Teams trade because it guarantees they get the player they want... especially when we're only talking a late round pick.  The Steelers may know we are going to cut one, but what keeps Tampa from claiming them off the waiver wire?  A late round trade does the trick.

The real problem is that kickers are really a dime a dozen.  You aren't going to find a kicker like Scobee on waivers most times, but you can find an accurate guy that can get it in from 45 yards pretty consistently.  The question is really is it worth it to lose a late round pick for that extra leg.  For Scobee, I'd take the risk.  He's got a proven track record, for the most part, especially when the game is on the line.  For Myers, I'd pass.  There's not any evidence he can perform under pressure.

If I had to choose, I'd stick with Scobee.  However, if you're gonna go with someone new, this year is a great one to do it. We are expected to have a bad record, and the young guy can work on his nerves.
Quote:I don't see us getting a great deal back for a kicker, even a kicker like Scobee. I'd rather have Scobee until he show significant sign of decline and then go find the next guy, even if we miss out on Myers. Kickers like Scobee are a rare breed, as we found out when we lost Mike Hollis.
Man, when I came back from living 2 years in Germany and Hollis (and Mark Brunell & Tom Coughlin for that matter) was gone I couldn't believe it. I got to talk to him once and I asked him why the heck he went to New York. He said he thought it would be a good place to grow but the grass was not greener on the other side. He didn't straight up say it but I could tell by the way he was talking he wished he'd stayed in Jacksonville.
What exactly has this Myers guy done that is so wonderful? I'm not seeing the point in keeping him, and I don't see any trade value for a kicker.

I'm suprised that so many people apparently struggle with this concept.
Oh boy a 7th round pick. I'm overwhelmed with joy.
Considering how Caldwell has done in the later rounds, I'd be ok with trading him. Maybe we get a steal or use the pick for trade ammo. They're close, Scobee has proven to be clutch but he's not getting younger. Not sure how Caldwell feels regarding kicker salaries

Isn't that better than getting diddly squat?

I assume you're never overwhelmed with joy
Quote:No one trades for kickers. I'm sure Caldwell would love it, but it's a complete fantasy.

lets hope for every few caldwells, bilichek's, there is one Gene Smith. So lets keep our fingers crossed.

Demetrius McCray was a 7th round pick, he's turning out alright. Still got a chance at picking up a good player in those late rounds.
I think Myers is more likely to be traded. He's subject to waivers, and he's dirt cheap as an undrafted first-year player. If a team late in the order really likes Myers, the only way to guarantee his addition is to cough up a seven.

Scobee, on the other hand, is more expensive (even at vet minimum), and is not subject to waivers. The Steelers, for example, could just call him 30 seconds after he's released and write him a check.

I still think the team is more likely to part with Myers. Scobee has at least several good years left, and there's a level of confidence in him--especially with the improved blocking--that you don't have with Myers.

If Myers does clear waivers, this might be one of those rare situations where a team keeps a developmental kicker on the practice squad. If Scobee does struggle this season, the Jags could potentially have a much more pro-seasoned Myers ready to be the front-runner in camp next year.

Both are good players. Myers is young and has stronger leg. Scobee is proven and how Myers performs under pressure will be the determined factor. Only Gus and/or David Caldwell can have that kind of evaluation.

More than one team are in need of a good kicker right now. They will compete and the Jags would have a good chance to get a trade for.

I agree both Myers and Scobee will be playing in the NFL this season.

Now... how to work this where the Jags profit.

Someone mentioned Hollis - I think Myers has Hollis written all over him, but I can't see anyone taking Scobee and his contract, so if we are able to salvage a deal with another team, it will be for Myers.

man i bet we could get some seriously good players for him in madden

Yep.

They aren't holding both for nothing.

Successful or not, looks like they're going to try something.

You can't trade kickers in Madden Wink
Any chance we can get Von Miller or Justin Houston?

This pretty much sums it up !!

There's nothing wrong with Scobee, but he's not getting any younger. I'm confident enough with what I've seen with Meyers to take a chance on him going forward if we can get a trade for Scobee. And I'm equally confident that Scobee will be fine for a couple more years if we can get a trade for Meyers. I applaud the effort to try and trade one of them, and I'd tell teams, "take your pick."

He's 33. Any other position, I'd agree with you, but 33 is in a specialist's prime. If Scobee was 36, 37 or older and coming off multiple down years, I'd agree entirely with the "keep Myers" crowd, but he's not. He's coming off of one bad year in which his blocking was only marginally more effective than five stop signs placed on the field in front of him, and several outstanding years before that. A steady, cool-footed kicker could win a couple of games for the Jaguars this year, maybe even be more important than that. I mean, does everyone remember how difficult it was to find a successor to Mike Hollis? Scobee is better than Hollis ever was, imo, and to give up on an excellent, proven kicker in his prime to gamble on a rookie with a big leg (cough--Hayden Epstein--cough) seems foolish at this point in the team's development. If we were going to break in a rookie kicker who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn in college, we should have done in in 2013.
