Quote:PS: did I mention that by all accounts, Henne also looks pretty sharp out there. Smile

First day of OTA's and we're going off other people's reports since it wasn't open to the public.  Slow down there speedy.
Quote:But then how do you bench a guy who's lighting it up?

Easy.  You point to the bench and tell him to grab the clipboard sitting on it.

no.. If Henne is playing well and the team is winning, building chemistry and confidence than you don't bench him (at least not this season).

You sir deserve a round of applause
I don't think any of the Henne optimists would take a sig bet he throws 20 TDs this year.

Exactly, and it was a board troll, no less (Jagfan32)
Training camp hasnt even started.

QB controversy a la Joe Montana & Steve Young.

Henne has a history of not looking good in any practice sessions.  It's encouraging to hear he's taking a different tact this time around.  Not sure why anyone needs to slow down.  Nobody is rushing to any conclusions.

And?

I love how people need to tamp down anything that might be perceived as remotely positive if it's a player they simply don't like.  It's a good thing Henne has started out playing well even if it is just OTAs.  It's a sign that being in the same system for more than a year is something that he benefits from.  It's a first indication that maybe he's not nearly as bad as some here desperately want to believe.  It doesn't mean he's going to be breaking records or setting the league on fire.  It's just a positive first step.

Who's a Henne optimist? I don't think anyone's expecting Henne to do anything

there probably in general negative people whether they realize it or not. They are the kinda people that are incapable of objectivity.

Anyone who isn't declaring Henne to be a 3rd string QB at best is apparently a Henne optimist.  The reality is, those who are most positive about Henne are pretty realistic in their expectations.  Nobody is thinking he's going to suddenly become Peyton Manning.

There's a lot of that around here.

it's sad.. They don't have to be negative.. It's all in their outlook of things.

In a perfect world Bortles is ready to start game 1, and goes out and shocks the world making everyone wonder why Houston passed on him at #1 for JaDaevon "Derrick Harvey" Clowney.  Robinson becomes the next Calvin Johnson.  Lee becomes the next Jerry Rice.  Blackmon sobers up, suits up, and Storm Johnson helps us relive fond memories of Fred Taylor.  Bowanko makes us glad we didn't pick up The Secret World of Alex Mack.  Chris Smith gives us the pass rusher we've always wanted.  And Gus Bradley builds a dynasty that makes everyone ask "Bill Beli-who?"

I think the best case scenario for the Jags is that Henne has some good games, minimizes his bad ones, and Bortles is ready either mid-season, or by 2015 to go.  And then Henne becomes a competent backup who can step in whenever we're up by 14+ in the late 4th.
People on this board have floated the idea 20 TDs and 3500 are realistic goals for Henne and he has never come close to either. He is a career bottom 25% QB. I don't expect him to finally become a solid QB in his third contract just because I want him to. 16 TDs would be a career best for him and that is just pedestrian. Swell guy. Maybe not third string, but he should be a backup based on ability.

his best was 3,301 and 15 TDs. I could see him hitting 20

TDs and 3,500 yards but again we are just picking at straws.

He's never come close?  He started 13 games last year and had 3,241 yards and 13 touchdowns.  Hitting the 3,500 yard mark shouldn't be a huge issue with 3 additional starts, and with an improved line, running game, and better receiving talent, it wouldn't be a huge reach to think he could hit what is really a relatively modest target for touchdowns.

I think you're doing your darndest to downplay Henne.  Not sure what the agenda here is.  Nobody thinks he's going to be a star in the league, but he can be a competent starter during this transition phase.

Im not banging on Henne at all. I just think its silly to think that any competition has ended this early.
I like optimism, but there's a point where it becomes unrealistic.  No one should be kidding themselves, the only reason Henne is starting is because Bortles is raw and will benefit from having a good base of training before he gets thrown to the wolves.  Henne is a backup QB and he's never going to amount to more than that.  Most realistic best-case scenario is that our offense around him performs very well and he is a decent game manager this year.
