well you're assuming about the opposite, what's the difference?

great minds....ya know

Except, I gave reasoning to support my stance.

All you had was some long chain of assumptions.

You're assuming Miami would have wanted Monroe, and would have been willing to pay a higher price than Baltimore did to get him.

No different than him assuming that if they don't make the deal with Baltimore that no deal at all is made.
Monroe was traded almost 5 months ago. Why is this even still being talked about?

No, I am suggesting that the Miami and Pittsburgh situations could easily have fostered more competition for Monroe's services. No more no less, but its a very reasonable and plausible stance.

What reasoning do you have for implying that "it was either Baltimore's 4th + 5th or nothing", given the variables I mentioned; i.e. the time left in the deadline combined with need from other teams?

Probably because Monroe has now been rated as a top 10 OLT for 3 years now, misses little to zero time to injury and is still young, and we wound up getting a return for him that seems inadequate.

As said yesterday, the only way this deal looks at least a little better from a Jags standpoint would be if Monroe signs somewhere else than Baltimore - because then the "4th + 5th" return for a "rental" seems more in line.

...in your opinion.

The fact is that whether or not the Ravens are able to sign Monroe this off season, they gave us a 4th and a 5th for a rental.

I didn't impy "it was either Baltimore's 4th + 5th or nothing". But it has as much credibility as your assumptions about Miami and Pittsburgh.

Linkify yo'self!

<p style="margin-left:40px;">"We mentioned yesterday that the Dolphins have interest in Chiefs free agent Branden Albert. But that's not the only left tackle on Miami's radar.

<p style="margin-left:40px;">The Dolphins also very much like Eugene Monroe and plan to pursue both Monroe (if he gets to free agency) and Albert, with the hope of landing one of them, according to sources briefed on the team’s thinking. The Dolphins like both, and would be happy to land either
..."

What can I say? Trust in my powers, for you know them to be true.

Oh yeah, and what was that a certain poster said about us not discussing other landing spots for Monroe? The same poster who engaged me in conversation directly from that quote.

Right.

Quote:Why in God's name did Ozzie do that trade? He gave up two picks just so he could rent Eugene Monroe and then have to go into contract negotiations with him.

It just seems like he got fleeced on that one.

I think Ozzie made the trade to protect his high-dollar QB with hopes of making another play-off push at the time... other than that Monroe is not a stop-gap player he could have got... Monroe, maybe, is not top level but he's good enough to get the job done...

I can see and understand why he wanted Monroe, I just don't understand why he paid what he paid.

maybe he thought he could lock him up on a reasonable deal before FA

That can be said about a lot of trades made in sports... thing about the Monroe trade is like I said before... he's not a stop-gap player...he's still fairly young and teams (GM's) thinks they can be a good fit in their system... Monroe is not in the top 5-8 LT's in the NFL but he's far from the bottom range too... while he played for the Jags he had games where he was dominate against really good DE's...he also had so-so games also... in the end the Ravens needed Monroe more than the Jags did because they have their franchise QB and they needed someone to protect his blind side so they might have, or did, over-pay for him... we will not know for sure until Monroe spends a full off season and season in their system...

You cannot understand why he paid what he paid?!?!

Yeah TMD, you know - getting anybody for 11 games and giving up a 4th and 5th is a high price.

Rhetorical question.

If they re-sign him then the 4th and the 5th for that caliber of player is peanuts.

If Monroe goes elsewhere (than re-signing in Balt), then yes, it looks somewhat foolish. But Deacon acts as if Ozzie giving up that compensation at the time was a "a lot" and it really wasn't - especially if he winds up re-signing.

He's trying hard....

not really.

it depends on how you look at it.  We got a 4th and 5th for a guy that was going to leave in 11 games anyway...

The Ravens took a risk by giving us a 4th and 5th for first dibs on signing a free agent that Monroe will be.  For them, if they somehow sign him, it's an OK deal.

For us it's a good deal regardless of where he ends up.  The end result is the same:  We have a 4th and 5th for a player that was leaving anyway.  Now if he plays for the Dolphins or the Ravens, it doesn't matter to us at all.
