Haven't read a lot on today's results, but from what I was hearing from 1010 during my car ride home, today was a very positive day for our oline. Like some of you have said, Gauging Little based off his results against Chaision comes with a little skepticism. For me, there is less optimism of him winning the battles than there would be concern if he was losing.

But it is still positive to hear, considering the doubt that came with picking him early after not taking a snap in a while. Hopefully the competition between him and cam gets the best out of both of them.

If nothing else, having brings a some depth to the position that makes me a little more confident if Cam goes down(or visa versa If Little winds up being the stater). Especially after our oline injury history over the past few seasons.

I haven't heard very much about Allen. He was someone I was disappointed in seeing drop off his sophomore year. Hopefully this regime can help him develop into that edge rusher everyone thought he was capable of being after his rookie year.

Can't wait until we get see this squad play. The anticipation all year has been killing me.

I read some stuff yesterday that said Allen has been whooping everybody on the OL. That hes completely dominated every guy he has gone against and that he looks primed to have a big year and be the elite pass rusher that he was in College.
It's going to be interesting to see if Allen will be playing standing up more often in this new scheme

He 100% will be, likely most of the time.

While I desperately want the OL to improve exponentially, this brought a smile to my face.

It does breed some optimism, but given his injury history, his long layoff, his status as a rookie, his status as the most important Jaguars rookie in this draft class aside from Trevor Lawrence, and the Jaguars past bad luck at LT and the draft as a whole, I am trying hard to not get too excited too soon.

I hate that I have gotten so jaded.

As for Allen, I think three things will help him rebound.

1.  Improved health.  Last year, he suffered a lot of injuries.

2.  The new scheme.  Perhaps rushing him from a 2 point stance as a 3-4 OLB will present more favorable matchups for him and enable him to better take on opposing Ts and TEs.

3.  More surrounding help.  his rookie year, he had guys like Calais Campbeoll and Yannick Ngakoue taking attention away from him, and he wound up with ten sacks as a rookie.  When they were traded away the next year, his productivity plummeted.  Even with better help and a new scheme, without other people to at least occasionally pose a threat to opposing QBs, O-Lines will shift a lot of attention to him, which may minimize his production/impact.

One day I read he's completely being held in check by everyone on the O-Line and the next day I'm reading he's unblockable. I'm very confused. I don't know what to believe. I've never seen such conflicting reports on one player.

Because I haven't been out to the practices and because the reporting has seemed scarce in terms of quantity, it's been a particularly frustrating training camp for me.

I am strongly considering going out to the scrimmage on Sunday, even with the apprehensions about my health.

These below are from yesterday, as I'm just now about to go through twitter/links from today's practice, but here's a little more on Allen, the Defense and some other nuggets in the links if you haven't seen them yet... Definitely worth the look.

Welcome Back Josh Allen

Defensive end/outside linebacker Josh Allen has teased his progress within this new defensive scheme under Joe Cullen. The former Pro Bowler was shoehorned into a position that didn’t fit his skill set last season, and for that matter during his rookie season as well. The latter was helped largely due to Calais Campbell drawing so much attention and double teams.

But under the change with Cullen, Allen has been allowed to return to the game that led to the Jags drafting him in the Top 10 in 2019. In one-on-one drills, Allen won every rep we watched him in, no matter the competition. He was successful against rookies, veterans, starters and third teamers. He has reemployed his swim move to get past linemen and it made him nearly impossible to defend on Tuesday.

In team drills, Allen got into the backfield twice, forcing throw-away passes with quarterback hurries. One of them would have likely been a sack had he been allowed to hit the quarterback.

Both Allen and Cullen have talked about the need for the third year end to be great this season; how much the defense will depend on him to step up his game. At least after the first day in pads, Allen looks to be back to his old self, with a physicality and finesse that makes him one of the best at the position.

https://www.si.com/nfl/jaguars/news/tren...ay-of-pads

Josh Allen can already see it; he’ll roam the line of scrimmage, dropping, then approaching. Disguising each move with another, watching the quarterback watch him.

“This dude does not know what I’m about to do, but I’m going to kill him regardless.”

It’s the luxury allowed to defensive ends—particularly guys like Josh Allen—in the scheme under new defensive coordinator Joe Cullen. After years of running an old Seattle-based scheme that was outdated in today’s NFL, the Jaguars are shifting to more of a 3-4/4-3 scheme that in and of itself allows for a more multiple defense.

“We will be multiple in our scheme where we can have four-man fronts and then basically we can have three-man fronts, five men fronts with five down," explained Cullen last week.

Moreso, within this scheme, players like Josh Allen also have the freedom to move around at will, lining themselves up mere seconds before the snap, dependent on where they believe the play will take place. It’s the defense most commonly used in college now, as it combats the spread offense. So it’s a defense—and a mindset—with which Josh Allen feels extremely comfortable.

“I’m back to where I can just move around, I can disguise, and I can get back to the swag. I feel like defense is all about swagger. I feel like when you are moving around and you are standing, [the defense] doesn’t know what that person is going to do, that’s always a good [thing].”

That is really encouraging.

If you look at when this defense peaked in 2017, the rotation and depth of talent at nearly every level was one of the key elements. The Dline had Campbell, Jackson, Yannick, and Darius with Fowler, and a few other interior guys iirc, coming off the bench(None of which are on our current roster). At LB we had Smith, Poz, and Jack(only one left on the current roster). CB's had Ramsey, Bouye, and Colvin(none of which on our current roster).

That is obviously a lot of talent, but those guys benefited from not being forced to play out of position and being able to rotate as needed. Bouye and Yannick are the perfect examples. When Ramsey is taking the #1 on almost every snap, a half competent DB should look like a pro bowler.

Had Allen been on that roster he would have been an absolute monster. The only thing that could have held him back would have been playing time.

When we drafted him, his ability to drop into coverage was one of his big features. I'm pumped to see what he can do when he is played in the proper position to highlight his skill set.
So, I don’t know if anyone has said this yet but over the last couple of months, Ben Ellefson’s name keeps popping up. Singled out as someone who’s body changed during the off-season, good practices, and improvement.

If it wasn't for his ACL injury at Syracuse, he would have been drafted in the late first to early second round.

So glad he fell to where we snagged him because he's a true ballhawk safety.

Lets hope Baalke's high risk/high reward draft philosophy pays off throughout this regular season and beyond.

No, I'm talking about Chaisson. It's not just been reports on this site, but several others. I've been checking everyday on different websites, trying to get as much information when it comes to the Jags and some articles say Chaisson is dominating the O-Line and others say he is getting no penetration on any of the OT's. I've never seen such differing accounts. I guess we're gonna have to wait for the preseason to see what really is happening.
You have to say, the Little and Cisco picks could both be genius. Both players looking superb so far. There was a lot of criticism on draft night, but looks so far like both will be starters this season

There was a lot of criticism over Etienne and Campbell, but I seem to remember almost everyone liking the Little pick and I don't remember anyone hating on the Cisco pick.

I agree with this.

I think Etienne and Campbell were the two least popular picks in our draft.

For the record, I was in favor of his selection at the time.  As I indicated earlier, Campbell was never on my radar.  I didn't like or hate the pick at the time.  Seemed like a good player...but my thoughts were mostly on the OL by that point.  As for Georgia players, I was focused more on Ojulari.
Lageman, on radio with Shadrick, has gotten to watch the tapes of the padded practices. On the lines, he mentioned both Little and Hamilton as standouts. Although listed at 320 on the online roster, Lageman believes Hamilton to easy be at 350 or more. I think we have our NT.
