

Quote:So everyone should be equal and on a level playing field. Then incarceration rates should not be skewed so drastically to target minorities. Affluenza should be rejected as an acceptable defense tactic for rich white people who break the law. Oh.. and since you mention sexual identity, I assume you will be writing the Jax City Council in support of an expanded HRO to protect the 36,000 citizens who can still be fired, evicted or kicked out of a restaurant for being gay in this city. Unless you feel like voicing your support in person on Tuesday evening when it gets reintroduced.

I agree on the criminal justice issues, disagree on the HRO ones.

Why? How does giving LGBT people the equal rights you have impact your life? The revised language excludes churches and small businesses of 15 people or less. What issue do you have with allowing 36,000 tax payers from stepping out of second-class citizen status?

Because my right to use my property as I see fit is none of your damn business.

Um.. what does that mean? I'd have to know how you use your property to even begin to understand how giving these taxpayers equal rights would in the slightest way impact you.

"Fair housing" laws impinge on my private property rights. All you Socialists think you have the right to a say in my property rights, its why we'll never agree. Its fine, go away.

Trying to follow you, but not sure I do. Are you saying you wish to reserve the right to not allow a gay person who meets the financial requirements to rent or buy a house you own?

I dont need anyone's permission to use my property as I see fit. The core belief of Socialism is the destruction of private property, I'm not interested in playing their game.

Yeah.. that's great. But you haven't answered how providing equal protection for LGBT people destroys your ability to do what you want with your property. Care to explain?

Stop being obtuse, you know the legal ramifications and loss of property rights once a special interest group of any sort has an inch of leverage.

Do you consider black people to be a special interest group? What about handicapped people? Old people? Jews?

I don't understand why you can't just say what you are afraid of happening if the HRO gets expanded. That you might be forced to rent or sell a property to LGBT people who meet the financial qualifications?

Here's a couple of simple questions for you.  What is the difference between a gay person and a heterosexual person?  What rights do heterosexual people have that gay people don't?

Yes, its none of your business who I choose not to rent to for whatever reason. Mine, not yours. Get it?

It is when you decide to publicly rent. Rent privately and you can a bigot.

So you want to reserve the right to discriminate. Because blacks, Mexicans, gays or Jews have tainted money? They are not as clean as white Christians?

The Civil Rights movement which happened long before you owned that property enacted law which says if you want to make a real estate investment, you cannot choose who to rent to so long as they meet the financial qualifications.

But it's nice to see you're true colors. Not everyone is brave enough to out themselves as such. Now I understand your issue with expanding an HRO. It would just mean an increased chance of you having to rent to a demographic you feel you are better than.

Screw freedom and equality... if they ain't like me.

Really. Do you truly not know?
