Of course you would. You'd bench Manning too. It's a wonder teams aren't beating down your door to be their GM.
Quote:The way Peyton has played lately the Broncos might be better off with Brock Osweiler. Indeed many teams are screwed if their starter goes down, but that's no reason for the Jaguars to be one of them. Some teams do have the depth to muster such a loss.
If you think there is a backup QB out there that will be able to carry this young still developing team on his back should Blake go down then you are completely delusional.

It's going to take everything a healthy Blake Bortles has just to get this team to .500 this year.

I suspect you'd take Ryan Leaf over Henne if given the chance. At least Leaf has a big arm and doesn't check down all the time, right?
I think by far the most important value Chad Henne provides the Jaguars is he can provide Blake Bortles input based on his much longer experience being in the NFL, as well as provide Bortles with a sounding board. Also, Henne can provide another set of eyes for the coaches and he can provide them input in game planning. Henne's intangibles far outweigh what he provides on the field. Based on where the Jaguars are in their building efforts, Henne seems too valuable for the Jaguars to move on from this season.

Thank you for the common sense

In Green Bay, Brett Hundley looks like the heir apparent to Rodgers.

The Panthers have a backup to Cam in Derek Anderson that could start for many teams.

The Chiefs have a darn good backup in Chase Daniels who features a beautiful deep pass.

The Bills have a fine backup whether it's EJ or Cassel.

The Raiders have a solid backup much better than Henne with Christian Ponder.

There are more, but this was just off the top of my head.

Christian Ponder? Seriously, just stop. And the Packers backup is Tolzein, who stinks.

The Dolphins cut Josh Freeman. Would you sign him to replace Henne?

The Cowboys have a questionable running game without Murray, and their main backup is Brandon Weeden. I don't see them only winning a few games with their backup, but in all likelihood they would be sub .500 unless one of their running backs steps up. But I'd predict something like a 6-10 record for them.

The Saints were 7-9 last season with a healthy Drew Brees carrying a team with a poor defense. Take Drew Brees away from that team last year and they would have won a couple of games tops. They are in the same situation this year. Their defense is still poor and none of their backup QBs would be able to carry them. If Brees gets hurt, they'll be a contender for a top five pick.

The Steelers could do fairly well if they retain Michael Vick, because a healthy Michael Vick can still be an effective quarterback in this league. Antonio Brown is one of the best WRs in the league, and they have other capable receivers. Add Le'Veon Bell into the equation and they have a RB that can carry a heavy workload. All that's left is their defense doing a job. I think they could challenge for a better than .500 record, though that probably wouldn't be enough to get them a wild card spot or win the AFC North.

The Broncos could survive with Osweiler under center. He would have a decent O-Line protecting him, a capable running back in CJ Anderson, and a good group of receivers to throw to. Their defense also seems to be coming along nicely. So I think they are another team that could hit .500 or better, but like the Steelers that probably wouldn't be enough to win their division or land a wild card spot.

Now it is worth saying that none of these teams will win a Super Bowl if their star quarterback gets hurt, though the same can be said about any team. But the Steelers and Broncos could still contend for .500 or better record [and considering how Peyton has played in preseason they might even be better off with their backup!], the Cowboys would probably put together half a dozen wins, and the Saints would likely struggle mightily. So yes they would be screwed, but two of them could arguably withstand losing their star quarterback and still have a fair season.

Too bad that Aaron Rodgers guy tanked, huh?

But, Chad Henne! You can't say anything positive about Chad Henne!

/sarcasm

The points you make will fly right over the head of many in this discussion because common sense is something to be avoided. The coaching staff and front office love having Henne there because he's almost like another coach for Bortles to work with, only he's a guy who has extensive experience playing the position, so his insight actually has more gravitas.

If your backup QB is called into action, the last thing you want out there is a gun slinger. You want a guy who is going to be focused on limiting mistakes and avoiding costly gaffes. Henne will make the plays that are necessary. His limitations mean the entire offense has to play at a higher level. If that happens, he's able to effectively move the team. The problem he's had, especially since coming to Jacksonville, is that he hasn't had the weapons around him. Last year was probably the worst case scenario for any QB. They were dealing with a roster full of rookies, no running game, and a line that couldn't block a pack of girl scouts. He took a beating out there, and somehow that beating was all his fault. Pointing out the deficiencies he was forced to deal with on the field are simply dismissed as excuses by the same folks who think EJ Emanuel would be a good fit to be a backup here.

Wow.
Mark Sanchez, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Garappolo, Mettenberger, Kirk Cousins, Derek Anderson, Tarvaris Jackson, Hasselbeck, Drew Stanton, Ryan Mallet, Ryan Nassib, and Brock the Lobster are all better. Colt McCoy too.

Its okay though, you're all in denial and its sad to see. You don't have to lie to yourselves. If any of you tell me one of these backups are worse than Henne, then you're lying. Straight up.

I expect the Packers to cut Tolzien... and actually he's even better than Henne

As for Josh Freeman, he'd be a bit risky. However, Freeman's best year came when Olson was coaching him.

I'd like to openly complain about my post being deleted. I'm allowed to poke fun at anyone else who makes a silly mistake like saying "Favre" instead of "Rodgers" around here, and anyone else is allowed to do it to me, but if I just so happen to point out that a mod with the ability to conceal that he edited his post is the subject of the joke, it gets deleted?

Henne has had the extremely beneficial privilege of working behind the same line as Gabbert. He is as mediocre as it can get but his tenure has been damaged by the talent in front of him. We're better off with him as a backup than anybody else's backup.

Like I said, just pull names out of a hat.

Based on your ignorance of the NFL, it's pretty safe to say you haven't watched most of these guys play.

What names do you want me to say? I'm only naming players that are in the NFL. Do you want me to magically come up with high-school backup players? Seeing your post on this message board, its pretty clear you have no idea what you're seeing when watching. You just stare at the screen while drooling and wait for a touchdown.

Oh, and come on now, tell me which one of these guys are worse than Henne. You probably don't even know who these players are.

Based on what?

It most certainly isn't based on anything he has ever done on the football field.

Tolzien has looked pretty darn good this preseason... much better than Henne.

Even more proof you don't watch football. He's been pretty decent this pre-season.
