Quote:So every guy has to be  a star player in college to succeed in the pro's? Not saying he will or won't but what he did in college has little to do with his pro career.
How someone has played over the past 3-4 years at the collegiate level does in fact have a predictive value.  You will find that the majority of players that succeed in the NFL were very good on the collegiate level.  There are some that were mediocre in college but went on to excel.....but these are the outliers. The scouts and GMs would disagree that how they played in college has little to do with a player's pro career prospect.
Neither TJ, nor Grant have proven themselves. The premise is, IF they do...

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all be really, really, really fat.
Wink
We all want Yeldon to be the guy. I'm not sleeping on a healthy Gerhart (I saw flashes late last year) and Denar, behind a competent offensive line. Count in the threat of pass too, limited safeties in the box spell out a successful running game by committee this year.

While Cory Grant shows electrify speed, he doesn't have the pass protection, knowledge of the offense, or ball security that the backs in front of him possess. He's a special teams guy who if he loses the rock a couple times is done.
I think our cuts are actually going to be tough and will shock some people. It's not a bad problem to have, it shows that our roster is improving and letting guys go that have shown something says a thing or two about who we have. Where one injury may have doomed us in the past it doesn't feel quite so horrifying now.

The Unofficial depth chart to start the first preseason game has Corey Grant as listed as 4th Punt Returner

(WR Tandon Doss the starter, Greene, and NIck Marshall all ahead of him).

T.J. Yeldon is a co-starter with Denard Robinson and Corey Grant is last place as a running back for the team so if he gets a chance to play in this game he'll have to do something really impressive to get a shot in next week's game.

Grant's claim to fame is probably on KRs where he's listed 2nd behind DRob and has more room to see the field and run. He may have already beaten DRob out with his scrimmage performance.

Pierce or Grant. Grant can play special teams. I am not sure about Pierce. Can one be a gunner? If we keep 5 RB then we will only keep 4 TE. PRE-Season is very important for these 2 guys. Storm Johnson I have never seen him in any special teams except maybe KO last year?

Bradley acted like he is keeping 6 receivers.

Fun starts Friday!

Has any team ever kept five tight ends? You'd almost need a 3 TE base set to justify that.

Storm was a decent KR option.
I would dump Gerhart in favor of keeping Grant. Grant might not have enough wiggle, but Toby doesn't have the speed or vision to get more than 2 yards per carry. Grant also serves as a potential kick returner.

Gerhart will be much improved now that he is healthy.  Anybody who saw that play against the Eagles last season knew how big of hit he took.  Toughing it out for the most of the season and getting better by the end, I think is enough reason to expect better things from Toby.  He's not the prolific back he was in college but he can still play NFL ball.  The jury is out on Grant because if it isn't, he would have been drafted and competing for a Sproles type role in any other of the 31 NFL teams.

What has DRob ever done as a KR to suggest he's earned the role?

I hope we get to see Corey Grant take a couple hand offs this Thursday against the Steelers!

To be the KR you will have to actually earn a roster spot and the chances of a rookie player making a 53 man roster based solely on KR ability is pretty much slim to none.

That alone gives DRob the advantage over Grant.
It could be that they see Robinson as Toddman's replacement in returns while remaining a backup running back, and going into the first preseason game with the way he finished last season he should get the respect of being at least the first on the depth chart at KR/PR but I think Corey Grant is going to surprise a lot of people if given the chance... then again maybe HC Gus Bradley wants to try to keep him a guarded secret going into the regular season.

I don't see it that way at all. You want the best player at every position, and that includes PR and KR. If you have a guy like Grant proving he's the best KR, then you keep him. That said, Grant's speed allows the team to use him at various positions including special plays on offense and possibly at gunner.

Everything you don't get to see at camp apparently -  because Caldwell and Bradley have both referred to him as "the" kick returner since June.

They have confidence in him. There was also an article about it on the home page a few weeks ago citing how much progress he's made learning more about the his role(s) in the NFL and the healing of the nerve damage in his elbow and hand.

He clearly has the athleticism to be a good returner - but he was completely lacking in experience there until now.
